When riding solo I'm fine but when my wife is along that's where I notice the slow speed handling issues. When I decide to go for a ride she ask's which bike? If I say the classic then she will ride her bike ( honda shadow) if I say the venture she's right there with helmet in hand waiting for me to get ot out of the garage. It's funny when I first bought the classic she rode with me until she decide to learn to ride and purchased the honda, since we bought the venture last year thats the only bike she wants to ride now, go figure. I have talked about selling it but I would have a tough time convincing her to let me get something else as she really likes this bike, but knows the weight and handling intimidates me.

I bought this bike used last year so I don't know if these 404's are the originals or if they were replaced by the first owner. The first owner had traded the bike on a new harley and the second owner had it 2 weeks as his wife didn't want to ride with him. The second owner the guy I purchased it from bought it right when it was traded on the harly. He was at the dealer the day it was traded. The title was in the transfer stage when I bought it, so the second owner never really put any miles on it. So I figure these tires may as well be original as the bike appeared to have low miles for an 02. Well you guys have convinced me on tire replacement will make the call tomorrow and get this taken care of for peace of mind and handling.

The factory tires d404's I take it are bias ply where as the dunlop e 3's are radials ? If so I could see the difference in handling all together. I did do a search and it appears that the avons have some issues in the past, but the e'3's seem to have positive opinions. I guess when I get the tires replaced should I get the rear splines lubed as well? I figure I will get this taken care of now before the trip, safety first.

Info,I'm 5'10 170 lbs. Tire pressues always at recommend pressures, I check every week before riding. Have about 38 lbs. in rear shock and will add more when loading up for the trip. Front shocks at 4 psi. I agree about the age of tires, tread wear is still good as I'm a Pa. state inspection mechanic and no damage or abnormal wear on the tires. I realize that 10 k is getting close to tire replacement, I figure next riding season for sure. I could tell some stories about some riders wanting inspections with well used tires that would make your head spin. I may take the advise on the tire age in consideration before the trip, sure don't want any issues. Looked into risers in a mail order book that states, it makes the bike feel several hundred pounds lighter, any truth to this?

Well I've had my 02 midnight almost a year now and just rolled over 10 k. today, had almost 7 k on it when I bought last year. I really like the bike, but with 2 up I'm still very intimidated by the weight and the awkwardness of the bike during low speeds when going through towns and making turns at intersections. I rode a friends ultra the other day and I must say I like the way it handled at low speeds in town. I know the venture is top heavy, but I just can't get comfortable and become one with the bike. Two weeks from now my wife and I are heading to Ocean City Md. for the bike week, actually going for the whole week for our vacation this year. I have considerd taking my 1500 classic instead as it's easy to handle around town, but will not be as comfortable as the venture will be. That's why I have the venture for longer trips. So my question, is there any suggestions on how to get the venture to handle any better? I've read that tire replacement helps, but I don't want to replace the originals just yet, maybe by next riding season. My wife's afraid at times I may drop up us,so far that hasn't happened, but it's in the back of my mind all the time:whistling:. Any help would be great, thanks..

Well I had a fellow venture rider help me sync. my carbs.last night and what a difference. I bought this bike last year and with the help of this site I'm more happy now with the bike than before. The road king mufflers are starting to come around now,a little more pronounced, but not loud. As in my previous post I had some doubts on the muffler switch, but I made the right call. The loud afterfire/backfire is now gone only a nice low rumble on decel, not the embarassing popping. The bike has better acceleration when rolling on the throttle and no slight flat spots throughout the riding rpm's, also idle is smoother. I can 't say enough about the help that fellow venture riders here have helped me with my bike. I purchased the hd mounting plates here from another member and the quality is great. Powercoating is nise and they fit right on without any issues. I can say I practially had a smile on my face the whole 30 or miles home. -

Seaking, Quite possible about the heat and humidity. Wife and I are going with others tomorrow to York Pa. for the save the plant ride. Local HD. plant may be shutting down and they are having a ride tomorrow and then on Monday another ride from York to Milwalkee with their petition. Other's we are going with all have HD's. and we'll be on our venture, may we'll get the mufflers burned in some and they will somewhat be more pronounced. I can't really notice any bark during accel. May have to modify some. As I said earlier the stock venture muffs. with just the rear cone removed and some holes drilled in the rear baffle were louder. With the stock HD'S on I now can hear the whine again, oh what to do...I would hope all bikes are allowed on this ride not just HD'S, if so we may have rocks throwed at us, ha,ha. Seriously though I hate to see any U.S. industry go down and out... -

Well, I just got back from about a 10 mile roadtest with the hd mufflers. At idle they sound nice, a mellow tone, but while cruising and accelerating the are not to much louder than stock mufflers,as a matter of fact I did the stage one mod on the stock venture mufflers and they had a lower deeper tone at idle and during cruise. Not sure what to do now, either drill them out or leave them on until I get the cash put back for aftermarket mufflers. The hd's are stock now and cost wise it would be cheaper to modify these. I didn't notice any difference on accelerating. Still has a backfire on the right side and now after the hd installs, I have a very slight backfire on the left side as well. I did a complete plug change as the bike has near 10 k on it. Will get the carbs. synced soon as I hoped the takes care of the backfire/afterfire which I absolutley hate, very annoying and embarrasing. Well that's it for my update for now. Ride safe..... -

Dave38x, I have my muffler's installed today and using a p type clamp temporarily until my mounting brackets show up. I will most likely drill out the plug on the one muffler today and see if that increases the exhaust flow, then have the carbs. synced. If this has the same issues as your bike has I guess will remove them and put the cash back to buy aftermarket mufflers. Let me your progress if you get it dialed in. -

