  1. That's dang cool. You think they are loud until you remember how loud Harriers are. LOL Dave
  2. Email him the link to the video: I've shared it several times already! Dave
  3. I got my guards at the class. Honestly, you can go to Home Depot and buy appropriate diameter black plastic tubing (sprinkler systems? Drainage?). Cut it to length then split it lengthwise to go over your crash bars. Edit: I think they also mentioned people using old garden hose. Dave
  4. Ha ha! I came here after getting my notification that a trailer discussion was updated. I forgot I subscribed to this as I was researching trailers, pre-HF! This is a cool little trailer, to be sure! Dave
  5. Yes, mine came with standard lights. I put on the LEDs for the reason you state, plus there is much less draw on my wiring. I actually didn't think about the LEDs matching my bike's taillights, but that is really true. I actually feel much safer pulling my trailer, because these LED lights (from Harbor Freight, natch) are really big and bright. I was confused about your comment that you pull your trailers into your hotel room. But checking out the Tom Simmons site (flash slideshow) and the word doc (Drag-N Trailers), I see that you are speaking of the "Little Tag-a-Long Trailers", not the Harbor Freight Tag-Along. Those are really neat trailers, much cooler than the basic HF trailer. Of course, when you pay nearly $1900 for a trailer, it ought to be cooler than a $500 trailer. I agree with your comment on Space Bags. We use the Jumbo size one to hold our bedding, but this is the one with the vacuum port that works perfectly with my air pump. It flattens the bag down to 2" thick instead of 4-5" thick, and keeps it dry if we need to open the trailer in rain (e.g., if we need to get out our rain suits). Dave
  6. Those of us traveling long distances and who have little vacation time would have appreciated the "free day". Could you please remove the reference to Memorial Day from the initial post, so we don't get our hopes up? Or maybe strike it out so it remains, but is clearly not available? It seems possible that with the free day, if I have vacation time then the 4th would be best. Get up that way Memorial Day weekend, putter around my folks in MI that week, and hit Maintenance Day on the way home. Could maybe breakfast with y'all on the 4th before having to pull out. Dave
  7. I went with Perry (Pktexas) and another friend. (Link to article) I very much enjoyed it. The instructors were very good at explaining the theory and drills. They were very encouraging and excelled at identifying our errors and correcting them. Read the link for more. As far as dropping Roxie, of course I did. Many times! I bought the plastic protectors, so there was no damage. I can let you borrow them if you want. Dave
  8. I met up with a buddy at the Buc-cees in Pearland, thence to ride to a Texans-Cowboys party. I was gassing up when I spied a white RSTD right behind me. I went over and introduced myself. Then I introduced myself again because he had music in his helmet and didn't hear me the first time. LOL His name was Ed. I told him that I had to say hi, since RSTDs are so rare. He didn't realize that I was also riding one until I pointed it out. RSTDs are just so rare that you can hardly believe you are seeing one! I asked if he ever had heard of VentureRiders, and he told me that he is addicted to the site. Ed even knew who I was! I suggested that he join, because then he'd be more attuned to the fellowship. We had a meet n eat yesterday, he should have come! There are so many intangible and tangible benefits of this site! His is a pretty white 2006, set up solo. Other than that, it is pretty stock. Really clean. He came over to look at Roxie, and declared her really tricked out. I don't think so, but she isn't stock. I pointed out my airhorn as one mod I did that I found important. He told me he'd been trying to figure out how to add the horn. Well, no need to struggle! Join the site and send up a flare! We're all happy to help. Honestly, Ed, you don't need to join the site. Send me a PM if you are able, and I'll come help you figure out your airhorn. And more. But you really ought to think about joining the rabble. We're like family: completely dysfunctional! Dave
  9. The class is held about 10 minutes from my house. If you want to eat, we can meet beforehand and you can go (I took it last year). I'll come for the practice time... grads can return for free. There is a nice diner about 5 minutes from the site: Avalon Diner on US59. Dave
