Another one you may be very interested in is the FTM 10. There are 2 versions of it, the 50 watt and a 10 watt, both feature a waterproof face/head unit, remote mountable. I have these on both my wifes Vulcan and my Vulcan. You could easily enough use this on the Venture and still monitor the bike CB via the aux input on the FTM 10. On her bike I interfaced a GPS and my bike has a Satellite radio feeding the aux port. They are dual band, also have AM/FM stereo receiver. RIght now they are about $325, usually R&L electronics will "sale special" them for $299 every few months I have an Alinco dual bander mounted on my Venture, with a Tiny Tracker for APRS tracking.

had you posted only 2 days earlier,,,, I just sold a Yaesu FT8900 quad band at Cave City Ky hamfest Saturday. Gave it away actually, $350.00. It is exactly what you want, 10m, 6m, 2m, and 70Cm.

As a tech you will find this radio to be quite a waste, at least until you upgrade to a General or better. That is if the FCC ever approves it for sale. No one has any, AES, HRO, R&L all say they have no idea when or if they'll ever get one. Expect it to be over $800.00 though!! As a tech, would a less expensive dual bander suit you as well? Lots of good dual band 2m/70Cm units around for under $100 used, or 300 new.

She rides a Road Star, the other chick rides a black HD. We dvr'd a couple episodes, of the 30 minute program there was roughly 21 minutes of advertising. After watching 2 or 3 episodes the advertising suddenly jumps out at you.

That somewhat resembles some of the first ones I made. Plain and simple. Don't recognize the ebay name though 2 of them did go to Maryland

Gary, I'm just like you, I'll make what I want, if I can, instead of buying it for less money.

For some reason I'm just reading this whole thing now, all you had to do was ask and those would've been on their way back to you, in the same box you shipped them in.

Tooling down the interstat heading home last Thursday, 70mph speed limit, I'm running 76 or so, a bright yellow SmartCar passed me and in a few seconds was out of sight. Saw it again on Friday morning, I gave up at 92 he drove off and left me

yessir, you did! Material for one is about $20.00, and then throw in a specified amount of labor,,,,,,,, you did good. -
super brace
Bob Myers replied to adventurer 08's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
About 3 years ago I was making these type braces and selling a few here, as Condor said the demand fell off to zero so I never made any spares. I may have one or two partially finished ones at work but it would be a shot in the dark finding them quickly, we moved the shop since I sold the last one. This was first one of the engraved ones I made, never clear coated or anodized it. http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i301/Bob_Myers/?action=view¤t=P4140013.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i301/Bob_Myers/P4140011.jpg -
Metal properties effect the RF less than diameter and the coating on the steel wire. RF travels around the outside of the conducting element, so if it is larger in diameter there can be a minimal effect there, but I would never thought an additional ¼ would still end up short. Try a cheap car antenna, they too are hardened stainless and plenty cheap with static/corona ball already on

There was a guy back last year who attempted to set a record of longest continuous ride without setting his feet down on the pavement. Had a trailer rigged with a lot of fuel and a pump to transfer it. Left Southern California and was doing really good until he got to Florida, cops pulled him over because the lights on his trailer quit. hes was roughly 250 miles from his destination in southern Florida. He had a catheter and wore depends

what are you using for test wire? Coat hanger? If so, make sure you strip the coating off where it goes into the load coil so it has a solid electrical connection with the setscrew. I used a piece of stainless filler wire from my Tig welder. with much difficulty I removed the ball from a car antenna and press fitted it onto my stainless rod. It'll do until I find a CB donor rod in one of the flea markets.

Trust me Mike, you are not the only person who has ever operated it backwards, I'd bet if the truth be told, several people here could admit to hooking one up with the patch cord on the antenna and the antenna to the tx side of the meter too. So, when operating as should what is your SWR reading?

You know, I hadn't thought about the swr meter being Kaput. I have one of those, looks pretty sitting on the shelf. As Dave said, do a real antenna and obtain another CB mount for the other side and put a better quality antenna there for the AM/FM

Yes, the SWR reading is reflected power, higher the reading, the more reflected power(less radiated output) In your continuity experiment, did you probe from center conductor of the coax after unscrewing it from matchbox, to the antenna mast itself? This should be an electrical connection between the two. If not the coax is open somewhere

Long drawn out procedure but,, I rolled my bike out in the drive, unhooked the CB cable from the match box and by using a different CB and SWR meter I set the stinger(my disappeared too so I started out waaaay long with a new one) for as low SWR as I could on channel20,checked channel 1 and was somewhat higher but not bad, checked 40 and it was the same as 1. Hooked the antenna back to the matchbox and sat the SWR meter(it also is a Field Strength meter as far away as I could where I could still be able to see the needle wiggle. Then while keyed I adjusted the matchbox for maximum needle deflection. May not be easiest method but I do know the antenna is as resonant as possible.

a good carb synch would be a great place to start. If it comes"on" when revved a little then at least one is set way low. Possibly POP thought he was cranking the idle up and turned the screw used to synch that carb to the one beside it. Easily done, don't question my source on this knowledge.

*Moron Alert* - EPA Issues New Rule for E-15 Use!
Bob Myers replied to Bobby G's topic in Watering Hole
You are correct, this article was just posted on JSOnline, however it is excerpt from an article the AMA and others published over 6 weeks ago -
Yea, I know the feeling too, I have never been able to spend more than about 4 days in a row there myself. Fortunately it is close enough to trailer the Vulcans down after work on Friday, ride all day Saturday and Sunday and drag back to Richmond Sunday night. Still don't get to do that often enough though. You'll be able to add 3 more states to your map when you get home!
-
It has to be a weight to tire size relationship. I put fatter tires on both of our Vulcans and the wife ask me first trip out on her tires why didn't I fix her bike long before now? I concur that fatter than stock on the Vulcan is much better. Fatter tire made it shake a little in the front end when riding slow straight with only one hand on mine, her tire is one size smaller and does not do that. I'm about to replace tires on my Venture, 18k on the rear, front has only 5k but it looks like a blister developing on the sidewall. My thought was to go fatter if I could, but your experience makes me want to go skinnier. Maybe that will eliminate the slow wobble it has when going straight
-
My question is"How can you only spend a week there"? Wife and I have been riding the area since she first started riding in 1993, and we find places every time that we missed before!

1st gen radio information
Bob Myers replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I like the way you think! I had not thought about doing a Y plug and plugging it in at the passenger post. I had considered running a shielded set all the way to the left control pad. As I understand the present circuit, a signal of 3 to 5 volts is applied to the center pin(at the plug on the bac of the CB) to mute the radio, then the CB audio is presented unchallenged. An op amp could be configured to turn on when an audio is detected from the 2m and deliver a signal to either the amp to mute or to a relay to provide a full siganl to mute. Not having played with an op amp in many years can one today deliver a 3 or 4 volt signal at a possible 250 milliamp potential? Wonder how much current is really needed? I'll do some experimenting today, I think there is a box here with some 555's in it and possibly Radio Shack will have an electronic relay on the shelf.- 76 replies
