  1. gord, Nothing wrong with growing up in S'side I'm from Charlottetown but have lived in Hampshire for the last 26years on 5 acres. You haven't missed anything by not coming this summer, it has rained almost every day or been cold since May. Us Islanders get very testy when we can't get to the beach.:rotf:I'm leaving next week for a 6000km round trip to Minneapolis for a conference and have decided to ride. It will be my first real long distance trip and I'm pumped. It sounds like we have the same bike 1984 xvz12L ; mine just rolled up 90000km and I hope it has lots more.( at least 6000 more). I hope your illness isn't serious and when you get to the island give me a shout.
  2. Follow this link.Manuals are posted in the Tech Libraries. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3384
  3. Condor, Just sent a PM to have my name added to this buy. Rick
  4. According to another member here the serial number cutoff was "Anything after serial number 0001413 in the 1985 model, the 2nd gear problem was fixed. db" Are you looking to buy a Venture? The 2nd gear repair is within the realm of backyard mechanics and there is lots of information here on how to do it. I did mine last winter and it is awesome to have it and not be afraid to use it. I like to get up to speed fast and didn't enjoy skipping 2nd.
  5. Been there, done that. Had the same symptoms last year and put progressives in over the winter. No more bottoming out and the antidive even works. I used the full 1" spacer but plan on reducing it to 1/2" next time I do some maintenance. I also plan to change the fork oil from 15wt back to 10. I find the front a little stiff, especially on sharp bumps like potholes.:080402gudl_prv:
  6. Tiny84, Here is a link to the service manual in pdf format. http://labs.trunkful.com/8385servicemanual.pdf Juggler has hosted these manuals for download on his site just download it and save it on your harddisk. The idle adjustment is located between the carbs on the left side of the bike and has a plastic knob, don't mix it up with the sync screws which have slotted heads.
  7. Like Tommy said.. Factory idle is 1000rpm and below that the output is too low. The generator output is rpm dependant and is about 250 watts at 2500 rpm and max's out to 400 watts at 7000 rpm. Increase that idle and you'll be ok.
  8. Joe, The stock Yamaha clutch is plenty strong for the 85 ( same clutch as the V-Max) and the Barnett pressure plate is a copy of the stock plate used on the 83-85's. How many miles on your original clutch?
  9. Try this link for the 86-93 service manual. Juggler is hosting these manuals in .pdf format on his site. http://labs.trunkful.com/firstgenmanual.pdf
  10. My 84 has the same 'problem' but it always starts, just gives you bad feelings until it fires. I replaced my battery cables with heavier cables and cleaned connection points etc, but the bike still starts the same way. Had my starter out through the winter and replaced the end bearing and cleaned the armiture. The brushes were good as new and the armiture where the brush runs has almost no wear. Since it always starts I think I've done enough. The 4 brush starter is probably the way to go if this is really something you need to take care of.
  11. Todd, Here is a link to a scanned 83-85 owners manual. Its in pdf format. http://www.venturerider.org/private/firstgenowners.pdf There are also service manuals on here too, Go to Forums, 1st gen tech library and they are there.
  12. Reiney, There is a small steel ball that goes on the end of the spring. The spring goes in the valve then the ball then the whole thing goes into the housing and the screw locks it in place. The ball acts as a detent so you know if your in the right place either on or off. Hope this helps.
  13. Jake, Some of the guys here have had trouble with the clutch slave cylinder not releasing all the way due to crud in there. Your clutch may be good but slightly engaged causing slippage. You might want to remove the slave and clean it out, check the seals and then flush with new brake fluid and bleed. Just my 2cents.
  14. To clean the diaghrams I used soapy water and then when dry wipe them down with pure alcohol to remove any remaining traces of grease oil etc. I then applied the liquid tape to the areas on the diaghrams where there were holes or creases. I have redone them with the plasti dip yesterday and instead of just puting a dab on the hole, I used a brush and put a thin layer on the whole surface of the rubber diaghram and after that dried I rechecked and touched up a couple of spots. With the plastidip on now the rubber is flexible and you can hardly tell its on there since I applied a thin layer. My biggest concern is how long it will stay there and if it will peel off like the liquid tape did. There have been posts where Plastidip was recommended but I can't find them now. I agree that this is probably not a good place to use silicone. BTW: How do you spell diaghram??
