  1. Do a search for Road King, lots of help here. In short, you need a clamp at the front of the muffler, and a bracket (or hanger) for the rear. The mufflers themselves don't need modification, but there are different flavors--some with catalytic converters--so make sure you get the right ones. "Road king catalytic" might be a good search. Dave
  2. Another dealership in your area? I got mine for $0.00 from the dealer. Dave
  3. When they are seated well, I don't feel them for 4-5 hours. But, eventually my ear canals get irritated... they are foreign objects. Then I switch to the soft foam ones for a gas tank, and can put them back in at the next stop. But they need to be all the way in or else the stems can touch the helmet ear pads. I moisten them and pull my ears out to enlarge the canal, and they slide in all the way. Dave
  4. You are quite welcome. I very much like them. They muffle very loud sounds, including pipes and wind at speed. But, they can let me hear spoken words too. I don't take them out for short stops like refueling. The "baby blues" work just right for my wife's smaller ear canals. Dave
  5. I changed because I was tired of having to be the first bike in the group to start. Otherwise, I couldn't hear it over my friends' bikes. I just wanted a wee bit more sound, so I went with stock Road Kings. Plus, they were free. They didn't help the bike's performance, but they helped mine. I really didn't get how much more power I had at high RPMs until I could hear the bike roar like an F-1 race car. Now I drive it much better... not like a V-Twin but how it was intended. I am tempted to swap back to stealth mode, because I do like driving through coast plains and not frightening the birds off before I can see them. @RossKean - I wear ear plugs on any sort of trip. I did with the stock pipes to increase endurance, and I'd recommend good plugs on any long trip. I like these: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-White/dp/B0015WNZBI/ref=pd_cp_e_1]Etymotic Research ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs[/ame] Dave
  6. Cyclegear is also having a Cyber Monday sale. 62% OFF DUNLOP Cruiser 401, 402 and 404 Tire Deal From $51.99 Reg. From $132.99
  7. Yes, you need a bracket. The RK mufflers are mounted by two bolts further aft than the RSTD/Venture bolt. You can easily see all three bolts in the photo. The RK bolts are on top of the muffler near the end, and the RSTD bolt is forward and inside. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3542/3374798620_89c59a8034.jpg
  8. I tried it, and it works for me. I clicked the "insert image" icon above the signature edit box, and pasted your url from your sig: http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_metric/language/www/US/FL/West_Palm_Beach.gif That enclosed the url in IMG tags, like {IMG} and {/IMG} but using ][ instead... [ IMG]http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_metric/language/www/US/FL/West_Palm_Beach.gif[ /IMG] This is the IMG, not SIGIMG, but it put it in the signature. Note that I inserted a space in the code above in the IMG and /IMG; otherwise it insisted on showing the weather icon. Hope this helps. http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_metric/language/www/US/FL/West_Palm_Beach.gif
  9. Do I recall you made your own bracket for the exhaust? $50 total is a great put-on price! Have you ridden with the shield yet? How well does it work for you? It all looks great! Dave
  10. Hi Kerry! Glad to see you come aboard! Hopefully I can ride with you many more miles in the future. Dave
  11. I think when the time comes, I'll install a Powerlet rather than a cigarette plug. They're designed for applications like motorcycles. I'm not ready yet, but it's fun to imagine the uses by browsing the products. The problem is that Powerlet is expensive. Dreaming, however, is not. Dave
  12. I did! I just carried a cheap-o plastic jug of gasoline for 1200 miles in my saddle bag. I fear that more than a propane tank built for the purpose wrapped in swaddling clothes. Do you reckon that is about as heavy a load as you are likely to carry? Or do you carry around Oxford Dictionaries when you travel? Dave
  13. Update: I am still in the camp of "Motorkote did nothing" for me, except increase my awareness of the whine. It seems louder now than ever, to the point where I feel I must wear earplugs. Otherwise, I just notice it too much. Either that, or the whine has increased. I prefer to blame myself rather than my bike. Dave
  14. That works really well for me to judge the size. Thanks! Dave
