  1. I have a couple questions. * Is it possible to use reflective thread on the patch? Patches that reflect are hard for me to find. * What is the effect of wearing a large patch? Is it something I need to be aware of vis-a-vis the CoC? Dave
  2. You fellahs are NOT inspiring confidence! Dave
  3. OK, a plurality has said that 6:15+ is good. So, it's then! I must admit, that it feels fun and naughty to get bike work done on a week night. Dave
  4. I've wanted jack stands for a while, so I'll go ahead and get them while I have a reason to. I don't have a rod to stretch between the stands, but I hope the axle will work. I'll have both mufflers off. Dave
  5. Sorry, I missed you as I was composing. I'll send you the info too! I get out of work at 5:30, and am usually home by 6:00-ish. Assuming the tire arrives, 6:15+ is great. Dave
  6. I have a Carbon_One adapter with legs. I'll have it on the stand with legs, and if we have to lift higher, we can. I'll have the saddle bags off, and the right muffler. Do we need the left muffler off as well? I don't have jack stands, but I can get some. These OK? What else? What size axle wrench... or if someone can bring one, I'll buy it for the next time. I have a compressor, but it's a smaller pancake compressor. Will it do? Tire valve tool? Most importantly, is pizza OK? Dave PS - I'm sending address details to Ponch, Kbay, and Squidley. If anyone else wants that info, just ask.
  7. You guys are awesomesauce! I really appreciate it, so much. Chuckles is so right. I live in Sugar Land... not sure where y'all live. If you want to decide and send me an address / GPS coords, I'll be there Thursday evening... assuming Mr. UPS delivers on time. I'll reply here when tracking says it arrived so we'll all know. I can also host, if you want, but I don't have an axle wrench or tire-changing supplies. I am willing to get both if you tell me what to get. I have a Harbor Freight 10 minutes away. The advantage of hosting is that I don't have to carry the tire, and I can also feed you. (The wife says the advantage is that it will force me to clean the garage) But I know there might be special equipment y'all might have (tire changer?). What supplies do you want me to bring / have? Grease for the splines? I've been keeping my decent old tires for the day when I could offer roadside assistance. I assume the one I am I changing out will do in a pinch. I also have a reasonable Avon front and a reasonable Avon rear. I'm planning on riding over, but if you guys want one of those I can bring it. If you aren't keeping spares, I'll take my tire with me. Appreciatively, Dave
  8. I ended up getting a Dunlop Elite 3 from Dennis Kirk. Hard to beat with the free shipping. I very much appreciate the offers. Honestly, I would prefer to do it at a house if possible. The last time I know my splines were greased was 20K ago up at V7Goose's. Is it the sort of thing we can do in an evening? LOL, I suppose so, since a dealer can do it in an hour. I've seen the take-off procedure twice, but I'm not entirely comfortable with it. This last time was at that shop in Mena, and there was too much hammering for my liking. I'd like to see it done proper. My tire is being delivered Thursday. I'd like to do the Honor Ride Saturday, but I could be back by mid-afternoon. Sunday I need to run up to College Station on a matter, and that's pretty firm. So if I need to skip Saturday, I will, or any evening. Name your time, and I'm grateful. Dave
  9. I realized today that I didn't want to ride to Big Bend on the cheapy emergency tire I got on my last trip. Doh! I ordered a tire that should arrive Thursday. What are my mounting options? I want to do the Texas Honor Ride this Saturday. Are there any weeknight options that can get it done between now and this next Thursday, when we leave for Tom's and Big Bend? Maybe I should buy the Harbor Freight setup and do it myself? Can I take it to an auto tire shop and have them do it? Or do I miss the THR so I can have a motorcycle place do it Saturday? Dave
  10. Likewise. It's as if the set speed is a few mph low, so I have been hitting the Acc button until I feel the throttle take charge. Dave
  11. I saw that very bottle holder, and told the guy it wouldn't fit my bike. Great job on the engineering! Dave