I never thoght about that balance tube your talking about, that may equalize the exhaust. Not sure if the roadking bikes have this tube. A friend of mine just traded his fatboy that did have the balance tube, but his ultra does not. I looked as other's have said about the supposed yellow brick inside the inlet end and mine doesn't have this. Standing at the rear of the bike the left muffler has a wire mesh throughout the muffler at the outside edge and right muffler has this plug like baffle throughout the muffler and at the outlet end there is a plug type block in the center with holes surrounding it. May be the newer mufflers are a different type of cat if there is one, but I can's see no yellow type of brick inside either one. I did slide them on and the left side is somewhat louder and appears to be more flow at idle. As I mentioned in my initial post, not sure if flow will have an effect or not. I don't want to modify these mufflers and make them loud, just a nice low deep sound at idle and while cruising. I may just drill out that rear plug thing to increase flow and I'm sure it will increase some sound, but I don't want to screw up the exhaust flow from one side to the other and create other issues. The service guy at the dealership said there was no cats. in the muffler or mufflers. -

Well I did go through the 2nd gen tech section and on page 65 according to others when looking down through the muffs.there should be a yellow looking brick inside and that is the cat. These muffs. are from an 09 and do not have the cat. in them. So I guess not all later mufflers have the cats. Maybe by certain applications, don't know. I did look at both ends and the one has like offset plugs and the other looks a different with no offset plugs.I guess when the rest of my parts get here I will finish the job and road test. -

Thanks, for the replies. I'm a self employed auto mechanic, and I know what a cat. convertor looks like on a car ,but not sure about a bike exhaust. I looked down through it and it doesn't appear to have any type of honeycomb blockage only a half moon looking baffle at different stages through the muffler. Since both mufflers are some what different inside I'm sure the flow would be different from side to side. These were new take off that didn't even have any exhaust blowed through them until tonight on the venture. I did see some other posts about the stock hd muffs.being as quiet as the venture stock muffs. I can tell you these are not. At idle they have a pronounced low deep rumble an do bark nice when the throttle is opened up. Maybe I'm getting older, but I think they sound pretty good stock. I guess if they were installed on a harley they would work alright with maybe different exhaust pulses being a v twin vs. a v4, just not sure... -
I know this has been discussed here before, but I picked up a new set of rk mufflers that came off of an 09 roadking. I asked the service guy if they had the cats in one or both of them. He didn't know what I was talking about, he said there is no cats in the mufflers from factory, if there was it would calif. only. I did look down through them and there is a difference between the two. So tonight I removed the stockers and just slid them on to hear them, I likely!! Anyhow with one being different than the other would exhaust flow be affected from one side to the other? One a v-twin I guess it would have the same effect as a v4 with both muffs being different. I don't want to modify these mufflers if I don't have to to balance out both sides as flow goes. At idle it does seem as though the left side is a little louder and has some more exhaust flow than the right. I'm waiting for the mounting brackets and clamps to show up to complete the install. Can anyone else tell me if the installed the mufflers with different internals, and if so did you notice any differnce other than sound? Thanks.....

I'm interested can you add myself and wife to your list? Missed M&E last year, but can make this one. It's our first one and looking forward to it.

Thanks for the info. Funny thing a harley friend of mine call just a few mins. ago and while on the phone I just happen to ask if he had any mufflers laying around and he said yea, a hole box full of them what do you need them for you ride a jap bike. I explained to him what guys are doing, he said stop by and look to see if there is anything you can use. He said he had a set on vance and hines pipes and some other's. Will aftermarket harley pipes work? I guess they would bolt up the same as the stockers. Oh yea he has an 03 roadking. cecdoo where and when is the meet at this week end? Wife and I may be interested in a little ride. I had chatted with you before. I'm from shbg.

I've read on here about the changing the exhaust by installing the harley or by getting aftermarket pipes. Has anyone on here ever removed their factory mufflers and modified them as most have done with the harley pipes? Aftermarket pipes are out of the question do to cost. Why can't the stock exhaust be modified as the harley pipes? are they that much different inside? Sorry for the questions, but I would like my 02 to sound more like a motorcycle than a sewing machine , not loud, just a nice low deep rumble. Thanks.....

I'm not familiar with putting lucas in bikes. I have used their oil supplement to quiet noisy lifters in high mileage cars and it works. I believe lucas just came out with a motorcycle oil, so I guess they are trying to get involed in that market as well. I know quite a few harly riders that use amsoil 20w50 in their bikes and have stated basically the same findings that I have found. My wife has a honda shadow aero and at times she had problems getting the shifter to go in to 5th gear with the dino oil in it. I changed it over to amsoil with a new filter and within 5 miles it shifted alot better. I didn't tell her what I did I let her comment on how the bike shifted. I've been using amsoil for over 2 riding seasons with no problems. Along with her honda, I also have a kawasaki 1500 classic and the latest toy the venture. I can only state what has worked for me and my success...

I just purchased an 02 royal star 2 weeks ago and changed oil and filter. I've used amsoil 10w40 in my other bikes with great success. I put the venture on the amsoil as well and the motor seemed quieter to me and even shifted smoother as it did on my other bikes. Alot of guys that I talked to over the last 2 years or so have switched from dino to amsoil and have reported the same things. I'm an inspection mechanic so I get to talk to alot of riders throughout the year and I have'nt heard anything negative about sythetics, just my observations. My wife and I just got back from a 7 hr. trip to Niagra falls last week and the bike performed flawlessly.
