  1. Thanks! It looks very similar to Cardo G4 I used before, which I can't mount because my Scorpion EXO-900 helmet is too thick. However, someone says they carefully peeled away the plastic shell from the foam and used the clamp. Others say they went to Radio Shack and bought some super tape that worked better than the Sena tape (which failed). Edit: They used "Superlock Strips (Radio Shack PN 64-2360)" We'll see, and I'll be taking photos, fer sure. I bought the mount with the detached boom which also comes with a thin mike to put in the jaw... you can connect one or the other. I also bought the one that is like that, but with ear buds instead of speakers. I wear ear plugs and I think the ear buds would provide that function too. However, on my first ToH ironbutt, my ear buds rubbed on the very close-fitting helmet and it was uncomfortable after 500 miles. So, I'm not sure which I'll end up with. It all comes tonight, and I'm excited.
  2. Great review. I see it on Amazon Prime for $153, which means I could have it Tuesday for $156. Before I pull the trigger, how would it attach to my helmet? The Cardo clamp I have now won't work because the helmet has a 1/2" thick profile at the bottom. Also, how does the book work with your jaw down? Dave
  3. Reminded me of an old post from V7Goose, circa 2009, when he road around Texas: Dave
  4. Ain't that the truth! 3 years later, Roxie has 70k miles on her and gets the same mpg. 140 miles and I'd be desperate. Now I've added an aux tank and hot 275 miles comfortably between gas stops. Dave
  5. So that others know what you are talking about... http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4075/4828386218_7c22f8f9ea.jpg
  6. I was responding to the comments above mine that highlighted the convenience to the shippers of the USPS. It is undeniable. And for the customer, there is a tradeoff. You pay less for shipping, but you also receive less value. When I see UPS or FedEx ground offered along with USPS, will I trade 1/3 more cost for 1/2 more value? I will. I value information. The other thing here is the experience I have with Amazon Prime. I get 2-day UPS shipping for free, and overnight for $3.99. I did pay $75 for a year of this, but that was paid for in a month or so. Or actually, at one time when I got a tire overnighted for $3.99 compared to Dennis Kirk who wanted $138 for shipping. It is difficult to pay a USPS flat rate that goes into a vacuum of non-information and unpredictable delivery scheduling, knowing that if I bought it at Amazon Prime I would pay nothing, have excellent information and solid delivery expectations. As always, YMMV. Dave
  7. You guys get way better mileage than me. My count up starts around 110 and I am sweating bullets at 150 miles. I've been bone dry at 85 too, with a west Texas head wind.
  8. Thank you for the information. It has been a while since I've used a radar detector. Am I right in remembering that V-1 has a rear-facing detector in addition to the front detector(s)? How did you mount it to not obstruct that sensor? Dave
  9. Glad it worked out for the OP. I couldn't help but notice that the observations about the USPS are neatly divided into those who ship (who love the USPS and have no problems with the tracking) and those who receive (who dislike the "tracking"). I am a receiver and have learned that those who claim to provide a "tracking" number when using USPS are wasting my time. The "tracking" I see has two entries: "it has been shipped" and "it has been delivered" (often posted days later). I groan whenever I see something has been shipped via USPS because I have to calm down, forget that I ordered it, and be relieved when it arrives. If I check USPS "tracking," I am frustrated and eventually ticked off. I am glad that the USPS allows you shippers to provide your goods at reduced cost, while providing you some sort of cover when your customers complain. The USPS has rightly decided that the shippers are their customers, not the receivers, and make it attractive for their customers. As much as I wish they would consider the desires of we the receivers, it simply isn't so. Dave
  10. Well done! Hope you enjoyed the earnin' and gettin'. Dave
  11. I am glad you are enjoying the RSTD! I agree about the stock seat. I went with Rick Butler, which I've used for my iron butts. After 65,000 miles though, the foam is deteriorating I think. I've had a lot of iron butt and near-iron butt days, and I am not light. I've crushed the seat too much. No worries, I'll replace the foam, I think. The stock Brickstones were terrible. I thought the bike was supposed to handle heavy. When the tires were worn out at 5000 miles, I listened to others and went with a different tire (Avons in my case, now running E3s). They made a huge improvement. Not sure why Yamaha would ship with these things... people on test drives must have lower opinions of the bike than they should. Dave
  12. I can't speak to the bubs, beyond thinking louder than aftermarket == more tiring on big-mile days. I put on Harley-Davidson touring pipes and they were too loud for the type of riding I do. BUT, they were awesome as a training tool. I left the intersection near the freeway and let each gear run until I hit the rev limiter, then shifted and repeated. I hit the freeway in 3rd like a missile, and I knew how much this bike (I also have a 2006 RSTD) had at higher revs. And it sounded like an F1 race car to boot. Try hitting the rev limiter a few times, and realize that the engine has way more to give, as tazmocycle said. This is a 4 cylinder, not a v-twin, and is ridden differently. I'll just echo what you said. I don't use 5th with a trailer, or rarely at all unless I am really moving and going down hill. 4th is fine for super-legal speeds. ;-) More responsive too. I even think I get better fuel economy at most speeds if I don't use 5th. Lugging is like pouring gas out the tail pipe. Dave