  12. James, Owen, Perry, I had a great time yesterday. Sorry we got separated, but I hope you had a great time without us. Dave
  13. Thanks. I was through there last week, but couldn't quite remember. See you soon. Dave
  14. I find seat discussions fascinating. I'm thinking it must be the most personal motorcycle setup decision ever, more so than even handlebar setup. If you asked me what seat to buy, I would say the stock seat with the Rick Butler mod. I have gone 1000 miles in a day with it. I've gone 150 miles between stops many many times. My wife goes 100 miles before squirming on it, although she does appreciate the sheepskin on longer trips. And yet the stock seat with the Butler mod is an abject failure for you. From this, I conclude that there won't be much sense in my asking other people for ideas on seats. Their butt is different than mine. I feel blessed that the stock seat and handlebars work so well for me. Dave
  15. Blowing off steam.... On my recent group ride to Arkansas, I started popping fuses on my passing lamps. I'd just rewired them recently to use a relay and direct connection to the battery, so I reckoned that's where the trouble lay. Then, on the last day, I lost my Gremlin Bell. Those suckers were determined to cause mischief! Last weekend, I tore apart the headlamp housing and looked at the relay set up. I also took apart the left passing lamp housing to look at the switch--that had shorted out before. Nothing seemed wrong, and when I put it back together, the lamps worked. Maybe a crimp? Today I looked and sure enough the passing lamps were off. The Gremlins were back. I tore everything apart that I had touched during the install and looked for smoky residue. I put in fuse after fuse, letting it pop while I looked for sparks. Nothing! Finally, I took apart the right passing lamp housing, and the wire was stuck to the back of the lamp bulb. Burned. That's where the short was, in something I'd never touched and had never been apart. Ugh! It was frusty, but still a nice way to spend an afternoon off. Dave
  16. Great news both! See you tomorrow! Dave
  17. Google Earth and MapSource both say Hooters is just south of Nasa Rd 1? I've been to the rally the last few years. It sure didn't seem light last year. People were spending like crazy too, "to rebuild their economy". I did my part. It won't be very busy on The Strand until noon. Then it just keeps getting louder and busier and busier. We've cut out around 6PM whenever we've gone. I might take the shuttle to the Seawall, because I've never been to that end. Dave
  18. How about departing the Hooters at 8:30 then? I received "significant comments" from my navigator about leaving the house at 7AM to go to the rally. There was some questioning of my sanity. Last year we rode down and found free parking on the eastern end of the Strand. Then we walked a few blocks to the Original Mexican Cafe for breakfast. By the time we got done with breakfast, all the parking lots near where we parked were full. Does that sound like a reasonable plan? Dave
  19. Note, Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) has been released. Here's a story on Slashdot.
  20. I put a watch on eBay and eventually won passing lamps (halogen) plus brackets for $225. I don't recall the installation cost, but I reckon the stealership charged almost as much for that to do it by the book, instead of right. Watch eBay, then install it right yourself. Dave
  21. It would be better if they were open!
  22. I'm fine whenever. Is 8AM at Hooters too early? Dave
  23. I am using Ubuntu on 5 computers here. I am not sure if MEPIS has a LiveCD, but that LiveCD allows you to try Ubuntu on your own computer without installing anything. Dave
  24. Hey, I don't blame you a bit. The Wings Over Houston airshow is first rate! I do airport work and my company sponsors the show in Fort Worth, so I have seen plenty and I am taking a break for a while. Take your ear plugs and make sure you catch the Harrier. The one act I wish I could catch is the A-10... I've never seen it. That and the P-38. And the C-17. Maybe I should go! Dave
  25. Welcome to Texas, and Houston. If we can help in any way....? JBurrell mentioned that there is a big rally this weekend in Galveston. Just a couple hundred thousand of our closest friends. If you can make it, drop me or he a PM and we'll figure out how to meet you. Again, welcome! Dave
