  1. disagreements are the basis for obtaining new knowledge, for me any way. It is entirely possible to do that when the band is "open". Having that for dependable and reliable communication with out hitting a repeater is not going to happen at the power levels the HT run. There used to be a few repeaters out here in the east on some of the upper GMRS freqs but with the availability of the radios the owners decommissioned most of them. Also from the FCC website; § 95.3 License required. Before any station transmits on any channel authorized in the GMRS from any point (a geographical location) within or over the territorial limits of any area where radio services are regulated by the FCC, the responsible party must obtain a license (a written authorization from the FCC for a GMRS system). 2. Curt, I cruised through your pictures and I must say, You are quite the photo bug, guy. I really like the nature scenes and pics of the Gson, both so innocent and unposed. You should be proud of your abilities.
  3. Thats UHF, 462Mhz stuff. licensed operator, and license is $85.00. On the plus side you can run 50 watts and a detachable antenna, making it better for long distance simplex, if you have the electrical power for it. Expect a draw of more than 8 amps on a mobile unit, very, very short life on a battery powered hand held(HT). License restriction is biggest deterrent, FRS(still UHF), or MURS(VHF band) have no license required. An excerpt I gleaned from a communications site, you results may vary; FRS radio range: Generally stated as "up to 2 miles," you should note that this manufacturer’s stated range should be construed as the absolute max, to be achieved only under optimal conditions (such as flat terrain, no obstructions and full batteries). Somewhere in the 1/4 to 1 mile range, depending upon conditions, is much more realistic. GMRS radio range: GMRS radios typically achieve greater ranges than FRS radios. GMRS range is generally specified by manufacturers as "up to 5 miles" and occasionally slightly more. Again, this is a maximum range, likely achieved only under optimal conditions. Realistic range for GMRS radios under most conditions is more likely 1-2 miles, depending upon the particular conditions. From what I've seen and tried over the last few years, the description of the range expected on a frs is seriously overstated. My actual real world range from one truck to another in the woods was less than 500 feet.
  4. That would be pretty cool to do, I guess. I don't care for crowds or standing around staring at the scenery. If you guys want to alter the route to go there I would like to know before Friday.
  5. OK, so when can I expect UPS to deliver my new FTM-10? Give me a crack at it before it hits fleebay
  6. I have fitted Alinco 2m ht on both my wifes Vulcan and mine. I do not have one on the Venture yet, but that is lying on the bench waiting to get installed
  7. I too carry ham gear, always have a 2m HT nearby. It has been modded to be legal limit output on MURS channels, as well as come down to 2m to ragchew on the repeaters. With the FRS radios a realistic range is less than a mile, usually you can see farther than you can talk. I swapped on a firestick 2m antenna tonight to replace my duckie antenna(on my Alinco DJ191) and found that simplex I could actually talk from my motorcylce 8 miles back to my base, on 1½ watts. On the factory supplied antenna about 2 miles is limit. And yes that is crystal clear FM
  8. What seems tp be the problem or at least, what are the symptoms of your radio problems? As for FRS radios, I wouldn't waste my money on that junk, but that is my opinion. If I were buying something to replace the cb it would be a MURS radio. More power, lower frequency, means better range, more clear signal for same money.
  9. Ok, Count Tina and I in. We'll either be on the Venture or our Vulcans, depending on the weather forecast. 9 am sounds a bit late for a starting time, it'll be 11am before we put the kickstands up meeting there. Most of the touristy cagers are bounding out around that time in search of good ole southern cooking too. With 3 motels within walking distance it could get busy Personally I could care less, as long as I get to ride. Tina and I do enjoy good conversation but once you get me started you may end up sitting through lunch too. So, short version; give us an itinerary of the day and we'll make it happen, and maybe room for more
  10. The 9th is my only free weekend also, Gkids will be here on the 2nd so the Asheville trip is kaput for us, I'm off to Salt Lake City on the 15th so,,,, We're in. Unknown as to what we'll ride, both Vulcans or the Venture Royale'.
  11. I always downshift, every thing I ride/drive. My pickup is a F250 with 276k miles, still has the factory brakes on rear, second set on front. My Vulcan has 24k on both original brakes, wife Vulcan has 22k on original front, rear shoes separated from aluminum backing. Venture has new pads on front because of seal leaks
  12. Stats man, we need stats! What did you do, a 1k or 1.5k? I have a 1.5 coming up in August, Lexington Ky to Salt Lake City, stay 2 days and do the same thing home again.
  13. No sir, i have a 1st gen., the rollback is to haul my offroad Bronco http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i301/Bob_Myers/Picture032.jpg The enclosed is to haul my wifes and my Vulcans to points of more interest.
  14. I cannot get away on Monday to ride with you but, if you have problems just call and I'll get away anyway. Like I said earlier, I have an enclosed trailer, and a capable diesel truck to drag it, most any tools you would need, and if all else fails I also own a rollback crew cab. I have a shop in Lexington(machine shop) where we could beat, bang, fix, weld, or simply tear up most anything.
  15. My plans for Saturday as in post #12 has changed, if you wish wife and I can meet you near Louisville on Sunday and ride to Charleston with you. Weather is calling for rain here on Sunday!
  16. looks just like hers, except hers looks more like leather. Obviously a different bag
  17. it is a faux leather looking thing, yes it is an emgo bag. Must be older then since it is faux leather
  18. Hmm, hers did not or it would have been on there!
  19. I proudly bought one of those "Buffalo Bags" for my wife. While on a trip to NC last month we ran into rain. The cheap dye in that bag ran onto and and ruined every piece of clothing in her bag. My Tbag was as dry inside as it were before the rain.
  20. I put progressives in and left out the 1inch long spacer. It sits up on the kickstand now, actually looking like it may tip over, riding 2 up(collectively we weigh around425) with zero air pressure it still rides high enough that it took about 25 turns on the headlamp adjuster to get the headlamp down to a reasonable level. Now to do something with the rear to eliminate the bottoming
  21. we'll have the grandkids this weekend or I would meet you in Louisville and ride to Beckly with you. I'm in Lexington, trailer, tools, tow truck. 859-494-2259 cell #
  22. I see a pattern developing here. MAybe these little dogs have the Napolean complex manifesting itself and they are forcing their humans to chase and try to catch bikes. Possibly we should start rounding up these lap dogs and eliminate,,err, I mean interrogate at length.
  23. You mean when you came to the stop, you were in the left portion of the lane, wife in right portion, with her more forward toward the stop light than you, and this wannabe trophy pulled up alonside your right side, and up against your wife? Interesting scenario, glad the cop saw it although she should have at least gotten an illegal use of lane ticket.
  24. Nice pair of boots and belt on the hoof(so to speak)
  25. So, who has it now? Posting up that it is in your possession would be good, and posting when it leaves would be even more good for the rest of us.
