I like MSST a lot, especially how you can say how far you can go without stopping and it will indicate that place, so you can look for gas or food or lodging around there. But GPS Babel at the time didn't quite understand the format (it was secret) and the results of conversion were wonky. Does GPS Babel handle it better now? Dave

I like the Harley Ride planner, but it adds about 10x more waypoints than I like. The result is an ugly ugly route when viewed on a route planner. I use MapSource, and manage my maps through that. I got the map plan that updates 4 times a year, and MapSource is the app that updates my GPSr. One reason I use MapSource is that it easily manages my "default" locations and past trips. I don't ever recreate a route from scratch. I build on my experience. For example, when I head west, just about all the routing programs I use (Google Maps, etc) want to send me up the toll road and out I-10, which are congested roads. Instead, I head down US59 (AWAY from traffic) and then take Spur 10 up to US36. I reach I-10 at Sealy, skipping almost all the traffic. The net result is a better, more enjoyable, more scenic trip. Reusing this knowledge is easy in MapSource. When I am done with a trip, I download my tracks and routes and waypoints from the GPSr, and store them in a dated file. When I want to reuse information, I open these files and grab the important bits for my new route. And finally, a word about Points of Interest. Most POI sites include MapSource-friendly files. I've got all the rest areas, truck plazas, and Dairy Queens loaded into MapSource files. Usually, they are added as POIs to the GPSr's firmware (using POILoader), but frequently they will form routing points. I may not stop at every rest area, but a route from rest area to rest area breaks up the route into friendly chunks that works well with my GPSr's mapping. If I build a route to El Paso, it is not friendly to have the GPSr tell me that my next turn is in 700 miles. Adding rest areas breaks that into a more soul-satisfying 100 mile chunk. Wizard675' experience doesn't quite match mine. The routing algorithm on the GPSr and in MapSource are subtly different. I think it might boil down to expected travel speeds on class of roadway. So, my routes are sometimes different in unremarkable ways, even with the same map product installed. Dave

I installed Speed Bleeders and pumped a lot of clean fluid out. I wouldn't think there are bubbles. And don't bubbles give you a spongy feeling? This is a very solid lock. Dave -
I grease mine, but I don't know if I should. Seems like metal-on-metal action wants grease... It's messy and seems to find my pants, so I'd rather not do it if someone can tell me authoritatively that the ball doesn't need grease. Dave

Stealer told me that it is a symptom of the clutch fluid being cool. It has higher viscosity, so it is a bit grabby. I don't know if it is true, but I sometimes get that myself on the first start of the day, but never after that. Dave -

I'm pretty sure it was assembled correctly. Squidley supervised my reassembly closely. This tight clutch has only happened since I replaced the clutch fluid. Is there something in that procedure that I could have done wrong? Dave -
The worst part of this trip was knowing that I was riding right past so many VR members. That day I was going from Minneapolis to Omaha, and had to be there by dinner. So, of course, I went via Fargo. Dave

I ride an '06 RSTD. I got mileage very similar to yours, at speeds similar to yours. That was true two weeks ago in SD when I passed through (the terrain was much nicer than I expected). I rode down I-29 from Fargo towards Omaha. However, I've discovered that my trailer wheels are toed out... I've scrubbed off the tread twice in 4500 miles. I'm hoping that when the wheels are true, they will roll and I'll get better mileage. Dave

On my recent ride to upper midwest, I had lots of chances to wave. I'll wave at about everyone, including trikes. I noticed that wavebacks were pretty scant on the freeways. And yes, the least responsive were the Goldwings. The most responsive were sportbikes, although they waved late (they didn't expect it??). On two-lane roads, wavebacks were much more common. It almost felt like interstate roads were for out-of-towners, and two-lane strips were for locals, and you should be friendly to locals? *shrug* I wave to signify my solidarity with others. If they don't want to be solid with me, that's their personality disorder. I also wave because looking for bikes keeps my eyes on the road and my alertness up. If I happen to notice a motorcycle as it is abreast of me, well then shame on me. On the freeways there are precious few distractions, and if I don't see a bike it is because my alertness has waned. Time to take a break. Dave

Clutch Fluid - replaced

So, I replaced the fluid Friday morning, but didn't ride until yesterday. Immediately, I found that my clutch behaves very differently. I used to have about 30% of the clutch in the friction zone. Now, I have about 1/8" of friction zone; I pull it in, and the clutch will engage after about 1/8 of travel letting it out. I stalled several times until I got used to it. I replaced the clutch spring with skydoc_17's upgrade kit, and never felt much difference. I wonder if I am just now feeling it, with the changed fluid? Or did I do something wrong? Dave -

I did have to remove the fins. The Speedbleeder I replaced it with is much shorter. I had no idea the fins were so easy to remove. Thanks! Dave -

I can bring an adapter with legs... the lift could be tricky. I'll see if I can bring it, but you can lift a bike, put on the legs, then use the lift for another bike. I'll bring chairs for me and Jamie, and a couple others if they will fit in the trailer. Dave

My Silverstar ULTRA has lasted for 18 months, 35,000+ miles. The HID I bought is already seeming flaky (it's the cheap Canadian one you will see mentioned on this site). It doesn't seem much brighter than my ULTRA in actual practice at night, if at all. I took out my still-working ULTRA to put in the HID, and thought about putting it back in half way through my recent trip. I'm glad you have received lots of "good" and "useful" feedback from the ULTRA haters. That could be useful in a few years when your ULTRA burns out, if your experience is like mine. Dave

I have a light on my way to work where the detectors frequently don't detect me. Texas has a defense for proceeding through the intersection (lights are, by law, required to detect motorcycles; if they don't... grayness), so I will wait for at least half a cycle length (120 second cycle length for this intersection), and then go through. Sometimes I will turn right (we have a right on red law) and do a U-turn before I have to shift into second. I don't know your laws, but you might look to see what is legal in your area. You clearly sat at the light and waited, and did a safe maneuver. Dave -
GPS Mounting & Connecting on an RSTD

My wife uses Google Latitude to track me on my Android phone, and it works with Spotwalla to post it to a map. But as mentioned, there are plenty of places where cell signal stinks, not to mention DATA cell coverage. On my trip to Michigan, just about the entire UP was out of data coverage. On the other hand, my phone gets great GPS coverage in the saddle bag. I knew where I was all the time, but no one else did. LOL Dave
