  1. Yes you can buy new ones. They are insanely priced though. my local stealer has them for $235.00 each. I still cant find any for sane prices elsewhere. What I have will last another set of pads. but I guess I need to start searching for another set.
  2. I cut 2 pieces of aluminum a bit bigger than the license plate and mounted my own led lights Cost me $18.95 plus 2 hours drilling, soldering and epoxied it all together. Did not want blinkers just a blind the driver bright red on the sides of the plate. what these companies charge for basically the same thing is criminal.
  3. Who was the ebay seller you got them from? also did you do the "upgrade" to the washer to improve gas mileage as posted in the other threads?
  4. Lifetime sub does not mean YOUR lifetime. I have a friend that lost his because his radio died and he went past his 4 MAX radio changes ($50.00 a pop charge per radio change) No refunds, it's never a good idea to get a lifetime sub from any place. I lost out on a "lifetime" subscription to TiVo when my 1st gen tivo died.
  5. I looked at it but decided to go with a silverstar again instead. I did not want to take the time to build the circuit to fool the computer so it wont be blinking the red light at me. I also found a HID upgrade that moves the lamp in and out to switch between high/low beam, but the same issue as above and that I discovered that running HID lights all the time causes them to burn out.
  6. I heard here that you can rehab the brake rotors by taking a sander to them. does anyone have and instructions about this? do I use a drill mounted sander and try to get the sanding marks all the same way? do I use an orbital and just rough everything up? They look grooved but when you touch them they feel smoother than they look. do I just leave them be?
  7. Sweet Thanks guys! Trying to get everything ordered before the Wife's severance pay runs out.
  8. I'm placing an order at oldbikebarn and cant find the right progressive front spring number. anyone have the right number for the progressive front fork springs for a 83 venture?
  9. There is one fact with RAP music loving people. they absolutely HATE country music. nothing better than to simply crank up the twangy, "my dog ran away with my favorite pickup truck" kind of music and watch them try to get away from it as fast as possible.
  10. I bought a low quality car stereo and a $19.95 marine stereo pod for mine. No sense in wasting $250.00 on a high end marine radio that will get destroyed as fast as a $99.00 Cheap JVC radio. find some 3/8" or thicker black textured ABS plastic or glue sheets together to make it that thick and cut it to fit over the left side fairing pocket. Remove the pocket before this. Or if you want to get fancy, cut a foam buck to look the way you want and fiberglass up a nice mold to hold a stereo for you if you can do fiberglass. If you have the dash speaker pods there, replace the junky stock speakers with some rubber surround coaxial cheap car speakers. I found that JVC has a pair of 4" speakers that sell for $14.95 that sound fantastic, my 83 has 4" speaker openings in it, check yours before buying. I added foam back baffles to keep moisture out. I'm building some speaker pods to put a set of 4" speakers off the trunk so I can have 4 speakers like the newer goldwings. Remember it's gonna sound kind of tinny. you cant get BASS from a motorcycle stereo unless you strap a subwoofer to the back seat. that IF you really gotta have FM radio. if all you will listen to is XM/Sirius or Ipod then get a amplifier with a remote volume and wire in a headphone cord to plug into the device you will use and get one of these below to control volume. add a switch to turn it on or off. http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detail.cfm?model_ID=0&Category_ID=50&manufacturer_ID=540&product_ID=24312&sblid_name=Cycle_Sounds_Volume_Control_for___Wheel_Tunes_Cycle_Sounds_Systems I have the car stereo in mine, but will be switching to a small car stereo amp (100Watts is way more than enough, try to find a tiny 35 watt) because I never use the FM radio anymore. I listen to Sirius or an Mp3 player. My sirius is a "radar dector" type (Xact Visor) radio that velcroes to the top of the Instrument pod. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_098CO3002/Orion-Cobalt-CO300-2.html?tp=115 click the link above for a decent small amp. Even that one is way too much for a motorcycle.