  15. Hey Ventureriders I patched up my diagphrams with liquid electrical tape last year and they worked great, however when I took the carbs apart last weekend to clean them I found the liquid tape was peeling off. I heard that some guys are using Plastidip for this and was wondering if it lasts longer. I know the real solution is new ones but 2-3 hundred bucks are not that easy to find and this Forum is 'poor man tips and fixes.'
  16. Toolman came through with a valve cover. :cool10: He shipped it Monday and I just got it. Its perfect other than yellow clear coat and this means I can get the 84 together this weekend. I'm anxious to try out my Randya type 2nd gear repair and the new progressives up front. Thanks again Toolman. and Thanks to WilCruise for the offer. Ventureriders helping Ventureriders!
  17. Thanks for the tip on seal All Markcarl and Toolman I've sent you a PM. I didn't think I'd see such a quick response but this site is amazing. Thanks
  18. This should be posted under Most Embarassing Moments. Anyone have a valve cover they can sell me and ship to Prince Edward Island Canada asap. I was installing the engine on my 84 after doing the 2nd gear repair and it rolled off my jack and cracked the front valve cover. I got the engine in OK after that noticed the crack when I started bolting the side rail on. I want to put the rest of the bike together next weekend and so I'm looking for help. There are some on ebay so I can try that if no one here has one. Thanks Ventureriders.
  19. Fixit, What a coincidence, My gaskets and seals and new metal water pump impeller arived this afternoon from Flatout Motorcycles in Indianapolis. I'll be taking some days off next week to start putting things back together. I thought I'd get some comments on using my snowblower to separate the transmission shaft but I guess everyone must think I have thin skin. putting things back together. Rick
  20. Allan, I can't begin to understand your grief and loss at this time but have passed on a prayer for you that God will sustain you through this difficult trial.
  21. Here are some pics from my second gear repair. #1 is the worn thrust washer and retainers. #2 is the second gear dogs after reshaping them and the gear that it mates with. #3 is my version of a hydraulic press to disassemble the tranny shaft. #4 shows the retainers in place #5 is a wide angle view of my improvised press. "Canadian winters do strange things to the mind." We didn't have any snow this winter so I needed to use the tractor for something!
  22. Fixit, I think what you're calling a thrust washer is actually a retainer. There should be 2 of these C shaped retainers holding the assembly together by fitting in grooves in the transmission shaft. Behind these is a flat thrust washer which also wears and should be replaced. I have just finished replacing mine and am waiting on gaskets assembling the engine. I am also trying to polish my case covers and hope to have er done and ready for Spring. I have a extra washer which I can send you if you send me your address. http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp This link shows the parts. 5. is the thrust washer and 6 are the retainers although they are called Washers, special shape here. This is a great thread and I've picked up some good tips while I do the same job. I have a couple of pictures to post when I get my laptop going again. Good Luck:080402gudl_prv:
  23. I also bought tires from G.Bourque's in Moncton NB. Mine were Dunlop D404 for my 84 and they cost $198.98 for the pair and 29.84 tax for a grand total of $228.74. A friend picked them up and brought them to PEI for me saving shipping costs. I installed and balanced them myself. The best deal I could get local was about $50 more for the pair. I put a little over 8000km (4800 miles) on last year and the rear is about 40-50% gone and the front looks like new.
  24. Ya, I wanted the TourMaster Advanced Sport but they don't have it in XXL so the Fusion it will be. NewEnough's prices are great so if it doesn't fit I can still sell it here for more than I'll pay for it. Thanks for the feedback.
  25. Sarge, The jacket I mentioned is on Closeout at newenough for $62, I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this particular jacket. The bike shops here don't carry much stock in gear except for the Harley dealer where there is more clothing than riding gear.
