Your the slowest one around! Just drive a little slower than the traffic around you. My brother in law calls speeders his "insurance". Friend just a speeding ticket $345, Ouch!

Safety first, these are important! 1. Steering stem bearings, regreasing and correct setting. 2. Tires that are not flattened out in the center. Tires on 1st Gen must have a round profile. A friend put new Kenda's on front and rear and it was dangerous. DO NOT BUY! Avons he bought fixed his bad wander. 3. Flushing brake and clutch systems often, especially in wetter climates. Sludge builds up and water corrodes. 4. Cleaning electrical connections. Battery cables, and all connectors should have contact cleaner (brake cleaner works too) sprayed in them at least every other year. My desert bike does not have this problem but all of the Midwest bikes we have bought have corroded connectors. 5. I have had several bikes driven to me with little of no air in the tires. Or no tread left. 6. Oil changes, is this a last thought? I've had the oil sight glass so dirty so many times I think it's full too... Drain it and it's so black it resembles heavy carbon... 7. Hand and Foot Controls at such a bad angle or so uneven it's a wonder the bike was drivable. 8. Lights/signals/horns not working, How safe is this? 9. Non-functioning brakes. All go and no stop??? 10. Safety inspections: I've seen state inspectors give it an OK without checking anything! 11. Please go out there right now and inspect your bike, your on only 2 wheels. 12. Can't do it yourself? Dealers too expensive? Do a posting on Craigslist. I've gotten many jobs this way.

I had an oil leak in the cavity where the slave cylinder sits. I replaced 2 seals on the gear shifter arm and the clutch push rod. Also the o-ring on the neutral (& 1-5 gear) electrical contact switch. I did not do the slave cylinder when I did second gear. Boy was I surprised how bad it was. I only have 22k miles (but 25 years). I've previously flushed the clutch fluid 3 times in 5k miles. It was dirty again. The clutch slave cylinder was filled with sludge, and the aluminum was corroding inside. There are 2 seals I bought from Yamaha ($15). I carefully cleaned everything and sanded the ID. Getting the inner seal on was the hardest parts, very tight fit. Greased everything first. I reflushed for the 4th time. Easiest flushing I've ever done. Only put 50 miles on it. Hoping for no leaks. If in doubt do it. -
All is metal to metal, nut to nut, no washers. Can't remember how I oriented the washer positively, but 2 friends (both have 88's) say my bike steers well. It's not a GSX handler though. Ventures frame, forks and swing arm are spindly compared other/newer bikes so it will never be my mountain road racer.

Battery Cables??
5bikes replied to Bill W.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I found removing the shrink tubing at the cable ends and cleaning with baking soda gets the old ones back in good shape. Grease (any or dielectric) the connector and replace shrink tubing (Harbor Frt). Check the connectors at the starter solenoid on left side of the battery too, (and at the starter motor) -
I only use a torque wrench on head bolts. It's a fell thing. I hate overtightened bolts. I use grease on almost all bolts so disassembly is easy, reduces stripping and eases starting. I teach this to all my friends learning to work on bikes. 100 ft lbs on wheel axles is way too much. Small bolts use less pressure, as the bolt/nut gets larger tighten more. Going into aluminum? Grease/anti-seeze for sure and less pressure. Yes I have lost a few noncritical bolts/nuts but always from forgetting to do them not from under tightening. I've worked on 125+ vehicles. Always double check you tightened all fasteners. Tighten same/surrounding bolts evenly. Brakes, axles, pivot points are critical. If you don't have "the feel" use a torque wrench. I had a piece of **** BMW K1200LT. The swing arm 14mm (head size) bolts had 125+ ft lbs! Broke 2 sockets trying to loosen them. Had to use a 1/2" drive heavy duty thick wall impact socket, 15" breaker bar and a 2 foot long cheater bar to get them loose. My wife came out after they cracked loose asking if I was ok!!!

to setting the correct bearing pressure of any bike I've owned. I cleaned and regreased everything with moly. Reassembled and tightened everything (triple trees, forks, brace, wheel and brakes) then did the 2 large nuts. Front wheel off the ground. I like to have the steering when pushed side to side (5# pressure?) move a little freely so it barely bounces off the stops. Tightened too much the steering does not reach the stops, too little bearing pressure and the steering swings way over against the stops and bounces 1/4 way back. Smooth action thru out the travel is important. You have to tighten both washers and the large top nut on top of the top triple tree to test. Then I grab the lower end of the forks and push forward and rearward hard. There must not be any slop at the steering stem. I think the nuts as Dan said is right but my Venture does not have the wobble washer. I bought one is case I want to do it again later. By the way the front tire is even more critical. It MUST have a rounded profile.

Is 60:scorched: and Sunny here in El Paso this Friday afternoon. Was 40 this morning. 3-4 weeks ago we were at Cattlemen's in Fabens we had a bad meal. We got cold beer:happy65:, charcoaled burgers and a "warm" tour planned for you when you get here. We're retired so ready when you are.

This is as far west as they are going. Wife and I are putting them up over night. I hope the weather stays good, this is the windy season in the SW. 25-55 mph often. Any one else see them?

Behind the chrome right side grill just behind the radiator. Two philips screws hold it on. Usually the electrical connections are loose or need cleaning and tightening. 2 sets of connectors. Then check connectors on the back of the gauges. Check all grounds there too.

My early 90's GSX Suzuki's have a much stouter frame than my 84 Venture. Most bikes have gotten better. We put a front Kenda on a friend's 88 and it had dangerous handling. Front ends, (forks and frames) and tires are critical. I replaced a flattened out front tire and it quit wandering too. 1st Gen rear ends seem less critical but the swing arms are the smallest I've ever seen for this large a bike. I'm reserving my Venture for Interstates/2 up as it was intended not the twisties.

About 40 years ago. She said If I didn't teach her it was the big "D". Yes dear:bowdown:. Then we have 2 kids, one each for our 2 bikes. Only 2 drivers so I get a vasectomy. She drives off and on for years. I buy her more bikes:mo money: Since she retires, we decide we need a tourer, bought a BMW :mo money:she hated it :happy65:so did I. Now she has her own pristine 98 Virago 1100 but never uses it:think: She will get on the back of the Venture when I But get her on one the 2 Gixxers and she is scary fast Can't live with um, can't live without um

Had them on a cage, tire leaked. Had to remove the tire and tank water test to find the leak. It was the cap, poorly manufactured seam/joint. Nearly new. Threw the other 3 in the trash too.
