Hard starting after 6 weeks
timgray replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
plugs are new 3 months ago, i'll change anyways.. Should I drain the old stabil treated gas and refill with gas and seafoam then? I want to make sure I dont have gummed carbs come spring. -
Prep Luggage for painting
timgray posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am repainting my 83 this winter. In the process of prepping, I'm stripping everything off the painted parts for a color change. I drilled out the rivets to seperate the trunk and saddlebags into halves and got everything off them except for the aluminum sealing trim. I really want this off for the painting so that the final job looks it's best. I removed all screws and drilled out every rivet yet I still cant get this stuff to release fro mthe plastic trunk and saddlebag halves. any tricks to removing this without breaking the trunk or scraping up the aluminum trim/seal track? -
Hard starting after 6 weeks

I'm just worried because it feels like the carbs are gumming up. if you even touch the throttle it dies like the main jets are plugged. I have to let it idle at 2000 rpm until it let's very warm before it will idle. and even then it takes it another 15-20 minutes before it will allow me to give it any throttle without dying. Before the snow flew I was riding her in 35 degree weather and she did not start this bad. She started right up and after a 5 minute warm was ready for a ride... but after sitting only a short 6 weeks it feels like the carbs gummed up. Should I add even more stabil? I added what they reccomended on the bottle. -
I put the bike in storage about 6 weeks ago. I went to the storage this weekend to check the battery tender and start her up... I had to crank it a lot to get her to start and then I had to let her warm up a lot before she would respond to the throttle without sputtering and dying. Normally I just touch the start and she fires up and roars to life without a problem. any idea what is causing this? I dont want her to need major work in the spring. I did add stabil to the gas prior to storage and rode about 20 miles to get the fresh gas+stabil into the carbs.

I know there are som ham radio operators here, how many of you have sucessfully mounted your gear to the bike? What mobile radios work well for on the road DX'ing? or even good old 2meter chatter? also what brands do you use for an antenna and how did you mount it? It seems that Diamond does not make any of their no ground plane antennas for 10 meters or 6 meters anymore... what do you use?

I did some computer work for a local business and friend. I saved him so much money he is offering to paint my bike for free using House of Kolor paint, I can do candy or anything in their paint line. Anyone know of what colors look best on a 1st gen? I think it needs to stay a "classy" color and stay away from neon lime green crotch rocket or other sporty colors. anyone know of what colors look really good? does the bike look good with a metallic black or any of the dark colors or should I stick to something brighter?

HID upgrade kits for 1st gen?
timgray replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm wondering what would need to be done to fool the information computer to think the high and low beams were ok because it looks like you would have to gut the entire lighting circuit and remove the Reserve lighting module completely from the setup. Glad to hear it's a good upgrade. I'll order a kits and upgrade mine while the fairing is completely off for painting. Hopefully I'll remember to take photos so I can write up a kind of "how-to" -
Most 83 to early 85 ventures will have the 2nd gear fail due to a design flaw in the transmission. It costs $2000-$2500 here in the USA to get 2nd gear fixed. easiest way to tell is to ride the bike and get on it HARD in second. if it skips like the clutch is going, second gear is going bad. 60Km is not many miles and if 2nd gear has been babied it may not manifest a problem for you.

Anyone tried the 9003/H4 HID kits that are all over Ebay for cars? Instead of burning a 55W bulb you're burning a 35W HID lamp that gives you a lot more light with a 20W savings. I also wonder if the computer will freak out or would you have to remove the Reserved lighting unit and other wiring and simply wire it to the handlebar switch and call it done. any ideas? a single Ebay kit would upgrade 2 bikes. You can also get bike specific types that have a HIGH/LOW beam.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BI-XENON-HID-CONVERSION-KIT-H4-3-For-Motorcycle-Bike_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ36476QQihZ020QQitemZ300260708063QQtcZphoto for example.

my hjc SL-MAX and my wifes SY-MAX do very well at not fogging I can close it down at highway speeds and only use the chin vent, when around city I simply crack it to the first notch which leaves a 1/8th inch gap opening on the shield and that works great for around town. If I removed the windshield, I'd have enough airflow at city speeds to clear the shield with just the vent.... but that pesky windshield on our bikes cuts down airflow under 50mph.