  13. I think the igniter was zip-tied under the bucket, but the ballast was under the left-side neck cover. Or vice-versa. The plastic just behind the steering column. I wish they would make the wires longer. I also wish they would stop making the wires bright red. Hard to hide! Brenda, I don't recall if you have them, but passing lamps are a great option. For one thing, they give you the important triangle of light that lets others see you. For another, they don't require hiding. If you are really thinking of lighting things up, you can get self-contained HID driving lamps. Something like THIS, although there are a variety of makes and styles. You might also consider an LED headlight. An advanced version like the new Phase 7 from Truck Lite looks decent. Reviews and photos HERE. BTW, I am one of those whose discount HID died an early death. It wasn't that much brighter than my Sylvania Silverstar Ultra to begin with (if at all), so I chalked up the wasted money to experience. Dave
  14. Here is another sort of bracket, super easy to install: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2644/3691215573_0aa375d98c.jpg
  15. Ditto here. They sounded great on day rides... like a F1-racer when accelerating onto freeways. Loved it. Until I did a few 750 mile days. I tried using earplugs, but any noise adds to fatigue and they were too loud. I went back to stock, but now I envy GoldWings and their whisper quiet ride. To each his own! Dave
  16. I cannot find the rear luggage rack that sits in lieu of the passenger seat. Can you send me a part number or source? Dave
  17. It seems that the purpose of obstructing the license plate was to prevent identification while the participants jointly broke laws, including obstruction of patrol cars. "jointly broke laws" -- sounds like organized crime to me. Rather than make discussion of the camera, the rider should have been placed into custody because of the suspected organized crime. While he was in jail, there would have been ample time to obtain the required search warrant. Gibvel is right, though. This sort of thing causes ill will towards motorcyclists by the general public. Even as a rider myself, I was disgusted by the riders and, to my shame, hoping something dreadful would have happened. Dave
  18. I like your install much better than mine: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7242/6901574134_1c7e720c7d.jpg On my first ride with it, my rear tire blew and I went down after safely making it to the shoulder. The luggage rack "broke" when the bike hit the ground. I was using it as this method so that I could easily ride with my wife on trailer trips. I think it is smarter to just carry the pillion set up in the trailer and trade it with the fender set up (like yours). One thing I learned on the ride though, is that I can start with the main tank running. When I get to a tick below full, I opened the tourtank and let it backfill the main tank. I did that a few times until the maintank no longer backfilled, then let them both drain together. Worked really well and I didn't have to hit the reserve pitcock and never had a lack of fuel. Just an option. That is rather insulting, to infer that I cannot ride 18 hours without benefit of illegal drugs. Would you have a problem if whatever organization you belong to installed a breathalyzer on your bike? You know, some bar hoppers have been known to drink before riding. I guess you do too. Too, it would be a logistical problem. I leave at 4AM... what drug lab is open then? Or which is open at 11PM when I get in? Finally, the problem is riding while impaired. Impairment can easily be caused by over tiredness. Or talking on the cellphone. Or needing to pee really badly. The short answer is, yes, I would have a problem with that. I don't need another nanny in my life. Dave
  19. Your shortest was over twice my shortest, and I was only going 75mph with headwinds. LOL Dave
  20. Congrats! Great achievement! Did you calculate fuel economy? What kind of range did you get? I liked the APRS tracking, but it seemed to check out around the same place. Is that a service hole? The other aspect is the lack of "check ins" like you get with SPOT. But it seemed accurate and updated fast. Dave
  21. Thank you all for your help! Thanks Derrek, this is really useful. I can get my shoppin' on! Thanks for the offer. I don't know that I'll go with a Clearview. Does yours have the recurve? Like it? Nico, thanks. PM sent. Dave
  22. I regret that I have a wedding to attend this Saturday. Otherwise I'd be there! Dave
  23. What size windscreen do you have? Stock height? Do you have the vent? Dave
  24. I have to replace the windshield on my RSTD. I started by looking for a stock windscreen, and all I found was this: STR-1D607-11-00 7” lower than stock, made of tough polycarbonate with Quantum Coating® for superior abrasion resistance and longer life. I couldn't find the stock size at the Yamaha website. I'll admit that the only place I could see the windscreen listed was in accessories. I couldn't find it in the parts section. So I started looking for alternatives. The most popular seems to be the Clearview. Threads here suggest that people are getting the shorter version, with the vent. The recurve is both praised and cursed. Any comments on this, comfort, mpg, passenger buffeting? How does the wider size impact attachments to the handlebars? How about riding in the rain, which I do a lot of? The stock windscreen keeps me nice and dry, but it kills my mpg. Another option is Cee Baileys. Anyone have this?? WHen would you use light green? What else is there to fit the stock RSTD quick connect? How does the smoke windscreen look on a midnight bike? Photo examples? Thanks so much for your experience and opinions! Dave
  25. Yeah, thanks Kreg for allowing Janet to invite us. It was a great time, and called for an extra strength Mylanta night! So much food! But the burned sausage was calling my name! Dave
