  1. Like another 1st gen :-)
  2. There cant be that many different key cuts to these bikes. With all the spare parts laying around it would be nice to find a way to determine if someone's key will fit a helmet lock of luggage lock. They way many of us can get rid of the "I have 8 keys to my bike, no none are spares" syndrome we seem to have going. I've got actually 4 keys to my bike. Ign and it opens the helmets and luggage. and a separate key to remove each piece from the frame. I'd LOVE to have all keyed the same.
  3. I noticed that the MK-II Ventures dont have a keylock for the gas cap lid, just a thumb turn type instead of a key lock type. Does anyone have one of those keyless gas cap lid locks they are willing to sell? thanks.
  4. I believe that is a revision number of that module design.
  5. Mine does not have this noise, but I installed a decent choke+cap filter at the radio to begin with. I finally got a replacement amp chip (stole it out of a "dead" unit I got on ebay for $5.00) and have a fully working setup again. Most of the time noisy or bad volume control is due to water damaged pots. They are 10K audio taper pots, but are incredibly rare to find. they are a stacked type pot with switches. Very specalized back then, near impossible to find today. My only suggestion is to find a new volume control module on ebay, it's the fastest way to fix these unless you find a electronics place that has a stock of old parts from the 80's laying around. I have determined that I can in fact fix these things, but I need a donor, or a parts pile to pull from. I cant get anyone to send me any of their dead radio parts so it will be really tough to fix any dead radios. I'm scouring ebay to get 2 complete working sets, One to sit on a shelf, and one to install. If anyone needs any specific help and they have a parts radio to take apart for parts I can gladly help them, but getting replacement parts is near impossible from what I have discovered over the past 2 months. Again, if you have any dead 1st gen radio parts I am willing to buy them for scrap value and shipping. I'd love to get enough to offer a repair service. Oh, an update on using the cheap midland helmet headsets. It can work, but it takes about 1 hour of work and about another $15.00 in parts to make the adapter cable and you end up with a mono headset, they are wired mono in the midland cable and with really low grade wire. Far cheaper to buy one of the $65.00 goldwing headsets you see on ebay.
  6. you can get those magnets free out of a dead hard drive. They are under the head mechanism pivot.
  7. That makes a lot of sense. The radiator fan was running, so if at idle no power is generated and the fan kicks on then it will drop way down. I was mostly worried about how it was not coming back up when I revved it. I'll check all those connections.
  8. Check where the cushion fits the seat. That is where my leaks came from. I removed the backrest cushion and daubed a little silicone to all holes, then reassembled. No more leaks.
  9. I never got around to the higher power upgrade. Here's the wierd part. When idling it was about 12V, if I hit the brakes it would drop lower. then after idling for another 15-20 minutes it would simply ramp up to 14.5-15 volts and hang there for a while. When it was low, revving even to 3500 rpm will not bring up the voltage. I'm gonna tear apart the bike this week and check all the plugs and wires.
  10. After riding, well idling through steel horse alley at the Bike time Rally this weekend about 30 times, I noticed something. My volt gauge is bouncing from 12V to normal from time to time. when I get on the open road at 35+mph it seems fine at a full charge. Did I overheat my Stator by idling the bike for about 6 hours while trying to get through the traffic and people that act surprised when a bike wants to get through at a bike rally and dont get out of the way. Temps were in the mid 70's bike never overheated, the fan came on a lot.
  11. got to talk to two of the owners, Great guys! One was having headlight trouble and gave me an awesome Yamaha mechanic's phone number. The other had a great mods to his bike. Several really sweet looking Second Gens!
  12. Saw 4 1st gen ventures total other than mine. A awesome Mk II two tone gold Royale, a Burgundy Mk1 that was in great shape that I parked next to for a few hours. A black two tone Mk II royale that looked brand new! Wow that was a sweet looking bike. and a Burgundy Mk1 that.... well.... I've seen parts bikes that looked in better shape. but it ran! I see 2nd gens all over the place, but they disappear into the harleys so you have to look close, some very nice custom ones. and NO fjr1300's. I wanted to show my wife one and there is none to be seen. I'll post some photos later, Having too much fun.
