  1. The printed version also has a coupon for $40 off the heavy yellow lift, bringing it to $59 (if I recall correctly). This page shows it on sale for $69, but that's without the coupon. Dave
  2. Here's a PDF from the manual.
  3. I ride with a nice meetup group called the Road Kings that accepted me when I rode my Suzuki 750 Intruder and were happy for me when I upgraded to the RSTD. Yes, out of the 10 regulars, 7 ride Road Kings. They frequently "trouble share" about their maintenance costs. We all are understanding, because that's how friends are. Just about every time we get together, someone has some new safety chrome to point out. That's when I feel some envy. There is no lack of accessories for HDs. My buddy got Jack Daniels Ol' No 9 covers for either side of his engine (not sure what they cover). I'd just like to find blank covers for mine, and can't find them for both sides. For a 10+ year old unchanging design, you'd think there'd be plenty of accessories for the Royal Star touring bikes, but there really isn't. I don't feel much envy when they talk about their $100 oil changes and $250 tire changes. I sorta feel sad, because I think these distance-based costs keep them from riding more. Their cost-per-mile is really high, and I know of a couple buddies who skipped our trip last fall because their bikes were due for maintenance and they couldn't afford the cost. That and on the actual trip, we repeatedly pulled into gas stations only to leave empty because the station didn't carry Mega Premium grade. Aside: I like the biker pirate description. +1 for that! Dave
  4. I've lollygagged about getting these taillights. I'll do it soon. Meanwhile, I think you should look at the switch on the lamp housing first. Mine shorted all the time there until I did something (can't remember what-soldered the wire better?). It's not like I used the switch, but that's where the short was. Dave
  5. Guys, the reason you will drop the bike is that you are going too slowly. You will stop and the bike will fall over. I dropped my RSTD, 6-7 times? I had guards that I bought, but it was just plastic tubing. With all those drops, it was barely scuffed. Maybe I am Hercules, but when my bike starts going down while stopped, I put my foot down and it doesn't lay on it's side. The hardest thing in this technique is learning the friction zone so that you keep momentum. What I am saying is that you don't need to fear a drop while practicing this. It's not like skidding on gravel, it is like coming to a stop light and forgetting to put your foot down. Well, that's my experience. Yours may vary. Dave
  6. PkTexas and I took the RLAP course here in Houston. The only problem he had on his RSV is that he had handlebar risers on, and they hit the chrome tank cover and limited the ability to lock the bars. When they removed the chrome, he did all the maneuvers easily. Worried about dropping the bike? Split some garden hose and put it over your crash bars. Now there is nothing stopping you. BTW, the instructor did the maneuvers with me riding pillion. Want to talk about top heavy now? Dave
  7. Is it difficult to install them? Dave
  8. I'm gonna hit the Thanks button for this one. Dave
  9. Great news about the dealer! Your experience is exactly why I rewired my passing lamps. They shorted too often (until I tracked down the reason months later), popping fuses and leaving me without any lights. On an RSTD, it's a simple matter to install a relay and dedicated wire/fuse to the passing lamps, and something you might consider. Dave
  10. Money sent for mine! Dave
  11. Update: I got the headset right after lunch. Charging it up now, so I can surprise my sweetie after work. Dave
  12. Tejas Motorsports, a local Yamaha dealer, just called me and offered me $1000 for my '06 RSTD. They said they were experiencing great demand for used bikes, and wanted mine. I think what they were saying is that they were offering $1000 over the bluebook or trade-in value. I wasn't selling, so I didn't seek much clarification. When I said no thank you, I was offered a free fuel treatment on my next service. Thanks but.... The last question was whether I would be buying a new bike in the next 12 months. No. Seems pretty aggressive to cold call past customers like this. (They've mounted tires for me.) Would any of you take that offer? Dave
  13. I've heard a lot about HIDs clouding the lens (I am assuming you mean the headlight lens, not the lamp shape?). I wonder if this is a problem on RSTDs? Thanks for your ideas. Dave
  14. A year later, and has anyone put HID lights on their RSTD? Where did you put the ballast and igniter? Dave
  15. Before I pulled the trigger on this, I was very tempted by the new Motorola Endeavor HX1 bluetooth earphone. It uses bone conduction, so you hear and talk clearly in noisy environments. But that wouldn't let me talk to my navigator. Dave
  16. Oh, have no fear about this! I plan to do a full review, complete with photos. This is a bike-to-bike system, so I might well stick it on another rider, or force my wife to wear a helmet while driving her car. Is there some aspect of the system that you are particularly interested in? BTW, congrats on 30 years! Dave
  17. I don't have any of those things. My built-in audio system is my Road King exhaust. I will use blue-tooth to talk to my passenger and other bikes. The bluetooth will also talk to my phone and iPod. Dave
  18. What kind did you get? I have an RSTD, so I can't use the system built-into the Venture. Dave
  19. I reckon if I ever need to talk to you guys, I can call you. Some of your bladders are bigger than mine. The MX at James'? Yes! And the ride the week before. I can take them off before that and we can install them in a minute or two so you can try them on that ride. Dave
  20. We got married on 7-7-7. But, we'll be newlyweds forever! Dave
  21. Holy cow, 30 minutes after I ordered, I have a shipping notice with a tracking number. So far, I like this She-Rides joint. Dave
  22. I have wanted a pair of headsets so that my bride and I could talk, listen to music, and such. I decided to take the plunge and get a setup before our Easter time vacation ride somewhere (Destin? Big Bend?). I had been leaning heavily towards the Chatterbox Xbi2. Then someone here mentioned a Scala Rider set, and wished for a G4. So, I asked my friend Mr. Google and he pointed me to reviews and such. And, this page. Sometime, you just have to stop second-guessing and do something. So now, I have the Scala Powerset G4 coming to the house for $399, which is much less than I've seen elsewhere. Heck, one of them is $250, and a pair at $399?? I hope it works, and also that my honey doesn't check the credit card balance. Dave
  23. Where would you put the ballast for a RSTD? How big is the ballast and starter? Do you have a brand recommendation for the BI-Xenon? Dave
  24. Bogalusa? Holy smoke, I spent 3 months there doing PPDR assessments and contractor oversight. I have fond memories of the place and the people that live there. Dave
