  1. I know some people to be added to the "Users List". Drupal Misery. Dave
  2. The "count up timer" is your only indication. There is no "idiot light". I get the count up starting at 114 miles, and have achieved 150 miles. I rarely look for gas until the count up is at 25 miles. I've found that if I can keep under 70, I get much better fuel economy. I keep it in 4th gear and it just hums. Above 70 and the windshield drag becomes a burden. Hmmm, I've also vented the filler neck so that I can get a truly full tank. Good luck! 3. As an alternate approach, does the emailed text get reset as well? I don't mind having a 4 day notice, but it would be nice to know that it is short. Is it possible to have the text say, This is a notice that your membership will lapse in 3 days... (an extra grace day). If you set the text, will it stick after upgrades? Then your work is over, and the goal of setting a fire under the member is accomplished. Dave
  4. My experience echoes dmoff1698's. I got the notice less than a week before the deadline (4/14, and it expired 4/18). I checked when that would be, and put it off for a few extra days to let my mad money account recharge. I forgot to renew before I left for the weekend, and suffered the consequences when I got back. No big deal, but it really was a short fuse. Dave
  5. It took about a month to make that decision. Actual repairs have taken almost two months. Good news of a sort: I called and they said all the parts had arrived. They are presently reassembling ("it is on the bench now"), but the man I spoke to had no estimate of how long that would take. I could call and talk to the service manager (he was at lunch), but I have given over to a sense of fatalism. Dave
  6. Welcome to the forum. I hope you find it has enough value to splash out the whopping $12 to be a paid member. To answer your question, I don't have an answer. It is clearly a business decision, and Yamaha has their own practices. I have heard that Yamaha doesn't supply complete engines. (That was on the previous page of this discussion.) Your view would make sense from the manufacturer's perspective, but not from the dealer's. If I were a dealer, I would want to make $80/hour (or whatever) on 80 hours of labor rather than on 20 hours of labor. A complete engine goes in too quickly, requires less handling, etc. Too, if you get a markup on parts, why would you buy a complete package at a discount? I should point out that this is still being handled as a warranty repair. As such, I don't expect to pay anything. Thanks all for your well wishes. Dave
  7. I spoke with the dealer last week. They had the lower end reassembled, and discovered that a part they'd planned to reuse was actually damaged. They were waiting on the part to arrive; they thought it would come that day (Wednesday). After that, "it shouldn't take long... unless we need another part." This Friday marks the three month anniversary of Roxie throwing a rod. Dave
  8. I'm always surprised when someone advocates theft. If someone borrowed my bike because I've put plenty of miles on her, I might get upset. Or, maybe more accurately, if someone borrowed a rental car because Avis had already made plenty of money on it, I guess that's OK. I suppose someone can live with their own conscience, but it's a bit mystifying when someone advocates illegal acts. I might drink a half bottle of Gentleman Jack at a bike stop, but I don't suppose I ought to urge others to do so. Perhaps it's just me and my fuddy duddy upbringing. Dave
  9. As you please. I too am not in favor of joining in order to flog a product. As it stands now, the post bears an uncanny resemblance to spam email. For others, a similar product is the Diamond R Passenger Highway Pegs. I bought them and was satisfied with the look and workmanship. However, it didn't fit my wife's need so I sold them to a fellow VR member. His passenger loves them. I liked how they enhanced the stock floorboards; the Kurakyn boards don't match the Venture look, to me. Dave
  10. Does this thread plus this thread answer your question? Regarding the cruise control, press SET followed immediately by ACC to set the speed instantly, no delay. You can tell by looking at the fluids if they need replacement. Dark == replace, just like on any other bike. I would do a carb sync to make sure the engine is running smoothly. That is probably the fastest way to gain a smoother and more powerful ride. Please note that the service manual procedure is incorrect, so follow the link instead. Like mentioned before, many of us use the Carbon_One freestanding lift adapter. If you just want to lift the bike, blocks of 2x4s or hockey pucks can be used to make sure the lift touches the frame before the hanging engine. Dave
  11. Ha ha! Good point. It looks like my bike might be done next Tuesday, which is 4/5. My warranty expires 4/6. Coincidence? Dave
  12. What an auspicious posting! You see, today is exactly two months since I walked into the dealership. I had been told a month ago that they had the OK from Yamaha to repair Roxie. The dealer at that time said it would be 3-4 weeks. Last week, I asked for an update, since it had been 3 weeks. I was told that they had the cases and crankshaft and rods in and measured for all the bearings. The bearings were on order, and should arrive "next Tuesday," that is, tomorrow. After that, they reckon it will take a week to assemble Roxie. Unless they need more parts. So, the new, updated best case estimate is next Tuesday. With luck, I'll be able to ride to the Leakey meetup on Tax Day. At this point, I'll believe it when I see it. Dave
