  1. I'll echo the comments on G. Bourques's in Moncton NB. I got a rear Dunlop Elite3 for my 1st gen for about $130 Canadian last year. I have 14000km on it now and it has lots of miles left.
  2. Just an update for anyone watching this thread. Bought a pair of front rotors on ebay for about $70.00 including shipping. They measure 8.8mm and 8.9mm. My old rotors were closer to 8.3mm so I changed both. My bike has 101,000km on it. So To make a long story short I rode about 100 miles last night and both rotors are true and my pulsing is gone. YAHOOO!
  3. The washer is on the end of the main transmission shaft and is held in tension by a large spring. I don't think the use of 2nd gear affects the wear of this washer but 2nd gear is the first thing to go when the washer wears due to the spacing of gears and dogs in the tranny. Its only the 83,84 and early 85's that have this potential problem but you might as well enjoy all the power in every gear while it lasts. (my 2nd gear started to jump at around 50,000 miles. If you're concerned about this its a nice winter project to replace the washers and there is lots of information on here to help. Good Luck:thumbsup2: I just checked your profile and see you have an 85. The cutoff serial number for this soft washer is posted here somewhere and you can compare it to your bike.
  4. Replaced mine last year at 93000km (56000 miles) 1984 Venture Standard.
  5. Congradulations mtman, Glad you finally got her running. Enjoy your new obsession!!!
  6. Well, I decided not to reverse the front wheel so I removed the front caliper from the fork tube put a couple of old brake pads in place of the rotor and secured the whole thing with the brake lines attached and then went for a short ride. It turns out that my left front rotor is bad. The runout on this rotor was .5mm and as skydoc_17 says the limit is .15mm. With this rotor not used the rear braking is smooth as silk. So the good news is I found the cause of the pulsing brake but the bad news is I need a left front rotor. Guess I need to start a new thread " Left Front Rotor needed for 84 XVZ12L ":hurts: Rick
  7. I understand your comment Squeeze. and for everyone else. " Don't try this at home. "
  8. Squeeze, I was only thinking of reversing the front wheel to check the rotors, certainly not for more than a short test run. I might try that tonight. KingSizer, Runout is a measurement of the deflection in the rotor as the wheel is rotated. There are dial guages available to measure this. I don't know the specs for these brakes but a small amount of runout is normal. In my case the pulsing starts after the brakes are applied for a few seconds so the rotor may be warping as it heats up.
  9. Squeeze, I guess I'll disconnect the left front caliper to determine which rotor. Hmmmm - I have a silly question, Can the front wheel be put on backwards? This would exchange the front rotors with minimal work and I would know if its a front rotor this way. What do you think?
  10. When using the linked brake on my 84 Venture after a few seconds of normal braking it begins to pulse similar to a warped rotor. I have replaced the pads and bled the front and rear and the Antidive and the problem continues. I have checked the runout on the rotors and it is less than 1/2 a millimeter on the front and almost none on the rear. Any suggestions? Is it possible that the rear master cylinder return hole is partially plugged ? My next step is disconnecting the front caliper to see if the rear alone is OK. Rick
  11. Rates are all over the map in the Maritimes. I was quoted locally anywhere from 600-900 dollars for PL/PD $1M liability and no collision or theft. I ended up buying from RBC Insurance 3 years ago online for about $375. This year it dropped to $325 for the same coverage. A lot of bikers here use Primmum but I found RBC a bit cheaper.
  12. hdroyer, If you want a matched set send me your address and I'll send you a boot. I scored a set of mirrors last fall on ebay and don't need the extra. Great idea to adapt standard mirrors to the venture. Stock mirrors have been getting high prices on ebay. Rick
  13. Thanks Carl but that is the service manual. I found the owners manual on my old computer but it is a 6.8meg pdf file and too big to add here as an attachment. Rick
  14. The following link used to bring up a scanned copy of the 1st gen owners manual but it doesn't seem to work any more. http://www.venturerider.org/private/firstgenowners.pdf A new member just contacted me to get it , so if anyone has a good link please reply. Thanks Rick
  15. Hey Blueblood, Here is a link to the 1st gen service manuals thanks to juggler: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=3384 Also a link to a thread where Fixit3456 did the 2nd gear repair following Randya's method. I did mine a year ago and it was sweeeet having a strong 2nd gear. As Squeeze said winding it out in 2nd is Special. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2410 Good Luck Rick
  16. Chocking, I ran 404's on my 84 Venture and got about 7000miles (12000 km)on the rear with the cords showing, The front lasts twice as long. I'm running the Elite 3 on the rear now with a 404 on the front and the handling is fine. I have 6000 miles (10000km) on the E3 and it is hardly showing any wear, looks like it will go a long way yet. Had the bike out today for the first ride of the year and she rolled over 98,000 km. Soon she'll hit 00000.0:cool10: Wonder if it will seem like new then? Good Luck Rick
  17. dkaiser, The panel is available from flatoutmotorcycles.com for $38.00. I didn't check the louvers. I have a right turn signal you can have and the left too, although it is broken. The right one had a small hole which was patched but it doesn't show so if you want them let me know. I could send a picture tonight if you want. Rick:080402gudl_prv:
  18. It sure does and worst of all...... I can't blame anyone else!
  19. Bumped.. Thought I'd bump this up before checking out ebay. I pulled my bike out of storage today to start a couple of jobs it needs before riding season. Well I removed the luggage and found the back half of the left saddlebag broken with a large piece on the floor. It must have been hit by me over the winter but I don't remember doing it. Anyway if someone has this for an 84 and wants to get rid of it I'll take it off your hands for a reasonable amount . Thanks Rick
  20. Kurt, These bikes will foul plugs if the choke is on too long, I'd recommend replacing the plug wires and ends and plugs. It made a huge difference in mine. The popping could be related to an exhaust leak or intake leak. These engines don't like to run without the air box cover on so check that and make sure your gas is fresh. The valves are probably OK with the low mileage on your bike, My 84 has 60,000miles and the valves are still in spec. We also like pictures so show off your hard labour. Rick
  21. I use the magnetic clipons and have used them for 2 years riding with both a 3/4 and full-face helmet without visors. I did loose them once in a strong crosswind wearing the 3/4. Turned around and found them at the side of the pavement without a scratch. Not sure if I'd recommend them but they work for me.
  22. I'm planning to replace the brake caliper seals on my 84 Standard and when looking up the part numbers on Yamaha's website it shows "part # 31A-W0047-00-00 Quantity 2 " for the rear seal kit. I checked Flatout's and it shows the same thing. Anyone know why it shows 2 sets for the rear caliper? but only 1 set for each front caliper. Thanks
  23. Was -20 C here this morning and supposed to stay cooold all week. A week ago yesterday I had the bike out for an hour it was -2 that day but sunny and the roads were clear.
  24. Don, Check the oil in the final drive unit for metal. Last year I had a clicking noise at the left rear and found metal in the final drive oil. When I dissassembled the unit the pinion gear had several broken teeth. Follow this link to my post last spring. Post #15 has pictures of the damaged pinion gear. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8510&highlight=noisy+drive Rick