  10. I guess you assume the truck was speeding? Why is that? Perhaps OP, Steve, was going 20 under the speed limit. He was being cautious. Perhaps the truck could generally see well enough to go the speed limit, but couldn't *perceive* someone going so slowly. I know that I have almost rammed into cars in clear / dry / light conditions, simply because it doesn't seem possible that someone would drive so slowly. It could be that the truck was speeding. You and I don't know based on Steve's post. You may make heap good sense, but it isn't on-target here. As bad as the RSV is in rear lighting, the RSTD is even worse. One shabby taillight, is all. No place to easily add a light bar. I added run/turn lights and upgraded to the 100 LED taillight. I've been considering adding a yellow strobe to my trailer hitch socket. 11. Great story! I love sharing my bike with people who are enthused. All sorts of kids like to look at themselves in the shiny bike. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3121/2832290930_0050460702.jpg
  12. A friend of mine got an "aPad" -- essentially an iPad-like computer that runs Android instead. Here's the one he got. I've asked him for an updated review, but every time I have asked him before, he has adored it. I think I'll get one when they come out with one running Android 2.2. The ones I have seen run 2.1, but that's a far sight better than 1.6. The fault I had with the iPad when I played with it for several days was typing. My Android phone used "Swype" where the iPad required individual keypresses. After using Swype, the iPad seemed clunky. I could type on my phone twice as fast, for crying out loud. They are rurmored to be working on Swype for the iPad and iPhone, but until that happens, the clunky interface (and price) makes the iPad a no-go for me. Dave
  13. Fabulous report! I did pretty close to the opposite route on my trip to Michigan in July. You made it sound easy! Dave
  14. Thanks so much! Sounds like the half inch ones. And glue! Dave
  15. Except the depth?
  16. That looks great. Thanks! Unfortunately, I have no plugs left to measure to ensure I get the right size. Are they 2"x2" x1/2"? x1"? Or are they 1-7/8"? Dave
  17. All four of mine are gone... 8000 miles or so. I'm sure there is a good solution, but right now duct tape seems adequate. If I could find a fabricator to bend aluminum caps for me, I think I'll pop rivet them on. Dave
  18. But the fabric is so nice! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4010/4446364116_2886458ef8_m.jpg
  19. A friend of mine got bar end mirrors for her Norton. Anyone ever try these on a Venture or RSTD? Ever ride with them? Do they make whistling noises? She says they make a handy clearance gauge when she is "white lining". It's sure a different look, and maybe impossible to get used to. Dave
  20. Sounds epic! Welcome back!
  21. Without admitting nuthin, this mighta been a precursor event: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4440940370_cd8f62556d.jpg
  22. I too use a GPS. The only problem I have with the speed-o being off is that I cannot set the cruise control high enough for West Texas where the limit is 80mph. I've thought about the SpeedoHealer (linky goodness) but when you increase the speed-o, you decrease the odometer (so I've heard). My odo is off now, but less than the speed-o is off. I suppose I can split the difference.... The inaccurate speed-o hasn't changed my love of the bike. It's not like I ride the speed limit anyways. Ride it like you stole it, and happily, the speed-o will let you think you are flying down the road while you are actually legal. Welcome to the site. I hope you pay and stick around. Dave
  23. I do value the idea of a cigarette adapter-sized power outlet. I have a 12" or 18" Powerlet to Cigarette adapter cable that I use for things like my air mattress pump. But one of the things about RSTD's is that we don't have a nice weatherproof place like the trunk. The Powerlets are about half the size of the ciggie outlet, and are designed for positive connection, so I can run my wires out in the open without much fear. At least from wind; heavy rain still makes me disconnect for safeties sake. I like your solution though. Dave
  24. WARNING: I don't have an RSV, I have an RSTD. What I did was add two Powerlets to the side of my bike. Then I created a Powerlet to USB cable (using instructions here). My thinking is that Powerlets are designed to carry current, while cigarette outlets are meant to light cigarettes inside a weather protected vehicle. *shrug* So far, the USB cable has worked for about 10K miles this summer, in all weather, charging my phone, etc, inside the saddle bag. In your case, perhaps you could consider using that DIY USB cable to add the USB to your fairing. Run it directly to your axillary fuse box under your seat, or fused to your battery if you don't have a fuse box yet. It comes with a bracket to attach it to a surface. Or, as shown in the DIY page, you could place it into a tank bag. I used a tank bag for the first time on my RSTD this last trip, and it was very convenient; I sometimes put my phone in there. The USB wire I got was labeled NAPA and I have seen it in auto parts stores. It is labeled part number 782-6003. 25. Seaking wrote about having 17 confirmed bird strikes in a year. 17! My favorite was The Woodpecker Incident. That one made me laugh until I couldn't breathe. Dave
