What to check on a '97 Tour Classic?
Bummer replied to Bummer's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Of course you're not. What was I thinking? This is a pic of Lilsis and her Big Girl bike. All in all it's in very good condition. It'll be getting all new fluids, new tires, the foot boards put back where they belong, and some other tinkering, but no mouse nests. After two butt tests (I took it for a test ride) she decided to buy it. She got it for 800 under what he had it advertised for.- 31 replies

What to check on a '97 Tour Classic?

I figure if she likes it when she gets on it, it's a done deal. Not that she's stubborn or anything, but, well, she's stubborn. Meant in the most loving, brotherly sense possible, of course. Thanks for the comments. I'm sure by this time tomorrow we'll know.- 31 replies

What to check on a '97 Tour Classic?
Bummer replied to Bummer's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I've been looking over the shop manual and that's pretty much the conclusion I've come to. Possibly the battery. I plan to ask about the steering and swing arm bearings. Even if it's a no, it shouldn't be a big deal. Not too far past due. By the way, I still haven't scraped the boards. (I try to blame it on the leveling links but I doubt anybody's buying it.) She has marks on her V-Star foot boards. Hmmmmm. Besides, I think she's been lusting after something like this ever since I had her move my Venture while I was down for the bone graft. Once you get the bug... Thanks for the comment, Lynn.- 31 replies

Replacing clutch fluid with a MityVac
Bummer replied to Midrsv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Though I didn't try it, it seems like you could tie the lever against the grip and let gravity do most of the work. Worst case would be the traditional pump/hold/open/close method. I already had the vacuum pump, so it was just a natural. I liked the ability to easily vacuum out the reservoir and refill with clean. I was able to clean out the bottom without getting air in the system. -
Replacing clutch fluid with a MityVac
Bummer replied to Midrsv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I used something quite similar (had it too long to remember if it was that brand name) to change out front and rear brakes, and clutch fluids. I used it to remove the old fluid from the reservoir first, so I could top it off with fresh. Then I used it to pull the fluid through the system until the fresh was being pulled into the container. Piece o' cake. The hardest part was finding the right plastic adapter to fit on the bleeder(s). Of course, the standard "don't get sloppy", and "don't let it pull air" caveats apply. I also use it every spring to pull the gas I should have removed in the fall out of the lawnmower tank. Since I've had it I've even changed the fluid in my car and Irene's truck. I'd have never done it otherwise, though I'd have told myself I should. -
I've long considered the standard HD a "chick bike". Size mostly. Fits shorter legs better. My sister (Lilsis on here) rides a V-Star 650. This weekend we're looking at a '97 RS Tour Classic she's interested in.

My sister (Lilsis on here) is looking at a '97 Royal Star Tour Classic with 17k on it. What should I look at aside from the obvious stuff? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Bestem trunk bag looks like the current Star Line bag, which looks like the old original VentureLine bag from the First Gen with three outside pockets added. I've been using an original VentureLine bag since the early nineties. It's still a great trunk bag. The Star bag mentions a rain cover, the Bestem does not. Mine does not have a rain cover. Since I use it for our rain suits and a soft cooler most of the time that's not an issue, though it went all the way across Nebraska in the driving rain without leaking.

In case they don't already know.

Back to the cage, dammit
Bummer replied to woolwich's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Does seem more likely, doesn't it. On the other hand the shop may have a mechanic who's never worked on a Venture. And of course there's always that language barrier. You know, where they get a Japanese guy who doesn't speak English, give him the address to babelfish, and have him translate the manual. -
I have a three year old Samsung sports cam that has "anti shake" technology. I use a 3" RAM mount off of the right mirror base and try to place the lens right up against the windshield to help support it. The video is still a bit shaky, but I'm doing ride videos, not feature films. It'll do. For someone who's not already doing video, anything may be better than nothing. At this point, I'm prepared to be a little bit more picky about the next camera I buy. On the other hand, as long as I can keep using this one I'll wait to see where the technology goes.

That's why I wondered when I read his comment. If the shop's telling him they'll have to replace the cylinder gaskets they may be in for a bit of a surprise. First off they're gonna be hard to order... -

Look closely before you buy. There's more than one kind of Go Pro. At $100 it's probably the older lores version rather than the newer HD version.

I prefer to run a more exotic blend. It's mostly nitrogen, at about 78%, but it also has a little argon, neon, krypton, xenon, and co2. Plus a bit of helium, and even a tiny bit of hydrogen. Oh, and about 20% oxygen in case of emergencies. I've been using it for over forty years. So far, so good.

I don't really have any doubt about the V-Max springs, I'm more curious about the difference between the Second Gen springs and the First Gen springs. Ultimately it comes down to whether to stay at 7250 or go back to 7500. I'm pretty sure I don't want to push 8k.
-
That's kind of the problem. I don't know how far they went softening up the Second Gen valve springs. That's why I've kept it at 7250. I have a year (about) of warranty left. After that I'm thinking about changing springs and cams. Thing is, at that point the carb size starts to become an issue. The old V Boost cross connects might do the trick, but I don't know if they could be shoe horned in. Even if they fit I'd have to come up with a way to operate them. I have an '85 with 168k on it. Pretty used up, but I can use parts off of it if they'll fit. It's all pretty speculative right now.
-
Like Jello, there's always room for stupid.
-
I've gone over 8k (unintentionally) on my First Gen and hit 7500 a few times on the Second. I set the Second at 7250 as insurance. Don't want to get there too often. That may be a bit of an overstatement. There may be no need to walk. Depends on how high for how long, and whether the valves wind up floating as a result.
-
That's the Dyna3000 I mentioned above.
-
Ahh, but you should. At least a couple of times. Otherwise how will you know how tight you can wind one? I think the stock red line is 6500 rpms, though I've read one person who quoted 6400. The real point is that the engine is quite happy to run that rpm. It may not be the most economical point on the throttle, but the engine doesn't mind. Most of the folks who come to the Venture from V-twins tend to under-rev this engine. I met a guy once who told me he liked the Venture, but had trouble keeping up with his buddies on Harleys. I said "Wha...?" I told him to bump against the rev limiter and learn his engine. He did. Now they have to work to keep up with him.
-
You could get a Dyna3000 and turn it up high enough to be dangerous. Mine's set at 7250. I've bumped into it occasionally, but not very often any more. I went from a First to a Second Gen and I'm getting my senses trained. I had it set for 7500 but figured that was pushing it with these valve springs.