  13. The RSV manual generally works, but there is an 87 page RSTD supplement. It covers the differences between the RSTD and RSV (headlamp, windscreen, seats, wiring). Then you use the RSV manual for everything else. I bought mine on eBay as a PDF, that I downloaded and then printed. Here is something similar: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260756447290 However, this looks like a CD, and I bought mine as a downloadable series of files. Good luck! Dave
  14. Glad you made it out of there alive. That is the rest area on the Devil's Backbone. It's one of the most haunted places in America. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tff8-AmiXY]YouTube - Unsolved Mysteries-Devil's Backbone[/ame]
  15. Thank you for joining. May I also suggest that you alter your "Bike Year and Model" via your User CP (left hand margin) and then "Edit your details" (left hand margin). If you put your "1986 Venture Royale" there, then people will now know at a glance what you ride. Some may praise you while others may tease you in fun and fellowship. But then, we'll all know how best to help you at any given time. Now, back to the topic at hand, where I am no help at all. Good luck! Dave
  16. Well done! That is quite an achievement, and a great write up. :happy65:I think you should submit it to the IBA Premier magazine, assuming you desire that level of membership. And how about that bike you restored? What a champ. Again, well done! Have you received your IBA certificate yet? I wonder if they gave you grief for turning without corner receipts, or if you got corner receipts? I chose to drive a straight line route because I feared a corner hassle. Dave IBA #39330
  17. If you do it late at night during a wet t-shirt contest, you might survive.
  18. They are called the Switchblade footpegs. Dave
  19. A more direct replacement is the Royal Star Tour Deluxe, essentially a Venture in cruiser trim. It is exceedingly comfortable, with the same smooth engine and long wheelbase. I'm not sure how much you plan on riding per day, but my wife doesn't mind 500+ mile days. You do lose out on the trunk, if you count that as a loss, and the queen seat, which is debatable. On the other hand, you get a huge windscreen that keeps you dry even if you ride all day in the rain. Plus, the RSTD is faster and prettier. She does get a little "sail-sy" at 100+mph, but 80mph cruising hasn't really resulted in buffeting. Dave
  20. Oh sure! Just throw your fancy trunk in the face of us RSTD drivers. We'll just have to be content with being faster.
  21. I will typically push it on trips. I fly my wife to the destination and fly to meet her. Getting to and from Utah/AZ/NM, you can achieve 900 mile days. The last day of my trip to Michigan, I went 927 miles in 16 hours, averaging almost 58mph. That was a long, hard day. So yes, you can do it. Last year, I went 3500 miles to those same destinations last summer, riding two up. I spent 8 days. Our hardest two days were coming home. We went 438 miles in 9 hours, and finished the trip going 624 miles in 11.5 hours. Only on this last day did we approach an average of 55 mph, mostly because the speed limit was 80mph. While in the area, we went about 300 miles on average. We relaxed and enjoyed the stunning scenery! If you want, you can look at my Flickr set of the trip to Monument Valley, Zion NP, etc. There are some MUST SEE locations, some of which you may not know about. Have fun on your route planning!
  22. Some people fear dropping their bike and want the pegs to go up. Others have been influenced by F4U Corsairs, and their folding wings. I fold them up because that's where I put my helmet when I am parked. My highway pegs... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3640/3488470379_074ea7a607.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3637/3491476894_c56e88780a.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3541/3491477368_2ddbd60646.jpg
  23. Do you know when the warranty expires? The reason I ask is that the brake lines might be getting brittle. The warranty expiry gives a clue as to how old the bike is, maintenance-wise. Mine expires 4/6, so on that date she'll be 5 years old. I am a bit confused at the 15K service, because there isn't one scheduled for that. Or for 17K. Maybe it was a time threshold that had elapsed. *shrug* Have fun at your maintenance day. I'd come up, but I am in Michigan the end of April. Dave
  24. I don't know if you have the service manual, but here is the maintenance schedule for the RSTD. You need spark plugs, coolant, greases, and oils. You'll note that the service schedule is mileage AND time based. When I bought my 2006 RSTD, it had 2002 miles on it. However, it was over 2 years old. To get current required me to do the 24 month service. You might think about that, and whether you want to tackle the 30 month service as well. That would add the fuel filter, and perhaps even the brake hoses if you think your bike is over 4 years old. Just some thoughts. Dave
  25. Seems like you have two variables in this: new oil and new level. I believe your oil level is correct, but you can eliminate that as a variable by overfilling it like you have. (I mean, to the top of the sight glass) If the whining doesn't go away, then you have at least eliminated one variable. Dave
