My 2000 is a 6mm, and because it's at an angle it almost "snaps" in. That's why I tap it a time or two, to make sure it's seated well. Definitely don't want to round those puppies off.

Count me among the NO spacer fans. After you do it the first time, it's easy to pull the light bar. I just tap a long ball end Allen wrench into the bolt head and turn it with a pair of Channel Locks. The Allen wrench rubs on the bottom of the fairing, but even if it scratches the paint you'll never see it.

That would appear to be a popular corner to demonstrate a lack of riding skills on.

I have something close to what you describe. My pain also goes down into my left arm, and I also have a burning pain in my upper spine/neck. I couldn't ride for 2 months last summer and have had the problem for about 6 weeks this time. EEG, Xray and MRI have led the Doc to a diagnosis of Arthritis in my spine causing swelling and pinching nerves/blood vessels. I have been thru physical therapy with no help. Probably going to try the Spinal steroid injections. Downside to that is it may not help and if they screw up You never get to walk again. Good luck with yours. I may be screwed.

I asked my Old Lady, and she said she's never noticed any vibration at all from the backrest. Maybe check the mounting bolts.

What about a folding hunter style pocket knife? I usually keep a leatherman in my tool bag/on my belt, and an belt clip knife with about a 3 1/2" blade clipped to the document pouch in each saddlebag and one in the trunk.......no I'm not totally paranoid. I'm just a knife collector, so I wind up with a lot of spares/cheaper knives so they wind up everywhere. Plus I always have a small Case or Buck or Old Timer or Uncle Henry folder in my pocket. 1 1/2" to 2" blade.

Noticing Differences from goldwing forums to Venture RS forums
straycatt replied to muaymendez1's topic in Watering Hole
There are many mods that I have found here, and done. The R1 caliper swap from Skydoc. The grease zerk in the steering head mod. The V7Goose windshield mount to speaker bolt reinforcement. I forget who it was but, the acetone and ABS shavings, fairing crack repair. Help, advice, and the loan of a clutch tool for the upgrade/repair of the "I" basket. Again, help and advice on the purchase and install of Sonic fork springs. Sometimes you do have to search around for the info, but it is there. -
Hmm, good question. The experience that I have with oil sludge in the res/rad cap has been with the motor in several cars that I've worked on. Of the two that I owned both were blown head gaskets. One was repaired and the oil problem went away. The other was discovered at 80K miles and has never been fixed.....it now has 150K miles on it and still runs fine, and still has the oil sludge. I would take the bike in for service under warranty. Oil in the coolant, in any quantity, is not right.

Is it possible that your cornering technique needs a little work? I don't mean to question your riding prowess, but could you be pushing the bike over too far instead of leaning your body into the corner thereby allowing the bike to stay a little more upright. That is a very common rider error.

RSV much worse in crosswinds than 1st Gen?
straycatt replied to Grisolm1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just to show how much mileage varies, I too, have never been on a 1st gen, have been riding dozens of different bikes over better than 40 years, and my 2nd gen is also my first big touring bike. The ONLY scoot that handles the wind worse than my Venture that I can think of is an old dualsport Suzuki 400 that I used to have. All of that plastic/fairing/windshield/tour pack on the RSV acts just like a big sail and any brisk wind will try to shove it around. However, just like any bike once you know how it's going to act, it's not that big of a deal. Just go with the flow. -
Looks like another one of those ideas that appears great at first glance, but in practice isn't that great. If you can line up well enough to hit the beginning of that ramp, you can line up well enough to hit your ball. Second, a trailer with an heavy tongue weight is not likely to slide enough laterally on its stand to allow that "funnel" to guide the receiver to the ball. The best thing to consistently mate trailer to truck is practice.