  13. yup. My paramedic friend pulls more dead bodies out of SUV's that split open easily than any sub-compact cars. My wife and I are trading in our SUV for a pair of smarts later this year. I still have my suzuki Sidekick to drag the trailer for the bike. Buddy of mine get's 55+mpg city with his Smart(his calculated). He changed the wheels to be +2 in size and used Low rolling resistance tires and very light rims. Bonus is that the speedo is now accurate, and the gearing is taller because of the larger diameter tires. I'll take that over my 25mpg GM any day.
  14. My testing setup has a dead amp chip that I need to replace tonight, after that I'll take some readings for you. I dont have a scope but I can borrow one from a buddy that is not far away. My sensitive volume control was a sensitive pot. I cleaned it with some TV tuner cleaner and it worked again for a short while, It's still a bit wonky and Im still looking for a replacement piece. but it's good enough to get good readings from (It's just noisy when turning it now.
  15. Actually I'm not sitting on any dead radios, I have sent out a ton of calls for them and have not received any response. I'm still looking for more to compare and troubleshoot to identify problems. If I had some buttons I'd love to shoot some off to you. All I have is my one good working reference radio. and a couple of dead parts.
  16. If you want a red light changer for FREE simply look to see if you have a old computer hard drive laying around. tear it apart and you will find 1-2 of those super strong magnets in the head motor. Rip them out and stick them to your bike.
  17. You CAN find a Velcro sanding disk for a drill, and then buy a high speed buffer head that will Velcro to the drill pad. use a had drill on LOW and it will go faster. but you can still burn through edges and ridges.
  18. lack of radio in one channel is typically a failure in the big blue connector. Having stereo on the dash speakers but NONE in the headsets is confusing and sounds like a failure in the amplifier module. I have yet to map out the schematics inside the radio and Amplifier. noisy and sensitive controls is typically bad or dirty pots in the control pieces, take them apart and try spraying the pots with volume control cleaner (found at better electronic parts stores) and/or replace them. I have yet to measure one out to find out the value, but I'm betting it's a 10K or 100K audio taper. now the amplifiers are separate for the headphones and speakers. you may have a dead headphone amp chip. easiest solution is to buy a replacement amp module as I cant find a source for the parts yet.
  19. That's an outstanding workbench. I need to replicate that this summer, I cant use my buddies car lift all the time. I also am really glad I dont have a royale when I have to service the bike. All that extra stuff you gotta take off to get to the brakes, rearend, etc....
  20. Isn't the zerk fitting there actually "fake" as in it really does not lube the splines but misses it?
  21. 3m polishing compound and some glaze. Then end with a good wax. do NOT use a power buffer, only your hands, the paint on these bikes is really REALLY thin.
  22. I think It's a not really designed for motorcycle thing. The screen on the ones I have seen dont work in glaring sun. The Garmin on my bike is easier to read in full sunlight than when not. It's why I decided against the tom-Tom. I took at least 5 GPS's out of the box at the store and took them outside in bright sunlight before I settled on the Zumo and poneyed up the huge $$$ for it. It's the only one that is easy to read in full bright glaring sun. you can also take a really power flashlight to the store to weed out the ones that really are not motorcycle GPS's. No Nuvi, tomtom, or Magellan GPS passed my test. I hate paying more than $200.00 for any GPS, but I had to be able to read it no matter what and that was the only one that works for me.
  23. Yup. Dynamic versus electret microphones. Without adapter circuitry it wont work. It's cheaper to buy the $65.00 each headsets off ebay if you are not an electronics tech that can solder and wire up components. Otherwise get some connectors, some 9 volt regulators, and a pair of capacitors and wire up a electret power system to power the microphones and the 10uf capacitors will block the 9v DC from getting into the bike's intercom and frying it.
  24. you are correct, but a high metallic paint will affect it. My repaint will block Sirius/XM because I have a really high metallic paint base. the puck is so small I stickered it to the dash on the 1st gen. If you never carry stuff on your trunk rack, that's another good place.
  25. 1st takes the hardest beating though. when you floor it on takeoff 1st get's more stress than 5th will get in 200,000 miles of riding. you will be really upset if you took apart the tranny and you have 1st gear popping out on you later. Dont look for internal parts, look for whole engine assemblies to get your tranny parts. cheaper and easier. Most people do not disassemble them and sell the internals.
