Thank you for the speedy reply! I am glad you are satisfied with the controller. How long is the lead to the battery? Do I need to think about an extension? Dave

I saw the weather report for Saturday morning (40?!) and looked for Big Bend (34 in Terlingua), and that made me realize that I needed to get going on the heated clothing purchase. My confusion now is on controllers. Do they all work on everyone's clothing? I see that the Tour Master Synergy jackets/vests come with controllers and harnesses, but they look cheap from the photos. The Firstgear Dual Portable controller looks well made, but will it work with Tour Master? EXO2 -- do I really have to mount it on my handle bars?? Are the plugs all compatible? Can I use a Firstgear controller with Tour Master products? What if I want to buy a Tour Master jacket now, and perhaps a different brand of gloves later? Will everything plug into each other? I am not installing the harness. Instead, I'll plug into my Powerlets -- it's one reason I installed them. I suppose I can lop off the fused connectors and use a right angle Powerlet plug. Unless they all come with SAE connectors?? Building some SAE connectors would be handy for when I need to charge my battery (Powerlets can transfer power both ways). What is all'y'all's experience with this stuff? Dave

I early voted, and glad I did. There was a record early turnout here, and reports are that the polls are packed. Dave

Is there an organizer or something? Want to add it to the calendar so we can RSVP (or not) and at least we'd know how many to expect at breakfast? Dave

Usually, I've seen groups with the lead bike in the left position. But I've also been with bikes where the lead shifts to the right position in the left lane, if there are two lanes. I think the theory is that the right position in the left lane is more visible to cars being overtaken; that's why I ride like that when I am by myself. But in a group, that means the lead bike moves about 3' when changing lanes, while the second bike goes from shoulder to shoulder -- ~20'. Dave

Owen mentioned to me that one thing he didn't want to miss at the rally were the tree sculptures. If you don't know, Hurricane Ike created what we in FEMA call "Salt Water Trees". That is, the storm surge salted the soil, the trees ate the salt, and died. Galveston's solution to this disaster is to create sculptures from the dead trees. They are scattered across the island, and some are quite remarkable. They are worth seeing. So today, I tracked down the brochure (PDF) and spent a bit of time creating a POI file for them. The attached file contains the locations in MapSource, POI (gpx), and Google Earth KMZ formats. The trees are numbered according to the brochure, and located using the published address. Caveat utilitor. I hope this helps out y'all heading to the rally! Dave

What would cause her to burn oil?
Dave77459 replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks for your reassurance and ideas. Usually when I change the oil, it is new looking in the site glass. This time it is murky already. I'll keep an eye on it. She's warm now, but it's a cool day. I'll let her sit a bit and then look for smoke. I haven't seen any, but my first start of the day is always in the dark. Stupid DST. I hope to take her in this morning for a chat with the dealer about a different matter. That'll give me an idea of what sort of resistance I can expect. Dave -
For those of you interested in HF business, I just got my new axle yesterday. I had talked to them on 8/16 and they quoted 6-8 weeks. It ended up being 10 weeks. They were delivered by FedEx instead of overland freight, so I guess they realized they were beyond the quoted time. I didn't unpack the boxes (2 of them) yet, but judging by how much complaining my daughter did when I tricked her into carrying them into the garage , they are the parts. Now to get the axle to Squidley to replace the one he got me, and this episode will be complete. Dave

Last weekend, I noticed a mysterious red light come on when I rev limited in 2nd gear. I'd never seen it before, and the manual was inconvenient. So I checked the oil level and was shocked to see that it was at the bottom of the sight glass, and looked rather black. I just changed the oil, and it was black and nasty. Clearly, she burned oil since the last change (about 4000 miles ago). I changed her oil just before my trip to Zion National Park, Four Corners, etc. I towed a trailer on that trip, so 3500 miles of those 4000 were towed. She's never burned any oil (except when I overfilled her, before I realized she took less than the manual). She just rolled over 50,000 miles. What causes a bike to burn oil? Dave

I'm glad you found a method that works. Didn't Mapsource come with the maps that are in your GPS? Did you use the "Detail" pull down to select "Highest"? (Also, View -> Map Detail -> Highest) Sometimes minor roads are not shown at Medium Detail. I use Mapsource all the time on my [different model] Garmin, and it works great. I subscribed to the map update plan so I get 4 updates a year, with updated maps and points of interest. *shrug* Dave

