Does anyone have an ecopy of the 86 VR user manual?

Heading to Tennessee in 2 weeks with some friends. My 84 has 68,000 miles on it. Will put another 5-6000on this trip. The most I've done in one trip is about 2400 miles. I'm trusting that the old girl still has it in her.

Moving TCI to airbox

Well, I tackled this job last night. Ended up removing the battery, the glove box cover and radio cover, was able to remove enough screws from the fairing to get the 2 inner fairings off. This allowed me to remove the battery box bracket and coil bracket and then I could rotate the TCI to access the screws. These proved to be seized and I ended up using a hacksaw blade and vice-grips to cut the 2 mounting tabs off. With the TCI out the cabling was a perfect fit to the new location on top of the air breather. Spent a couple of hours and got it done. I took the top cover off the TCI and there is some trace of moisture inside. The 2 connectors were somewhat corroded and I cleaned them and coated them with an contact cleaner. Next rainy day I plan to disassemble the unit and check the solder joints and diodes. Whew! -

Thanks for the ideas, I may try paintermans trick of cutting the TCI out since I sure won't be putting it back in there. I am doing a road trip in a couple of weeks from PEI to Tennessee. Will be doing the Dragon and other noteable roads in that area, also planning on the Wheels of Time museum. Looking forward to it and hoping the bike is troublefree! So far, new oil and filter, greased driveshaft, changed rear drive oil, new plugs last fall, 2 new tires, brakes new last year. -

Thanks Twigg, I was afraid of that. My bike misses some when its damp out and the tach doesn't work. After a few minutes it all clears up and she runs like new. I suspect the TCI is collecting moisture and shorting out. Rick -
I am looking at moving my TCI to the airbox but I can't see how to remove it from the stock location. I have the battery box out and don't want to remove the fairing. Can anyone tell me how this thing is mounted? Thanks

It's not just cagers that pull stupid moves. I was out for the first time this spring yesterday and was on a secondary road with a 60kph limit. I was behind a car and a Hyabusa was behind me and laying back several car lengths, Anyway when the speed zone ended I checked the busa in my mirror and he was still there so I signalled and began passing the car and when I reached the drivers door the busa was passing me like I was standing still. This was on a 2 lane road with no paved shoulder, If I wandered to the left a foot we would have tangled. I was tempted to go after him but decided it wasn't worth it, as he may not last long with his bad habits and a bike that powerful. Rick

Just got back from Germany and they are paying about $1.60Euros per liter which works out to $8.70 for a US gallon and $10.20 for a Canadian gallon. I was on the Autobahn and while going 100mph and higher was still getting passed by BMW's Audi's and Porches. I think thay adjusted their budgets to accommodate whatever the cost of fuel is which is probably what we'll do to. The Autobahn was fun but you sure trash your fuel economy with those high speeds! Hobbies, Who has time for hobbies? Anyway I like to fish and the last few years have taken up downhill skiing, I don't do either as much as I'd like but then again I'm not on the bike as much as I would like either. Still have to work for a few more years! I do need a new helmet so $159 would be sweet. Rick

I don't have one but am considering it. One concern I have is comfort, I'm 5'11'' and pushing 260lbs, and haven't tried one of these fjr's out for size. I have done 12 hours days on my 84 Venture with a sheepskin on the factory seat, Could you do that on the FJR1300? How many mpg does the fjr give you? Rick

Trader, I bought an E3 for my 84 a couple of years ago from G. Bourque's in Moncton NB. It was $125 Canadian and I installed and balanced it myself. You need to find another dealer. Cheap, replacement air cleaners - are there?

The original resistors are 10k ohms but the replacement ends from NGK have 5k ohm resistors. The resistance value is not critical but if the resistor is open circuit then the spark will be weak or it may arc somewhere else. Rick

Thanks for the drag racing tips Jean, Don't think I'm ready to drop the clutch at 5000 rpm yet. Anyway When this little race happens I'll update you all. Didn't mean for this to be a Harley bash as we both enjoy getting our digs in a little bit. I think he rides a Dyna Wide Glide or something like that. He has a lot of fun putting down my 'antique' Venture. By the way, Pass on my prayers for Earl's speedy recovery and keep him up to date on Venturerider happenings. Rick

Thanks for the support. I'll let you know how it went if it all comes together. It may be the end of June before I can make it happen. I am not so concerned about beating the Harley as seeing what this old Venture is capable of. Somewhere I read that it can do 12 sec 103mph in the 1/4. But I am a rookie and slightly overweight so That will affect my times.

A buddy at work with a Harley wants to go against me at the local drag strip on amateur night. Neither of us has run the track before but it might prove interesting. $20 a bike and all the runs that can be fitted in. I am wondering what rpm's would be most efficient to shift at. I expect 6500-7000 would work but looking for pointers. Not sure what model his bike is but I'll have to find out as it may be a sleeper! Any other pointers are welcome as this is new to me. The track doesn't open for a few weeks yet so I may have to find a quiet road to practise. My bike is bone stock except for the new diagphrams, needle shim mod, carb sync, MAc mufflers and new paint. I have an E3 on the rear with about 50% tread left. I read somewhere that it helps to drop the air pressure in the rear tire as well as the rear suspension. Fire away.

5Bikes, I put progressive springs in a couple of years ago and saw a big improvement in the suspension travel and less dive while braking hard. Then last year when replacing my brake pads disconnected the antidives to see if the braking would improve. I haven't noticed any difference in the dive and only a slight improvement in the braking but decided to leave them disconnected. I purchased a couple of metric bolts about 1/2" long and put them where the banjo bolt came out. I say try it and judge for yourself. Rick

Looks good on ya Randya!!! I need to do the same, running about 265 now and just can't seem to find time to exersize but seem to find all kinds of time to EAT. Anyway keep it up or off, I guess.

That's my plan, I have time to take everything apart and then decide on whether the bushings are worn enough to replace. I have a set of good calipers and should be able to measure them. I plan to buy the Yamaha seals as there seems to lots of complaints on the aftermarket ones. I only want to do this once.

I'm heading to Vegas for a training course in a couple of weeks and was thinking about renting a bike for a day. Can anyone recommend a rental place that will not nickel and dime me to death. Thought I'd take a run from Vegas to Lake Havasu to see the London Bridge. I've never rented a bike before so any tips will be appreciated.

Is there a way to measure the bushings for wear or is it best to just replace them? I already have progressives in and what a difference they made to the bike. My original springs were way shot, bottomed out on any bump. I will have the fairing off as they will be getting a new coat of paint so the fork tubes should be easily accessable for this job. I found the tech article Freebird made up and plan to follow it as best I can. Thanks for the tips.

Planning to replace the fork seals in my 84 and not sure what parts to order. I will need the oil seal 26H-23145-00-00 and the dust seal 26H-23144-00-00, Is there any other parts to consider replacing? Thanks

Those are nice colours and the design looks great. My painter likes using pearl in the paint so mine may sparkle too! Still would like to see some black and silver(or black & gold). Rick
