Hi Earl,
Thanks for all the information, My email addy is SBaldridge@verizon.net I am going to do the oil change and the rear end lube change this morning. I did look at your fuse box upgrade shortly after I found this site and thatg is something that I want to do to my bike in the future also. My fusebox is still in working order but does show signs of wear. I am usually off on weekends as well, I have this weekend free to myself but the next 3-4 have events going on. Sometime we will have to get together for a maintenence check/ ride / or what have you. I am also going to take a closer look at the carbs today as I am only geting 25 MPG now. When you stand behind the bike it does smell rich. I looked over some posts here on low MPG and I see reference to the diaphrams and the rubber intake boots.
Ride safe, I will keep you posted on my progress.

Hi Scott,
Sorry it took so long to answer you, I work second shift. with over 73,000 miles on my 87' VR I have never heard a loud whine on the decel. The First Gens. do have a lot more tranny noise than my 1100 Honda V65 Magna. When you had it on the center stand was the noise comming from the back of the engine, tranny area or was it comming from the drive shaft, rear end area? Off the top of my head, If the noise is in the tranny area, try an oil and filter change. If the noise is in the rear end area, then drain and refill the rear end lube. There is also another problem area in the rear and that is the splines that are on the end of the drive shaft that mate to the rear Ring Gear. That is a much bigger job and requires removing the rear wheel and seperating the drive shaft from the rear end to grease the splines. I usually do this when I replace the rear tire. I have never had the dry spline problem myself, but most say it is a noisy affair that leads to damage to the DS splines and rear Ring Gear. Not hearing the noise myself, It is hard to say if what you are describing is "normal noise" or something worse. If it has been a while or the bike is pretty new to you, you may want to take care of the Items listed above and see if there is some improvment. Or we could meet up somewhere, switch bikes and see if the noise is the same on mine. Keep me posted on what you would like to do and I will help any way I can.
Ride safe,
Earl