Progressive front springs installed.. WOW
straycatt replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Exactly so. I had done Springs (Sonic), seals, bushings, oil, neck bearings, a few weeks ago. That required removal of fairing/fender/wheel/brakes/forks/etc and took several days to accomplish. However I did also change the coolant, make some crack repairs to the fairing, and a few other maintenance chores while I had it apart. After riding it with the new springs, I decided to add a little more pre-load on the springs. The dis-assembly for this is pretty much the same procedure for changing the springs except I didn't change the oil again. This was done yesterday. Counting a few breaks and the hunt for a dropped washer that fell into the engine/radiator area (I found it after taking apart all of the lower cowl area), it took in the range of 7 hours start to finish. None of this is overly difficult for even a modestly experienced wrench, but it is time consuming. -
Reduced fuel economy...that varies
straycatt replied to Venturer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I generally get around 40 mpg, give or usually take depending on how far into the twist I get. There are few if any Ventures getting 50 mpg. I would say most RSV's are in the 35 to 45 range. There are too many variables to judge mileage from one or two tankfuls of fuel. -
I hate to beat a dead horse here, but I got to thinking about how the radio control functions. The need to scroll thru the control functions before you are able to manually scan the frequency makes perfect sense and IS the proper operation of the radio controller. In the normal radio mode there are two functions to the up/down rocker. Pushing the button (either up or down) for less than a second changes to the next preset station. Pushing the button for longer than two seconds seeks the next STRONG station. That's it. Those are the only two functions possible from the rocker in normal mode, push for less than one second and more than two seconds. Now if you want to add another function to the up/down rocker you have to take the radio out of its normal radio mode, that's where the need to scroll thru the functions comes in. Doing that puts the radio in "manual" mode and allows you to use the up/down rocker for another function. Then the radio can take itself back to normal mode and return the rocker to its normal two functions.

I have no dog in this hunt, but I think it should be up to those members that have items in that section.

I used Kreem on an '73 TS 400 gas tank that I rehabed a few years ago and it is still holding in that tank. Relatively easy to use with good results. Having never used the Red Kote I can't comment on that, but if the directions for the Red stuff are like Kreems, and it says DON'T let it get on any paint that you want to keep....believe it. I let a few drops of the acid wash splatter on the paint on the Suzuki and even though I rinsed it off immediately it stained the paint. Another possible option is if you have a Gas Tank Renu Company anywhere nearby they do an excellent job. One of my friends had them coat a 3 gallon gas tank from his log splitter. The vibration had actually worn a small hole in the tank. It cost him $75 but was a perfect and durable job. The coating that they use almost looked like pick up spray on bedliner material.

am I getting ripped off ?
straycatt replied to Gogosa's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I don't see how you could possibly get $400 into seals and jets.....even if you replaced every single jet in all four carbs. PartShark.com carb bowl O ring retail $7.22 your price $5.02 needle jet set--------$12.52---------- $11.30 needle valve set----- $15.95---------- $14.09 main jet------------- $4.90----------- $4.42 pilot jet------------- $3.99----------- $3.60 diaphragm assy------ $31.86---------- $21.66 throttle valve-------- $45.29---------- $30.42 You could feasibly have quite a few $$ in parts if you replaced everything in the carbs, but just needles and bowl gaskets........ -
I'm still carrying a 6-8 year old Motorola Razor, and I rarely drop a call.

I usually run 35 lbs in the rear when two up, and have found that it takes about a week to leak down to 25 lbs and then that's where it stays. Shrader valve is tight with no leaks there, and the hose down to the shock seems to be good as well. I run zero in the front so no issue there.

Well, I don't remember mine working this way before, but Don (XV11) seems to have been right. I scrolled thru the functions with the select button and then I could manually tune the stations. Weird.......Thanks All.

Yea, it could just be that with the cold weather and my cement block garage that holds the cold, my buttons are sticky. I'll definetly mess with it more before I tear down the fairing again and post my result. There is some good info in this discussion.

I'm thinking Eck may be right. I don't remember having this problem last summer, but I just did the R&R on my forks and neck bearing and when I went to reset all of my radio stations the manual tune didn't want to work. Every electrical connection behind the fairing was dry, tight and in great shape so I didn't see a need to grease any of them when I put everything back together. Now, with Ecks post, I'm wondering if I did get them all together good. All of the other functions are OK, so I think it's a long shot but it is the only thing that's changed from last year. On the other hand, I rarely ever tune stations manually other than to set the presets so it could have been malfunctioning for a while. Looks like I'll probably split the fairing, again.

Big thanks to Bob Myers!
straycatt replied to flb_78's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
flb, What all did you replace? I changed the suggested upper and lower bushings, the copper crush washers on the damper rod bolts, and the oil seals. I didn't replace the dust seal because they rarely give problems, and I'm not counting the springs and spacers as "must replace" parts but they should be done as long as you're in to the forks. the parts for one side of the forks.... -
There is an ice cream shop (not DQ) and a bar/restaurant (The Dam Site Inn) and that's about it. Big rider hang out/destination in the summer. There are some good roads to run in the area now that they've been resurfaced.