  11. I used to have to pull up on the pedal as well until I fixed the problem in the pedal linkage. You need to disassemble the brake pedal and separate where it connects to the master cyl. I drove the shaft out of the frame where it goes through, sanded it smooth, cleaned out the bushing where it went through and then reassembled (take the pipes off to make this easier) now the brake pedal moves like it is on new bearings, and I could not lift on the pedal if I wanted to it's resting point is all the way up. This eliminated a lot of my brake problems. There was junk in the bearing sleeve where the brake pedal shaft goes through the frame causing it to bind up and not return to the top like it is supposed to. I can take pictures tonight to better explain it.
  12. Step 1 - REMOVE admin privileges from her and a lot of that will stop. Step 2 - disallow all attachments from email. if it's not in a ZIP format it's deleted on the email server. These two things made the biggest difference in a office of 300 users. Switching to a good Antivirus like NOD32 solved everything else, infection free for 2 years now. WE have not had a problem here since we got rid of the "popular" anti virus programs that really dont do anything.
  13. silicone over spray on the rotor will also do this. Never EVER put tire dressing on a motorcycle tire. that stuff stays on the rotors and get in the pads causing all kinds of problems. Had to disassemble everything, sand and brake cleaner soak the rotors and then replace the like new pads to get rid of my silicone contamination I had on my discs that caused such a problem. That was the last time I ever used tire dressing on a bike tire sidewall.
  14. I dont have a royale 1st gen. but I want to add a PTT button to transmit on the FRS radios my riding club like over the CB. many guys have bought one and they install over the left controls and the big box hangs over and feels flimsy... Not impressive for the $125.00 they paid for it from autocom. The one I have is a big fat rubber one that velcros on but feels uncomfortable. Anyone have a good one they installed on their bike? I'm looking at using a chatterbox CB-50 intercom and it has a mic out and speaker in that works with most radios and cellphones. The Midland setup I have now works but is not comfortable to use nor does it use the bikes power so a 3 hour ride has 1 and a half hours of no communication due to dead batteries.
  15. store.apple.com is the easiest. amazon.com has some as well. Mac Mini is what you are looking for, the low end model is more than enough for most people who are NOT doing HDTV video editing, engineering, or other high end applications. The mac mini will do regular video editing quite nice with iMovie (it comes on it for free) They work very well and use your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse so you dont have to buy new ones. Although the MAC mouse and keyboard are 300 times better than any dell or hp keyboard. they are actually made of aluminum and high grade polycarbonate instead of abs plastic.
  16. My recommendation is a MAC as well, unless you are married to a specific software program that is really obscure. Otherwise whatever you want on a PC can be found on a mac. either by the same name or under a different name. And if you have a program you MUST HAVE, you can get vmware and run windows on the mac to run that specific game. I can run all programs from windows And OSX on my mac. I do not have to worry about my computer getting messed up or slowing down (the windows install you can "revert" with a single click to a fresh clean Windows) plus the kids cant mess it up. If you do not want to waste time taking care of the computer get a MAC. if you like wasting an afternoon every week or month cleaning it stay with windows. You can get a MAC Mini for cheap, and unless you are into the heavy guts spurting 3d games that need a $500.00 video card, it will do everything you will want it to do. I'm a 25 years experienced Windows expert and IT professional, and I have MAC at home so I dont haveto do IT support when I come home from work. They cost more, but are worth it not having to mess around with them. Also the external hard drive as an automatic backup with the built in time machine is incredible. even if my wifes mac were to burst into flames we will not lose any photos or files.
  17. I took all my locks apart carefully and cleaned and lubed up everything. Now they all work like they are new. The problem is that none of them have a good seal on the keyhole flap so road junk and water get's in there to make them not work. Try spraying inside the key hole with lock lube and then spray at the wedge on the lock and see if you can while turning the key use a screwdriver to make it move to get it off so you can clean and relube them.
  18. I really dont want to remove the tank to do it, but I am sure that the lower part of the tank is full of junk from the last 25 years of it's life. I only had the bike for a year now but I have never opened the reserve valve and dont want to if there is junk in there. And good tips on how to clean all that out and drain it to a bucket? also where is the fuel filter? I cant find it.