They no longer sell them. All they carry is the 4 mechanical meter ones that are identical to the one you can get from jcwhitney.

Bike is in storage. I want to take all the plastic off so I can spend time in my basement fixing all cracks and broken tabs to repaint it in the spring. IS there any guides to disassembly of the front faring outer shell or anything I should pay attention to or watch out for when I do it?

mounting that would not be a problem the problem is that it's 5.5 inches wide, 4 inches long and a full 1 inch deep without any remote control capability. It's huge.

1st gen gas tank "rack" chrome.
timgray replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Would this work? http://www.wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/3457_GL1100_Accessory_Chrome_Tank_Rack or is the goldwing wider than the venture and that would look wrong? -

1983. my crash bars are in perfect shape, I'm looking for the chrome dress up that goes around the trunk on the royale. it's like a wrap around set of thin (1/4 inch) chrome bars that I believe mount to the trunk. -
light reflector
timgray replied to TxVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Actually proper LED tail lights are far brighter than any bulb. Problem is you gotta spend $25.00 to $40.00 each to get them. superbrightleds.com has a 5 watt unit that will absolutely beat any 1157 bulb in brightness and is not directional (BA15 5-Watt LED 15mm Bayonet Base Bulbs) In fact I have a set of their LED's in my bikes fog lights. Dropped the wattage draw on the bikes electrical system from 70 watts to 10 and I get people complaining about how bright they are. I have a full set, but I have to replace my blinker modules and wire up a system to fool the lamp out indicators on my bike before I can use them. I use them in my car and it's like I turn on red fog lights to the rear when I hit the brakes. Note, the really low grade LED bulbs have separate little led's and are directional ,but those are not the real stuff, do not ever buy those for anything but show or indicator or marker lamps. the little 196, 4 led bulbs work well for markers. Finally, to make the tail light brighter, I'd paint the "reflector" part inside with chrome paint or for a more even light a bright white. the dingy grey that my 83 has as the inside reflector certianly is not making full use of the light. -
WANT TO TALK TO ANOTHER BIKE w/o AUDIO
timgray replied to TESchoener's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Get the midland GMRS radios and their helmet mic setups. Less than $90.00 for a 2 bike setup. It's incredibly popular in the bike clubs around here. In fact most riders dont use CB at all for all the noise and chatter of other people. so they all switched to FRS as it's cheaper and easier for all members to get. -

Have any of the trim pieces specific to the early royale? like the tank cover rack, the rear trunk wrap around lower chrome tubing? -
I noticed that some members bikes have a rack on the "gas tank" cover that actually covers the battery and air cleaner a little chrome rach that is similar to that on the trunk. Is that an aftermarket item or is it a part of the royale trim out package? I'd like to add one to my bike to make a tank bag easier to attach.

Anyone know if this project died? I'm still looking for a hitch for my 83 non royale.

I think my reserve lighting unit went bad. I cleaned the handlebar switch and checked all I can and I still have a dead low beam. Yes the bulb is good. The REserve lighting unit is the only thing I have not replaced. Anyone know if the YAMAHA reserve lighting unit that was used on other bikes is the same thing? Ebay is full of RLU's from other yamaha bikes and was wondering if any of those will work.

simply remove them and replace them with high brightness LED 161 bulbs. You can get them at any auto place for insane prices, or on ebay from china sellers for a decent price but 6 week shipping time. I found 1Watt LED 194 (same as the 161 but a little larger) bulbs for my car side markers that are so bright they annoy people and light up the road to the sides of the car. Those around the back of the bike will make you look like a UFO. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2pcs-158-168-194-W5W-1W-High-Power-LED-Red-Wedge-Bulb_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1419Q7c39Q3a1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem370096959753QQitemZ370096959753 for example. I dont know if those are physically too large to fit, but it is the same base style and size. if you have a red lens get red led's it makes it a really really red light. the whire ones behind a red lens looks a bit off color to me.

Being on a motorcycle, I am glad if my headlight is too bright. if I annoy them then I know they can see me. too many blind cagers will gladly plow into you and use the "I did not see them" excuse. I prefer blinded cagers to dead riders any day.
