  1. Markel Insurance or BikeLine.com. Good luck
  2. With only 22k miles my 84 needs a stator. Anyone got a good used one or where I can get the best price for new one. And yes it is fried. New battery, good connections thruout. When I did 2nd gear it was black on one side. I have a spare regulator-rectifier and it does the same, no charge. Just hoping then.... Thanks
  3. Spark plug tip color Black = rich, move needles further out the back of the slide, mpg Tan, gray or clean = about right, mpg 40+ White = lean, move needle in, mpg high 40's Do in this order: With clean carbs!!! 1. Check diaphrams 2. Set pilot screws (idle mixture) to 2-2.5 turns 3. Do carb synch 4. Check plugs 5. Adjust needles, may have to do several times... Got 47 mpg going 65mph, 2 up last week. Checked plugs, just a little white. Little lean = hotter combustion, more power, less pollution.
  4. I replaced all the seals, o-rings and gaskets a second time after doing the 2nd gear fix. Clutch rod seal, gear position o-ring, shifter seal, and middle gear cover. No leaks now. Only this middle gear cover has to come off. NOT the entire engine. Also check the 2 wiring harness rubber gaskets from the stator cover. If you have to remove the stator cover, replace the gasket, clean surfaces and use RTV.
  5. If you can't get the cap on the nipple coming out of the intake port, cap off the hose. Use a bolt and hose clamp. I just super glued the seam on the YICS chamber when I had the bike all apart doing the 2nd gear fix. And kept it. I get 45-50 mpg, thinking the YICS works. Later 1300's don't get as good of mpg without it.
  6. I've removed and greased the front and rear suspensions, replaced the front and rear tires, monitor tire and suspension air pressures and my 84 now handles much better. But today it's in the 90's and the tar snakes are "wet". As we turned out of a picnic rest area I drove over a parallel to the road tar snake, for a very brief period it felt like my SO and I were going to go down. None of my other bikes do this. Any one else have this problem?
  7. But learning to fly is 20 times harder. And 20 times more expensive. :mo money:It was my goal to learn and I did in in my 40's. The first solo you'll never forget. Congratulations are in order.
  8. Trace out the wiring. Look for a bad connection. Many people do not do a good job of making tight, waterproof connections with real terminals. The lower you keep the temps the longer the engine will last. Wet, humid areas play havic on electrical. Another reason I like the desert southwest.
  9. I get disappointed if I don't get 45 mpg. Think how much cleaner the air is, your much heavier your wallet is, how much further you can go on a tankful, how much longer the engine and oil will last (cleaner burning), and reducing foreign oil imports if we all did this (ON ALL VEHICLES)! Why I'm I the slowest vehicle on the road going the speed limit?
  10. Or cruise control. Your gripping too tight, relax. I use my left hand also to hold the throttle.
  11. Mine never leaked anywhere. Remove the short brake line entirely off the bike. Plug the hole in the antidive with any plastic plug, I used a tire valve cap. With the brake line off only residual oil may drip out. If it leaks after removing the brake line there is seals or oil O-rings under the anti-dive that will have to be replaced. Good time to replenish or replace fork oil.
  12. Braking is far better, levers is more firm, faster stops. I added a couple more lbs of air pressure to the front forks to reduce dive. 2nd bike I did this to. Won't go back. You still "dive" with the anti-dives, and braking is scary. Take the short brake hose off from the anti-dive and use the single banjo bolt from the anti-dive on the brake caliper. Get ride of them.
  13. Take the right throttle twist grip off. Clean the handlebar and grease everything that moves. Lubricate the throttle cables with light oil. Adjust the cable tensions so there is about 1/8" slop. Make sure everything turns easy. May have to clean lubricate and adjust throttle linkages at the carbs too. Bet your cruise works correctly now, fixed 2 Ventures doing this.
  14. Don't know when to quit, every one gets better than the last. 2nd gear fixed, 2 sets of driving lights, and additional stop lights head the list.
  15. Brutal spring winds in the desert Southwest are a norm. Though this year has not been near as windy as prior years, 20-50 mph is not unusual for months. Last year started mid Feb, ended in early JUNE. With the dust blowing it can be hard too see across the street. Paint and windshields get pitted bad in just a few years. I avoid those days outside but then I can being retired. But then again we ride year around.... Maineac I bet you do too Oh by the way I get ticked if any of my 5 bikes don't get 45 mpg!!!
  16. For thousands less!!!

    WORK

Better than college (no money), than as a kid (too much incertainy), between jobs (knew I had to go back). Retirement= No stress, got money, kids grown, get along with wife to best ever, 5 bikes, more friends now than in my entire prior life, more fun, can ride any day, no jerky bosses, still healthy, everything paid for, make fewer stupid mistakes, too busy to get a job, hated work. Thanks for continuing to work to pay for my social security.
  18. Out of my price range!!!! I took my friends with 24k miles (that's why I know how much) and cleaned them up for future use. Took 4 hours and heavy pounding with a 4 pound hammer get the old one out, Won't do that again for FREE!
  19. They are not set right. Did you synch them, floats set right, any plugged ports or jets, diaphrams in good condition, everything put back together right? I would get help from someone (like ME) who knows how to work on carbs. Set everything by the shop/service manual. Throttle cables don't cause your problem. Loading up usually means running rich, not working under 2k rpm usually means low speed jets plugged. How long did it sit?
  20. The starter button activates the starter solenoid and turns the lights OFF when pushed. There is way too much current for these tiny contacts in my opinion. They are exposed to weather and dirt. Use contact cleaner or brake cleaner to periodically clean them. They can be carefully disassembled and the contacts cleaned with fine sandpaper for a longer lasting fix. Dielectric grease helps too. I took my lights out of this circuit and this switch only runs a DPDT relay coil for all the lights.
  21. the weakest link? For 40+ years it has always been the tires to me. Ever see a Mexican pickup truck over loaded? Very common here on the border. The suspension is bottomed out and the tires buldged out? Which goes first? Metal or rubber? (And he's got power steering to boot!)
  22. Stock tire load capacity rating 71=760 lbs, I've gone to 77 rating = 908#'s 1/2 bike= 380# (could be more), stuff in trunk & saddle bags=75, me 160 (some of my weight on front), wife 200 (be careful here, clothes, purse, and kitchen sink), extras added to bike=20, total =835. A 71 rated tire won't get it. Even at max. tire inflation. Kenda Kruz, Metzler 880 for example are 77's. I had a 4 passenger plane, but would only fly 3 people, I'm very conscience of weight. Weight is a motorcycle's enemy too.
  23. I have a pilot's license. Anything (10ft?) off the ground is FAA territory. You'll need a (Recreational?) license, then there's local laws, traffic laws, safety inspections, safety requirements to be ground licensed. There's training requirements, physicals, insurance (air and ground) and on and on..... Where you going to land/takeoff at work in a city? So you work on a farm or at an airport, OK.
  24. Lower triple clamp is aluminum. Sure looked like steel. Bet they all are!
  25. She's got a garage door opener FOB next to her easy chair, DAHHHH!! Now all I need is loud pipes so she can hear me drive up the block, so I don't have to push that horn button, don't want to hurt my fingers....
