  1. I am interested, in fact I'm interested in the whole thing minus a CMU or even the other meters. I have an idea that I would like to work on that needs the dash cluster.
  2. A venture with straight pipes makes every Harley made sound like a little wimpy moped. At the Muskegon Bike, Time someone had a blue one with straight pipes, 4 of them. and it put every harley to shame in noise level and mean-ness sound.
  3. My local yamaha dealer will increase the full retail by 10% if you dare to ask them to price match, they are HORRIBLE to deal with. Plus their expert techs cant even put a front wheel on right, it was rubbing HARD on the caliper and they did not see what was wrong. Refused to fix it, so I fixed it in the parking lot and told everyone walking by that I was fixing what their expert did. Babbits in Muskegon,mi don't deal with them. Really bad management, really bad service department. I drive 40 miles out of my way to not deal with them.
  4. I suggest also swapping out the regulator and Stator for upgrades. i used the Regulator from a FJR1300 and a Ricks Motorsports hot Shot. The Regulator on the ventures is a old design that puts a 100% load on the stator at all times. the newer type from the FJR's does not. coupled with a hot shot stator you will eliminate any future charging problems or power problems. Certainly open up the top and check the valves, I would also pull the pumpkin and lube the spines on the shaft drive, I'll bet that was never done. You also might be really lucky and a can of seafoam in the tank and let to sit in the carbs will clear everything up. but I'll bet the carb diaphragms need replacement. These bikes will run on 3 cylinders perfectly. They also run on two surprisingly well. I limped my 83 home running only on 2 when I was 60 miles from home. The ECM will corrode around the diodes and cause a failure.
  5. I hope you did not pass up a perfect running 87 for a 88 that probably needs a valve shim job and a carb rebuild. It sounds like you need at least new diaphragms for the carbs, that 's $100.00 for 4 pieces of thin rubber. plus a couple of hours to install them. Then you need to sync the carbs and hopefully that will solve the problems. I would also have the valves adjusted if the Previous owner cant remember when he last had them done. You could have exhaust or intake valves not closing all the way which would also cause that same problem. if you are handy, only a couple hundred in parts and it's good as new IF nothing serious is wrong. did you get a really good deal on it?
  6. How much do you need for a instrument cluster? always good to have parts on hand when I open things up for repair.
  7. Ok what would cause the Odometer to work perfect but the speedo stay at 0? Is there a fix or do I need to find a used speedo and try to get the odo set to the right numbers?
  8. Yup club membership to me has no value. I have been asked to join several. I always respond with, "are there any rules I must follow? If so, I'm not interested." Mostly because 99% of any groups rules are not the normal common sense rules, like help your brother riders, don't be a jerk, etc... but things to make people do what someone else wants. We must wear blue on tuesdays, only harley branded clothing, Black socks only... you know the really stupid rules that are only put there for controlling others. There are plenty of guys I can ride with that dont care what I ride or what I wear. Those are the ones I want to ride with.
  9. All Wheel drive plus lower "offroad" gearing is what you paid for. that CRV is getting phenomenal gas mileage for a off road 4X4. If you drive mostly highway, you should have bought a civic or prelude. I can out drive 4X4 SUV's in my civic on heavy snow roads. Mostly because I ride on snow tires in the winter. And I get far more snow here in michigan than they do in the rockies... Typical 48" of snowfall in January. Not uncommon to wake up to 1-2 feet of fresh on the ground. I will drive 40 miles into work and beat all the other guys that have 4WD trucks.
  10. Very glad he is recovering well, Hope you heal up fast Larry!
  11. More top heavy than a 1st gen? I though the 1st gen was the most top heavy bike out there. I dont think I like that. It's the one thing about my venture I dislike, get it more than 5 degrees off center while stopped and you have to fight to get it back up before it falls tot he ground.
  12. Anyone here come from a 1st gen and then bought a BMW K1200LT Touring bike? I am playing with the idea as you can get them cheap with low miles compared to the Goldwings, plus they are physically smaller. I am eyeballing a 2001 with 20K miles on it for $6500. Do they ride like the 1st gen? I am just looking at about $3500-$4000 to make my 83 100% reliable and fixing 2nd gear as well as forks, etc... and only a little bit more will get me a bike that shops will actually touch, you can actually get parts for, and I will feel comfortable taking on a 1500 mile ride without worrying where the Uhaul rental centers are to get back home. Second Gen is out as I dont like the harley style bikes. They are pretty, just not my style and I dont like forward controls. And I dont have $12,000 for a 10 year old goldwing.