I guess "dramatic" is in the eye of the beholder! This lady had wandered off to practice while she waited her turn. She crashed and her bike laid completely on it's side. Oil poured out even more than is usual for a Harley, and the one instructor had to mop it up with towels. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1327/5114145219_8cdab4f76f.jpg But you are right, the lady with the frequent dropping points did hers pretty noisily. This video illustrates her most common fault: pulling on the clutch lever instead of the handlebar. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZl40q_Tjtc]YouTube - RLAPH 10/23/2010 - 16[/ame]

It was great to see Owen, and I planned to lead him over and leave to do Saturday errands. But the instructors said their photographer was absent, and asked me to stick around with my camera. So after I voted, I came back and took 1438 photos plus 18 videos. Then I was able to practice. Luckily no one got photos of me! First of all, here is the motorman on the Victory Vision. Notice Owen in the background, comparatively creeping around the course while the big Vision catches up. Impressive! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX0QhfqvNvY]YouTube - RLAPH 10/23/2010 - 18[/ame] Here's Owen doing the slow speed weave, their first drill: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1428/5114763577_d0aaef04b6.jpg And here's the instructor on Owen's bike doing the offset weave. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1240/5115364386_efb551d9b0.jpg And here's what I saw way too much of. Most of my photos will remain safely secreted away for future use. BTW, after her fifth drop, the instructor suggested her bike might be too big. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1331/5114143615_9b1947fd4a.jpg

That kit died for me after flickering a few times. CCC said I needed a bigger fuse to send more juice to the ballast, but the existing fuse didn't pop? Not sure how adding a bigger fuse would help, since the existing one was ample. Whatever. I went back to the same Silverstar Ultra that I'd been using for a couple years. It was almost as bright anyways when both were aimed properly. I know that particular HID kit worked well for others, and I know some people diss the Silverstar (but maybe not the Ultra), so there is not a one-size-fits all answer. I'm glad people have options. I thought that driving lights were intended to illuminate the road surface, while passing lamps "let you see what you are passing" -- ditches. Most driving lights that I have seen are rectangular with a more directed beam, while passing lamps scatter the beam more, so that I can see the deer that I am passing. It's not a matter of aim, it's a matter of beam pattern. I'm not particularly interested in driving lights. I run my passing lamps full time. Dave

The link seems to point back to the Electrical Connections Turn Signal Conversion kit. If so, you might appreciate this how-to. There aren't a lot of replies, but read the ones that mention problems and how they were solved. Dave

We went to the Original Mexican Cafe, which is conveniently on the "far side" of the Strand. The Original Mexican Cafe 1401 Market St. Galveston, TX 77550 Phone: (409)762-6001 N29.30809 W94.78352 I've gone there a couple years in a row now, because that side of the Strand doesn't fill up as fast and parking is more ample. Mine fell off on my first sizeable ride. I was on my way to V7Goose's at the time, and when I called him he clued me into the spare. Went to the dealership when I got home and asked for a replacement at their cost. They said 'no... that's a maintenance issue'. I pointed out that it wasn't really an excuse, because they had been paid just before the trip for service (oil change, IIRC), and the receipt said they had charged me to check all the bolts. Oops. They didn't have the "special screw" (that's what the fiche called it), so they special ordered it. And it never came in and never came in. I went back in for my next service and asked them again about the screw. When I got my bike back, they'd put in a standard bolt and not the special screw. That's when I decided that I probably knew more about my bike than they did, and weened myself off their service department. So, in a way, having that bolt fall out did me a favor. Still would like the 'special screw' though. Dave

In a recent thread, scope59 showed how he installed Moto-lights on his front caliper. They were really nice looking, and reminded me that I had thought to do something similar. In my case, I had thought about adding some BikeVis Bullet Pods. These are little LED lights that would work great on the brake caliper. I'm particularly interested in using the PodMod accessory to make them "twinkle". I don't need light down low, but this would enhance my visibility. In comparison to the $500 moto-lights, the $84 for the BikeVis lights + PodMod is affordable, and I think the twinkling is really effective. Has anyone added these to the 2nd Gen? Dave PS, here's a video. The WBW review was featured on our site's right margin, which is how I came to learn about these things.