  19. Does anyone know if the procedure is different for an 83? I know the 83 is a wierd animal in some aspects compared to the other 1st gens. I just might have to do this this spring at the end of my reassembly and tune up. I've been getting 32 on a good day, and 27 when I make kids on Ninjas cry.
  20. That's typical for car repairs. I just had 4 rubber bushings replaced on my wife's car. 4 little rubber bushings that cost less than $35.00 each. The bill came to $690.00 for the 4 hours labor and front end alignment. The manager did not think it was funny when I asked, "did you feed the guys lobster for lunch on my bill as well?"
  21. That is very good to know. I heard from several mechanics that "synthetic" is a scam and that most are no longer synthetic. They must have been referring to castrol.
  22. You are correct. not CAR oil but Diesel Truck oil. I use mobil 1 for trucks that do not have the "energy saving" junk in it. 15W40.. works great even with a wet clutch. Remember Mobil 1 is not a real synthetic. i believe Amsoil is one of the only real synthetics you can buy, if they do not list exactly what it is the bottle and it's chemical makeup, it's a good sign it's not a synthetic. In 1999 the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the council of Better Business Bureau ruled in a debate of what is "synthetic". Mobil challenged Castrol's replacement of polyalphaolefins (PAO's) with hydroisomerized waxes in their synthetic formulations. The Bureau ruled in Castrols favor and allowed them to call this hydroisomerized processed petroleum oil a synthetic. Now every major oil company is doing the same thing. The NAD ruled that synthetic was just a marketing term since there was no true definition of what synthetic is. Since then many oil companies have replaced their true Synthetics with this highly refined petroleum oil instead of the more expensive True Synthetic PAO's. These new highly refined petroleum oils are better in quality and performance than the cheaper refined oils, but only come close in some parameters to a True synthetic oil and are cheaper to manufacture. SO your synthetic oil has a very high chance of not really being a synthetic. I still use Mobil1 though. It's cheaper, makes my transmission quieter, and I dont feel bad changing it every 2000 miles. I also use only Wix filters. Simply because I get them for $4.00 each at rockauto.com and they come with the o rings. My Stealer charges me $14.95 for the filter, $10.00 for the 0 rings and claims I'll destroy my bike if I dont use his $8.95 a quart yamalube. Simply look around for the real prices. I'm betting my yamaha dealer get's his filters from yamaha for about what I am paying for Wix.
  23. Actually that's a bit over the top. wireless does not travel far un assisted. if you have at least 100 feet to the neighbors you can leave it wide open, they would have to be standing in your lawn to get a signal. If you want to check, wander around your yard with the laptop looking at signal strength. Brick homes eat up the signal faster than the fake brick we have now. Also the security is there to keep kids and freeloader neighbors out. It cant keep out a determined person. set it for WEP with a key and call it good if you're paraniod. Finally, even living miles from anyone will not keep it safe. I can pull in a wireless signal and get internet from 5 miles away using the old 3' satellite dish setup I built. works great camping. I set it up and point it at the campground clubhose that has free internet, and now I have internet at the campsite. I have been able to grab the clubhouse signal from nearly 2 miles through trees. But then I'm considered one of those determined experts I warned about earlier. I used to beam free internet to a neighbor across the lake with the Dish setup back 8 years ago. Basically, if you live with people on top of you (the tiny city lots) get it set up for security. if you live in the country or have a large lot, dont sweat it.
  24. speedo can come off the transmission final drive. These can be gear driven, chain or even belt. There was a showcar in detroit that had all 4 wheels "hubless" like that, but it was an electric car.
  25. Not much. I believe you have a MAX of 20 amps to work with and over 1/2 that is already used by the bike. Many guys swap out the 55Watt bulbs to 35Watt bulbs in driving lights to make a lighter impact on the electrical system. I use 3Watt LED replacements I found online. They do not light up the road at all, but they are as bright as my headlight to oncoming traffic in day and night and make it impossible to not see me.
