Did I miss the post that suggested replacing the plugs? I have seen more than one bad plug show up with those symptoms - even in my airplane. Replace the plugs, and start testing again.

Jet Block Gasket

SkyDoc, ya did good! -
As many of you know, the cover where I want to mount a map holder is plastic. I just spent more than a couple of hours looking at websites that have many different types and styles and none seemed "Venture Friendly" to me. So - anyone have a recommendation on brand/make/model of "tank luggage" you like for your first gen that has a map window on it? Thanks for your time!!! Larry

Carb Diaphragm info...finally
TexasFlyer replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey guys, According to the discussion I just read over in the watering hole, the SD-1 part that we ordered from Sirius does not fit a Venture. I guess I got confused somewhere along the line and thought we all were ordering parts for Ventures. The discussion shows those parts being advertised on Ebay with clear text showing the SD-1 is ID 28mm but the Yamaha Venture needs the ID to be 30mm???? Anyone able to respond to this? I HOPE the SD-1 I ordered is the correct part for my Venture, as I have been waiting for nearly five weeks with a down bike. Any comments are welcome.- 122 replies

Dumb or just plain stupid?
TexasFlyer replied to JimRoberts's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I was lucky enough to just rotate the end caps counterclockwise and they unscrewed. I KNOW they are not macho-man tight upon reattaching, but they are good enough for me. Good luck with yours! -
Carb Diaphragm info...finally
TexasFlyer replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, I applaud Dick in his ability to snatch the gold ring so quickly. I placed my order with Martin through email 3 MINUTES after the post was made here on this forum... even got Martin's reply within minutes... and same-day Paypal receipts and all... ...and got the sold-out message when they opened for business on Monday. I guess they had the one set? Any other ideas??- 122 replies

Kickstand Safty switch
TexasFlyer replied to rayzar52's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My most recent issue with the switch was freezing - the grease, when cold, just would NOT let the switch release. Sitting overnight in the cold, jump on in the morning, flip up the kickstand and --- no go --- sometimes would release after a few minutes. Put it in neutral and it would start fine, click down into first and it would die because the computer thought the kickstand was still down. No fun. Bypassed. Then I started off one day with the kickstand down and almost dumped the bike on my first left turn. No fun. My new switch will be delivered this week.- 5 replies

How many will buy carb diaphragms
TexasFlyer replied to Freebird's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
While we are all waiting for word on the new diaphragms, I felt the need to go off-group and talk to an old-timey Venture Rider... and he gave some wonderful insight to a lot of issues. But the biggest thing for me, as my bike was _down_ due to diaphragm pinholes, was this tip: Take out the offending diaphragms, take a tube of Yamaha Gasket Sealer, put small amount on finger and make a thin coating of the sealer over the holes to seal them up. Let dry and reinstall. He said they had to do that often in the old days, but now even more so as the ethanol in the gas eats the rubber more quickly. So I did it, and BINGO the bike started right up and I road it all over the place today. Good response for a temporary fix. Will be patient for the word about the possible purchase from our tech thread here. Thanks everyone! Larry- 57 replies

Building a 83 trailer hitch.
TexasFlyer replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I also have an '83 Venture that would like to have a hitch. Have trailer, no hitch. I likely can build it - I have the resources - if I can get drawing/pix. As said by others - any help is appreciated!! -
Yep, Ike got us too. The edge - call it the southwest edge - of the eye of the storm just caught our house and neighborhood in SW Houston. My wife who is an RN was 'called up' and stationed at the hospital where she works - and I am a missionary pilot student on site here in Springdale, AR...so neither of us were in the house during the worst of the hurricane.... but my son and daughter and son-in-law and two grandkids and dog and cats all live there and they rode out the storm in my house. They all huddled downstairs in the room with the least windows because the wind was too loud to feel safe upstairs. They broke out the candles when they lost power about 1AM but got it back around 10AM. Neighbors most all had roof damage, trees down, fences totally gone and other problems. God kept His promise to me and protected us - no damage, no tree issues, no flooding issues and no fence issues - while all around us had damage. And our good fortune allowed the kids to make and take warm food over to the church on Sunday where people had gathered who had had nothing to eat for two days. Praise the Lord for He is good. I am headed home on the bike this coming Friday - usually an 11-12 hour straight ride. Anyone aware of the travel conditions north/south from Houston? I am headed south on 71 to Texarkana and picking up 59 south into and thru Houston --- which usually runs me past the areas of the city that I hear were hit the hardest. I hear power is still spotty which affects gas station pumps. Comments are welcome!

Anyone heard from Paul lately? I haven't heard from him in a few weeks. Is he alright? I got a message from him on the 14th of August a few days after I had placed my order for cables and he mentioned he was recovering from a medical problem. I hope all is well with him. Anyone?

Well, after cogitating on the problem, contemplating the budget and sleepin' on it.... I have decided on a short-term solution: Put back in the AF/FM Stereo boat radio the previous owner had installed, and tune it to the FM Stereo channel which allows me to receive from one of those little FM Stereo transmitters (avail at WallyWorld) that plug into a cigarette lighter (the cig.lighter also was installed by the previous owner) and plug in my new MP3 player (avail at WallyWorld) into the FM transmitter and WOOHOO - music of my own choosing, no commercials and no fading between cities!!! Good to go - at least for now!! Thanks to everyone for your input! It helped alot!
-
Of course, the MP3 player could be mounted into or on the new left-hand panel I will need to make to cover the vacant hole... that would eliminate wires running up the back side of my handlebars. Anyone seen a panel-mounted MP3 player? Maybe Wallyworld??
-
When I bought my 83 Venture, the previous owner had (butchered) installed a BOAT radio/cassette in the left glove box area. I suppose he thought it was a good idea at the time. I am very seriously considering pulling out his installation and going with a later technology - such as an MP3 player accessed from a handlebar position... with an amplifier mounted out of sight somewhere. So I come to y'all ---- Anyone have a recommendation on a MP3 player that can be used in a motorcycle application?? Weather issues to consider? Some/any MP3 players have radio AM/FM built in? [note: some of my friends ride their Harlies while using an MP3 player in their vest with noise-blocking ear-buds... but some states prohibit headphones and other types of ear-passage-obstruction so I lean away from that right now.] Any recommendations on an decent amplifier??? My speakers are the 4-ohm 100W variety one on each channel up front on the Venture. How about some kind of an audio panel or passive mixer/switcher to be able to also hear the CB radio audio? Those available? I have little... actually no experience in what it would take to make music heard over the noise as I cruise. Any and all ideas are very welcome!! Thanks!

Thanks for all the prayers and well-wishes. Oh YES! Permatex --- Just exactly the kind of info I needed. I will run out and get some tonight. Exactly what I needed!. Thanks mtman and all!

Sorry to hear about Boomer going down. Glad to hear he is on the mend. That was a rough weekend!!! I also am 58 years old, and I also went down July 26th, 2008. And I know why I went down. After about 6 hours in the saddle on the Arkansas and Missouri twisting roads I entered a left decreasing radius turn and instead of looking left - I looked at the side of the road straight ahead of me... and drove straight for it. Just like slow motion. Slid the 83 Venture down into the gravel on it's left side, tore a hole in my left elbow and rolled twice. I missed church the next day, as I got home from the ER about 1 AM. No broken bones, sore neck muscles and 6 staples in the elbow. Back at work Monday. To God be the Glory. The bike is now partially disassembled at my hanger and I am learning how to repair cracked fairings... but no damage to the motor or other hard stuff. Last point: Because of the crash, I started looking for answers and I found this club. You all are great and I am very pleased to meet you. Our prayers are with you Boomer!
