  1. Love Five Guys. Whattaburger is great too. Both are better than In-N-Out... I've no idea what the left coast people see in that. Lame fries, weak burger. Widely available nod goes to McD's, which is reliably delicious globally. Dave
  2. The class is offered by certified instructors throughout the USA. I'm lucky in that there is a class here about five minutes from my house in the Houston area. I know they go to Dallas and San Antonio when a class "makes". So check the website because this really is a good class to take in person. Dave
  3. Any more thinking about a date? My Spring is filling up and I'd like to save the date. Dave
  4. No, there were some flood lights from a yachting supply place, intended for area security lighting on a boat's mast. As a flood, as much light went up as down when used as a passing lamp. Almost fine during the day, but I ride a lot at night. Dave Sent from my HTC One S CM-10-20130130-NIGHTLY-Ville
  5. Interesting. The lens doesn't look particularly strange, and despite your comment about there being a bunch of stuff in the bucket, there is room. I guess I'll buy one in a couple months from Amazon, where they won't warn me about stuff and I can send stuff back unashamedly. I have plenty of brightness with my SilverStar ULTRA headlamp and HELLA 35W passing lamps. I just want to get some watts back. I had a bad HID experience and the LED passing lamps I've seen that fit our housing are flood lights, which isn't acceptable to me. So the Phase 7 is one of my few options. I'll save this thread and post back when I install the Phase 7. Or fail. Dave
  6. I understand that the Truck-Lite/Kuryakn Phase 7 LED headlamps will work. http://www.kuryakyn.com/products/4205/phase-7-headlights-passing-lamps That's what I was planning to go to. You understand that it won't work? Dave
  7. Yup. http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4039/4545191029_f6bf31b44b_o.jpg
  8. Not sure what you mean? Do you have to replace the whole bucket? I ask because I am close to replacing my lamp with an LED. You got me worried. Dave Sent from my HTC One S CM 10-20130120-NIGHTLY-Ville
  9. I keep wondering if this would be at all fun in the urban flatland of Houston? You drove 55 miles to Lubbock; I'd drive farther than that to see a hill. Dave
  10. Very useful, thanks! So that fuel sender connection at the top of the tank doesn't need anything? I might just unplug the valve between the aux and the fuel pump and put in a right angle fitting, taking the tank out of the equation. Thanks for your replies! Dave
  11. I have an aux fuel cell connected via a valved T between the Main/Reserve selector and the fuel pump. Can I use that at Maintenance Days to run my bike if I take the tank off? Do I need to short the fuel sender unit or something? Dave
  12. I was planning to do this in 2011, until I responded to the Joplin tornado and the summer went bye-bye. I figured I could do it in 8800 miles, which doesn't sound so bad for 10 days. A big day every other, and I think you'd be OK. Except for weather. Except for the delays in getting receipts in every state. If I ever build up time to getting 10 days off, I might try it. Dave
  13. Came out here since the weather was so nice. Arrived just in time to see the Jaguars score. Grrr! Paved lot, nice place. 29.29514, –95.73280 Sent from my HTC One S CM 10-20121116-NIGHTLY-Ville
  14. Did you go before the place was on the show? My experience is that the publicity makes the place decline, unless it was super duper busy before. Dave
  15. I might maybe get my kids to come too? Not sure that's what you are aiming for though. Maybe if you promised demos/rides of your Ural? Dave
  16. I have two kids in Lubbock, so coming up is always on my mind. It's pretty nice in April or May there. I've subscribed to the thread so that I can know if this moves forward. Dave
  17. Show off! FWIW, I run Ubuntu on the desktop and Android on the tablets. I do sometimes dual boot into Win7 because Garmin Basecamp needs it. Otherwise, trouble-free Linux for me (at home). Speaking of trouble-free, I understand they run OS/2 on the MTA turnstiles, and they only reboot once a decade, whether they need it or not. We're upgrading to Win 8 at the office, because we do development and we need to stay ahead of the clients. We're doing it mostly for Windows Phone 8, believe it or not. Dave
  18. +1 for the Custom Dynamics 100 LED tail light. I sometimes read traffic signs going the other way with the amazingly bright light. You don't recover any power from this LED but I feel that making the tail light visible is very important on the RSTD, since there is but the one running light. I added LED donuts to the turn signals, but this light simply overwhelms them. This tail light is about as important a safety upgrade as you can buy for the RSTD, IMO. Dave
  19. Thanks for hosting another great MD. Yes, I missed most of it, but I was lucky enough to see some of y'all and see the preparation. Clearly it was a labour of love. I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer. Best of all, Roxie was finally made whole, with the completion of the saddle bag repairs. Thanks Hal! Dave
  20. I had some free time in Lubbock* visiting the kids at TTU for Parents Weekend. Wish I knew about the dealer then. Would it last an ironbutt? Dave * - we went to the Silent Wings Museum at the airport instead. Highly recommended.
  21. Wow. It's also remarkable how hard it is to tell that he hit his brakes. Aside from the way the bike reacts, I mean.
  22. The common theme between OWEN and Twigg is that both knew their limits. Well done, I say! Dave
  23. I've got a conflict starting at noon o'clock, but I am gonna try to get up there while the roosters are crowing so that I can catch people as they arrive. Plus I want to see what you've done to the place! Dave
  24. Nicely written, and sympathetic to my own views. On the matter of accident experience among LD riders versus others, I completed a 2012 IBA Memorial ride on Saturday. All the dangerous stuff happened in the first 200 miles: a truck decided to turn left between me and the car in front of me. Could have happened at any time in the ride. And then, a buzzard took off too slowly and hit my windscreen (and almost took out OWEN riding behind me). Again, could have happened at any time. That said, part of the reason the danger happened early is because we planned it that way. We rode a good but not-limited-access Texas Highway in the morning, so that we could ride the nice-fat interstate on the way home. We intentially limited our accident exposure when we needed to. Also, I got extra sleep for days prior and pre-hydrated for days prior. I carefully prepped my bike. In short, I was probably more prepared than the usual casual rider. Preparation begets safety. And LD riders, in my experience, are as a rule prepared. I've never successfully explained my desire for LD riding. I'll look with interest to see if you give me some ideas to try out. Dave
  25. Prayers sent! I'm still recovering from my broken collar bone in April. This is a potentially long road.