  13. did you replace them anyways? I used the new sealed type so I will never ever have to do it again.
  14. Honestly if you are looking at buying an 83-85 Venture, take about $1500-$2000 off the asking price from the seller. Flat out tell them, "these have bad transmissions, I'll offer you $1500-$2000 less" If they wont budge, go elsewhere if they cant prove the tranny was fixed. It will actually cost you about $2500 to get it fixed IF you can find the parts. They are not rare bikes, so just keep looking for an 86 or newer.
  15. do we have to have the collector? cant a bike shop weld up a pair of Y pipes and call it done?
  16. but they wont. More ST1300's are sold than FJR's and the Kawasaki Concours 14 is better than those two as well. Yamaha is completely ignoring the touring segment where the people with money spend. the sportbikes are mostly ridden by kids that have never seen a $1000 bill in their life let alone even have a pair of 20's in their pocket, yet Yamaha seems to chase the low end cheap sportbikes more than any other segment. I have ridden Yamaha most of my life, but I'm looking at the Triumph and the BMW's now. the ST is not good for the pillon rider and the queen demands comfort. and I just dont have a 3 car garage to hold my sportscar and a goldwing.
  17. http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/bikes/triumph-trophy-se/ This. I have never been a fan of the Harley clone, Nice bikes but not my style. The problem is Yamaha has missed the boat badly. the fjr1300 is not a sport/touring bike. It's a sportbike that has bags. On the same note, I dont want a full size car that the Goldwing has become. I want a bike that can fit in a garage easily next to the car, is comfortable for 1000 mile rides and is comfortable for the wife on the back. BMW can do it with the 1200LT and triumph promises the same thing.
  18. About as much as I will pay for a 2013 Triumph Trophy. It needs to be less of a Harley clone and more of a sport/touring like a BMW K1200LT or a Trophy.
  19. Nope, I started to trace things out, but then a new job came along that takes all my spare time. In fact I will be getting rid of my stock radio and installing either aftermarket or a setup from a 2nd gen. I have replaced the switches twice in my radio and intercom control. it's impossible to keep water out of these due to a major design flaw in not having a water drain channel.
  20. Padding the seat to make you sit higher will be more comfortable in the long run. I added not only more foam but a "gel" insert and it made the seat taller by an inch and a whole lot more comfortable on longer rides. You want comfort? do the seat not the pegs.
  21. "WoW no more kids in the home.. Umm what will I do ? " Turn their room into an office and place to store motorcycle stuff. The now lonely spot in the driveway where their car always was, that needs to be filled with another motorcycle. Get one fast before they come back!
  22. I buy stock type WIX filters for $4.95 from rock auto they come with both o rings in the box with each new filter. I'd love a spin on adapter, but I can buy enough stock filters to outlive the bike for the price of the spin on adapter. Why guys think that thing is worth $80.00 I cant understand. Plus I worry about the spin on oil filters causing problems. if they have an anti-flowback valve they wont open with the very low oil pressures our bikes run at.
  23. Oh I like that idea! I need to see if I can find a thin one that is not bright Red.
  24. Not on my bike, I'm generating 14.5 volts at idle I have a hot shot stator and a FJR R&R. I'm charging if the fan is on, high beam is on, passing lights on and the stereo cranked at idle. I hit stop and go traffic a lot and on really hot days, I'd rather the fan kick on and stay on while I am creeping instead of what it does now and runs for 60 seconds, then off for 2 minutes, then run for 60 seconds.... That way it's not used for extended periods of time, only when the bike is not moving in stop and go traffic. The bike already has a speed sensor on it, It's what all Ventures use to shut off the turn signal for us. I think it's the White-Green wire it switches or pulses to ground, The cancel circuit will trip for time or speed. At least that is how it's supposed to work. That is what I read in the service manual... Maybe it's distance, which will also work as it will turn off the override as soon as I move the bike, Even creeping at 10 mph the bike will stay cool, it's only when it's 120 out and I am stopped in traffic when I feel it needs more cooling. EDIT: Ok I misread, It seems the sensor goes to ground when it senses the bike moving for turn signal cancel, that's easy enough to rewire the reset relay to use ground instead. Perfect! I'll post a schematic of how to wire such an animal!
  25. I want to add a single pushbutton that will override the fan sensor and run the cooling fan, but then reset when I start moving. I know how to wire up 3 relays to do a latch on fron a single press of a button and use a 12V trigger to reset it. I figure I can use the Turn signal cancel signal that will cancel the turn signals when you go above 25mph to reset my fan override. Does anyone know where that signal comes from and if it is 12 volts?
