Irene and I wear mesh kevlar shirts in the summer. Irene wears a sleeveless t-shirt under hers because they are mesh. When it's really hot I also wear a t-shirt under the kevlar and then we soak the shirts down with water. (Holds more water with the t-shirt.) The evaporative cooling is great. Much cooler than a t-shirt alone, and way more abrasion resistant. We wear kevlar lined jeans too, but they're not any cooler than regular jeans. On the other hand, they don't seem any hotter either.

Once again, truly sorry to hear it. At least he went in his sleep. I realize that's not much, but it could certainly have been worse.

I read the previous post on the screws and trotted right out and checked mine. One was more loose than I liked. Might not be the problem in this case, but definitely worth checking.

A little more creative license than the last...

Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Number nine. Ahhh. The classics.

Yeah, live and learn took on a whole new dimension. All my riding clothes are either kevlar, or kevlar lined.

Hey Squeeze, About that web site: Wow. No, really. Wow. I'm just... Wow.

Which they no doubt chose because of all the motorcycle hazards, and not because of any entertainment that may be available.

I'm not nearly old enough to be a plank owner. I do, however, have a belt buckle. The first is a file photo. The second is one I took with my shiny new Pentax Spotmatic, bought in the ship's store.

It's a 0 to 60, so it'll certainly do 0 to 7. It just won't be quite as accurate as the 0 to 15 Sarge was talking about.

After "A" school I was assigned to the USS Franklin D Roosevelt. Once I got through mess duty I showed up in the fire room along with another new guy. We went about learning and doing our daily routine. One day the First Class sent the other fellow after the keys to the firebox. I looked over at the boiler and noted that all it took to take it apart were a couple of the wrenches that we had in our tool locker. The guy who got sent after the keys was run around the whole ship looking for those keys. "Sorry, 4 Bravo just picked 'em up." "Nope, just sent them to 1 Alpha." Eventually he made it back, saying he couldn't find them. Everybody who wasn't new had a good laugh. I thought "Hmmmmmmm..." Eventually it was my turn. The First Class said, "Bummer, go to tool issue and get me some Monkey S..." I argued. "I'm not going to get Monkey S..., I'm not going after the keys to the firebox, and I'm not bringing you fifty feet of water line." He was insistent. I finally told him "No problem, I'm certainly not going to disobey an order, but when they send me to another space to get it, I'm going to a weather deck and I'll be back at the end of shift." He said ok and I left smiling about my impending day of goofing off. I got to tool issue and made my request. Much to my surprise the guy whips a gallon can up onto the counter and asks, "How much?" This was a question I was in no way prepared for. Turns out Monkey S... is a fiber filled putty that's used to pack gaps in the outer metal sheeting of marine boilers (and probably anything else somebody can think of - it makes a fairly adequate modeling clay - yet another sea story). I showed up with my dixie cup of monkey s..., everyone had a good laugh, and I got to pack some gaps in the firebox seams.

computer warning/moniter is blank help please

I'll try. Are you talking about the one between the speedo and tach, or the suspension one on the right side of the fairing? I never had any problems with the main unit on the dash, but I did have to resolder the connections on the CLASS board. I kept getting E1 on the display. I messed with it until it wouldn't come on at all, at which point I replaced the wires. The solder connections had broken loose from the board. If I'd have resoldered them all the first time around I probably wouldn't have had to replace the wires. Now, if you're talking about the dash unit, I don't have a clue. Good luck. -
Irene and I are glad to hear she's doing well. FYI folks, this sounds like a form of "external fixture". When my left leg was crushed they didn't put it in a cast. They put four extra long wood screws (sort of) into the bones and hooked them all together with clamps and rods. This method gives better immobilization than a cast while allowing for swelling and full access to the leg. The outfit they put on ankles and feet is very elaborate and involves metal rings along with the pins and clamps. The look of the setup tended to creep people out, but there was no pain to speak of and it all worked quite well for me. Nurse wants the leg moved? Grab the fixture and move it. The leg will follow. Much better than trying to handle all that angry meat. Mildly unpleasant photos of my external fixture can be seen here. Just a suggestion, but: When the Doc says it's ready for normal use, don't ask a bunch of detailed questions. "Is there anything I should know?" is good. "When can I ride again?" is the wrong thing to ask. My Doc follows several big-time racing circuits to fix the drivers who eat wall. He's good, with plenty of experience with crushed legs, but he's pretty much anti-motorcycle. If I'd have asked him when I could ride again I probably still wouldn't have permission. When he said full weight bearing/normal activities I picked up my new RSV and went riding again, a little here and a little there until I was back to normal mileages. Attitude is a huge part of recovery. Think positive. Get well, Annie.

Signal Light Relay Purchase
Bummer replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The four way flashers run off of a two wire relay inside the fairing. I used a "Trick Flasher" for a while, but it killed the auto cancel function, so I switched back. The fades and quick flashes didn't look quite right with incandescent bulbs, but they looked great when I switched to LEDs. I'd really like to go back, but I'm getting way too "mature" to remember to cancel every time. The one I bought is no longer available. Signal Dynamics sells a Programmable Flasher that is similar and should work, but it'll still kill auto cancel. I used a small screwdriver to remove the two wires from the flasher plug then plugged the Trick Flasher directly to them. The Signal Dynamics Programmable hooks up the same way. -
No need for that. It certainly looks convincing. Hey, I still like it. By the way, there are several others that scroll by on the You Tube page after that one plays.

Pretty darn cool, no matter how it's done.

You think this is bad, wait 'till we have the M&E and you have to look all surprised and hug and cry and stuff.

If you could have one new accessory added what would it be?
Bummer replied to Yama Mama's topic in Watering Hole
On the way out to Ft. Collins in '07 we saw a couple of Wings, one pulling a '57 Chevy, the other had a thirties 'rod. Pretty cool, but a boat? Now that's funny. Almost makes me wish I wanted a trailer. -
Not long ago I was driving the cage on the interstate loop around the city, on the way home from work. I wasn't on the bike, so I was being a bit more casual about passing a semi loaded with a couple of John Deere tractors. As I passed him one of his tie downs broke. The handle, about the size of a 14" pipe wrench, embedded itself in my windshield. While I've been concerned about 'gators for years, this added all the stuff on, in, and around the truck to my list. I no longer pass casually, no matter what I'm on or in.

Annie and Quickstep, You'll continue to be in Irene and my thoughts. We wish you both the strength to deal with the difficulties as they present themselves. Nothing would please us more than seeing a speedy recovery, but take all the time it requires.

Brad and Ladies, truly sorry to hear it. Hugs all around.

My wife would so NOT understand. I think I should go with that chromed Second Gen VMAX engine. I might actually survive doing that. Or more realistically, a set of those bag hinge insert thingies. (I knew I should have gotten a set the first time 'round.)
