    I started using the heel shifter because the toe shifter was so close to my boot (I wear steel toed boots) that my foot felt trapped. I like using it now, and feel more authoritative with my shifting. Dave

    I guess I am wondering if everyone understands that I didn't pay anything. I just agreed to pay if the work is not covered. Sometimes conversations evolve and statements are made to others, and ideas get muddied. I hope the work is covered, and I've had no indications that it won't be. I'm just a worry wort, and trying to keep my hand on my wallet. I love that most y'all are essentially jumping to my defense. What a great group! I am not sure about those first gen owners who have put on 50% more miles, but took 8 times longer to do so. Either the bike is too slow to accumulate miles at a 2nd gen rate, or it is too uncomfortable to ride. Dave

    I think they are being prudent. I can't really blame them for wanting to not be on the hook if Yamaha says it isn't covered by the warranty. It's kinda scary to be on the hook for that kind of money, and if I think so, they should too. Dave

    The only thing I was surprised about was the idea that it could be done in 3 weeks. Moonbattery, that. How much time would you think it would take to take an engine out a 2nd Gen, open it up, and diagnose the cause of a hole? Dave

    ... of his local Yamaha PRO dealership, and states he is here because the engine on his RSTD blew up. The service manager smiles and says, "you are kidding, right?" The man assures him that he is not. Maybe it wasn't an explosion, but there was a cloud of oil and his engine lost power. It was exciting to get to the shoulder from the left lane, dodging between cars in the right. So then the man tells the manager that he and a buddy had seen the hole in a mirror, and it is in the front of the engine, near the seam of the lower and upper case. The service manager is filled with wonder, because he'd never heard of a hole in a RSTD or Venture in his 12 years of experience with Yamaha. Later, the man comes in to sign the agreement to pay 6 hours/$600 if the diagnostic determines that the fault isn't covered by the warranty. He overhears the head technician exclaim in disbelief that there is a hole, because the service manager had just told him so. Clearly both the tech and the manager are excited at the extremely novel problem. The man's friend later overhears the tech in the garage, telling another wrench about the exciting news. The service manager explains that they service bikes FIFO, and that it will be the end of the next week before they can get to the man's bike. He warns the man that it could take over three weeks to complete the repair. The man says that would be speedy indeed, because his club members thought it would be closer to eight weeks. The service manager looks down, abashed, and concedes that scenario is more likely. The man and his friend leave the bike behind, after discussing with the service manager how members of the club would want to lay eyes on the destroyed engine, to see themselves what had happened. This will be done, it is agreed, unless Yamaha requires the parts to be sent for their analysis. Thus ends the opening stages of Roxie's repair.

    Is this the kit you have, with the bi-xenon bulb? The one I bought uses a motor to change the bulb for high-beam. How does this one work? And why must these kits always have the infernal glaring red wire? It sticks out like a sore thumb on my midnight RSTD. Dave

    Hi Mike, I got a lift home from Squidley and we pulled her out of the rain to see the hole. I haven't drained oil out... not sure that I should. I've had several suggestions to not appear to do any tampering. What do you think? BTW, the oil is right at the bottom of the sight glass when sitting up. Thanks Dave. I appreciate hearing your opinion and description of the process. I am sort disheartened to hear the 2 month estimate, but stuff takes time. Dave

    You will definitely hear how this goes! What can I say? I was a boy scout! In truth, I was towing a trailer, filled mostly with chairs for people to sit in during maintenance days. I wish I had been carrying my micro stove: coulda made coffee! Someone said that I made some radical manoeuvres right after the "bang". I thought I was pretty smooth, having no power and needing to cut through a line of cars in the right lane to reach the shoulder. But afterward, we saw the rear wheel was coated in oil. Coulda been scary! I think the trailer acted as a drogue chute to keep me pointing straight. See? A trailer is safety equipment! Jealousy, I say! Squidley came over to look at Roxie and see if he could find the hole (see below). We discussed possible options. I am inclined to call the regional office, explain what happened, and ask for their recommendation of what dealership to take her to. I have places to go! I also want a good outfit, and there are some pretty bad ones in our area. Does this sound like a plan? Oh, and here is the hole plus cracks, as seen in a mirror. The hole is in the lower engine case, and the cracks extend up and in to the upper case.     I appreciate all the information, I really do. It's causes palpitations to consider that it may not be a warranty repair. If that is the reality, then it is the reality. Dave

    About 90 miles into the ride back to Houston from the Rockport Maintenance Day, Roxie suffered a catastrophic failure. I heard a loud clunk and felt her die. I pulled the clutch, and emergency stopped on the right shoulder. That was kind of exciting, as Dave P./Just Foolin' Around and I were passing cars and fellow VentureRiders. I turned off the power as Roxie spilled out oil. In fact, I'd left a long trail of oil as I made it to the shoulder. I am thankful for my friends, who came to a stop, and who u-turned to come back for me. We had quite a party there on the freeway shoulder. Kreg/Kbay went and got his trailer, and returned to carry me home. It seems to me that she'd thrown a rod. At least that's what we called it when I turned wrenches in High School. I'm not sure what they call it now, or even if that is accurate on a second gen engine. It looks like she lost most of her oil, and there was coolant in the puddle as well. The oil seems to have come out above the front motor mount. My warranty expires in April, and I am glad it happened now, and when surrounded by friends. Is there any way this is not covered by the warranty? I certainly have not heard of a well-maintained Venture engine dying like this. I only have 55,000 miles on her.     Adding a USB -- thread Installing a Powerlet Outlet -- thread, tangentially discussed. DIY Powerlet-to-USB Adapter -- I found it very useful. I bought a NAPA USB cord, you can find them at auto parts stores. Good luck! Dave

    It will be a touring bike and it will have more than two cylinders. I like the tech in a BMW, but a Gold Wing is probably more approachable.

    Mine had a peg on the outside of the spring that mated with a hole in the axle to ensure alignment. Not sure how it would flip? Glad you are posting pics.     LOL. I can just scoot halfway across the country on one highway: I-10. I'll be warm here by March. But I am planning to turn and go up to Savannah and Atlanta before heading home. Could be cooler there, I suppose. The comments I noted were about loss of signal... the "OK" message not getting out. But it seems like almost all the comments like that were from hikers who possibly did not mount their unit right. I have the RAM Mount for my GPSMap 60CSx, and plan to get one for the SPOT when I get it. However, this new SPOT is shaped differently... I wonder how long before they make one that fits? Is the top edge supposed to be up, or the face? I was thinking of getting a powered tank bag, and putting the spot in the map window. If it is laying flat, will that work OK? And I wonder if I have my phone next to it, if that will cause too much noise for both of them? Dave

    Are you an IBA Premier member? Are you going to the Daytona 2011 meeting? I'm thinking I'll ride there, then collect some more states for my ride map. I don't have vacation time to attend the group rides. Yes, my primary interest is to let my family know where I am. But the safety feature can't be discounted. The reviews on REI were quite poor of the SPOT II, but its way better than nothing. Dave