  15. I bought Roxie at the end of July 08, when she had 2002 miles on her. 2000 miles in two years? On my ride back from the Texas meet up in Big Bend, we shared our 30,000 mile anniversary. I got to thinking this morning about where I've been with her. Here's our over-night trips in 2009: We went to Canyon Lake for Valentine's Day. We went on a Texas cafe tour to Austin and around We went to the Grand Canyon We went to Dallas for some carb work We went on an Iron Butt ride to Denver We took a trip to Arkansas We went to Big Bend National Park Dave
  16. It really was great. I think members here ought to think hard about doing something similar. If everyone pitches in just a little to organize a trip in your area, you can have a tremendous time. Since no one else seems willing to post photos, I will. I took just a few. These are some of the memorable moments for me. Dave
  17. How interesting! My HF lift drops like a stone! As soon as I push down, it drops fast... no throttling at all. I didn't know about this push it all the way in business. Maybe I'll try it with some weights. My son thoughtfully left behind his 500 pounds in lead fly weights. I'd rather drop those than the bike. Dave
  18. I'll go out on a limb and say that the brackets are the same size. They are just like the ones I bought, and they overlay perfectly on top of each other. With that in mind, I will propose that any size difference is an optical illusion. Closer objects appear larger. Dave
  19. According to [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=273218&postcount=2]this post[/ame]: Here are the P/N's (part numbers) you are looking for.... They will end with the following numbers if they are non-catalyst mufferls off a touring HD. 95 95a 98 or 98a Make sure you check the P/N's on BOTH mufflers The number in the listing (65591-06 65592-06) doesn't look like ones I've seen. Not that I've seen many, mind you. Dave
  20. I got mine for $0 by asking a dealer for take-offs. They have a guy come every few months to recycle the pile they generate, and they were happy to give me a set. I got brackets for $40 off this site and clamps for $30 (?). If these videos link, here are my stock pipes and my undrilled Road Kings. They are not much louder than stock, but are a bit. I like how they sound under load (read: accelerating fast)... kinda like an F1 race car. At cruise and idle, they are similar. One unexpected benefit to me is that I learned to love the higher revs because I can hear them. 21. Does it also hook to the horn? Can you set off the alarm remotely, in case you, um, misplace your bike? Dave
  22. Lots of lessons learned, for sure! The biggest lesson was in the depth of generosity of the good people here. I see you too didn't post the "what happens in Vegas" photos. I kinda wish there weren't so many of me standing around with my hands in my pocket. The least I could do is hold your drinks! Dave
  23. Let me tell you, VentureRiders are amazing. Due to poor planning on my part and an appalling lack of guy "stuff", it took way longer than expected to change my tire. But these guys stuck with it, applying ingenuity that Thomas Edison would have appreciated and that OSHA would have fined. Thank you SO MUCH Owen, Kbay, Ponch and Squidley for the help! I really fretted over getting this done with my scheduling problems, and thanks to you I can make the honor ride tomorrow... especially important to me following yesterday's massacre. Squidley and Lonna, it was a pleasure to meet you! I hope you learn to love Texas as much as we other transplants. See you again soon. I fear that most of my photos are the "stay in Vegas" sort. Below are the few remainders! LOL Thanks again, Dave
  24. Thanks Squidley for encouraging me to call! It turns out the exception is that the package must be re-weighed. I guess they don't believe the 21.8 pounds? What a strange status for something like that. Anyways, the nice lady said the package is still scheduled for delivery by 7PM. So we're good! You'll still get fed! (Even if UPS doesn't come through) Dave
  25. I surely hate to see these words: Your package has experienced an exception. The really crazy thing is that the tire arrived in Houston yesterday morning. Last night it left to travel across town to Stafford, where UPS has a distribution facility. Somehow between then and this morning, an exception occurred. "FORWARDED TO THE FACILITY IN THE DESTINATION CITY" is all I know. It sounds like it might have been sent to the wrong city? I don't know that the tire will arrive today. I live about three miles from the distribution center, so it seems possible that if they get it to Stafford, they could deliver it. I just don't know. Any of you have experience with this sort of exception? I suppose the prudent thing to do is to reschedule the tire party? I'm sending those attending the tracking link so they can see what is going on. Dave
