  1. When I had my Honda VTX, a member on the forum I was on, made a stand for the members also. It was good quality too and always enjoyed it. I like the one Carbon1 has also. Heck we only had a 22 degree wind chill lately, but I'm still riding. http://pepsx.com/catalog/images/stand_image.jpg
  2. 2nd gen. yes. Didn't think about night time riding. Good point. Now if I can just figure out where to put this LOL:
  3. Kevin, You are absolutely right about that. I have mine set to pretty much the same as you. As a matter of fact one of the mechanics that test rode the bike after they got the clutch replaced thought the suspension was too soft. A head mechanic just told him that is a personal preference thing. It is truly like a couch on wheels. Very comfy. I bought the same H-D pump you did. It is actually made by Progressive. The Progressive one w/out the H-D logo is about $10 cheaper from what I remember.
  4. Don't know what the lights look like inside. Are they just bulbs? If so, anyone think about tinkering with them enough to figure out how to wire led's instead? In bright daylight, sometimes the lights are hard to see. These would be like the neutral, O/d, etc...what I call jewel lights. If they are bulbs, I would think led's would be much brighter.
  5. Kelly, Looks like his price just dropped too. Now it is $140.50, free shipping & GPS bag on the Q2. If only Christmas was here already.
  6. Friend of mine recently bought a refurb off e-bay. Seems like a pretty good unit. Normally sells for around $300 if I remember right and they are selling them for $110 + free shipping. I got to check it out while riding and works pretty well. One question I have about this unit or any GPS for that matter is say I want to go from Indy to South Dakota, but want to take specific roads, can I program the GPS to go only on the roads I want to go on instead of having the GPS pick the route for you? I see they have the Quest2 now also. Garmin lists it for $750.00. The same place on e-bay sells the refurb for $185 if I remember right. Garmin didn't have the price listed on just the Quest. I was reading all the stuff on the Garmin web-site, but for things like what I am asking, its' all greek to me. Thanks.
  7. Don't know if it didn't have a chance to bake on or what have you, but it loosened up fairly easily.
  8. I'll try tonight to loosen it some. I have ridden w/ it a couple days. No oil leaks. I have been checking the oil level window while on its' centerstand and it has stayed at a consistent spot. Thanks.
  9. So the manual says you can use a torque wrench to torque it to spec. Well I tried it and there isn't enough room between the oil filter and the plate you bolt the rectifier too (even though the picture in the manual shows differently). If the plate was moved maybe 2-3" to the left, it would line up. How do you tighten your oil filter? Do you worry about torquing it to spec? I just used one of those rubber strap things and once the oil filter wouldn't move anymore I stopped trying to tighten it. I didn't want to dent it in any way.
  10. Well you all faired much better than me. My shifter fell off weekend before last and had I used more common sense it would have potentially saved me a bunch of $$$ because I had to have my clutch replaced. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28193 Update too. When I picked up the bike from the dealer. Another mechanic (don't remember if he was one of the 2 that said EBC was junk) said shouldn't have to replace stock clutch for at least 100k and the EBC kit should last about 100k. Also got to take home a couple souveniors. I post pics later, but basically looks like someone took black spray paint and painted the clutches. Only 1 of them I could still see metal. Glad I went ahead and paid for the metal and fiber clutches. They were originally telling me to just order the fibers. I didn't feel comfortable w/ that so I ordered it all.
  11. Found the post Checked Yamaha's website for the #'s they are posting for '09 models. They state 97hp & 89 ft lb. So Just barely w/in 10 ft lb torque.
  12. What do you mean by strongest? If you are talking HP and torque, the VTX is not. A few years ago I was in Louisville and did one of those dyno's in a trailer. A couple Ventures went ahead of me. From what I remember not that close on the HP but on torque it seemed to come w/in 10 ft.lb. I think I have the #'s posted on another forum. I'll go digging around for it.
  13. Oh sure. Now you post this. LOL
  14. Another guy mentioned that since my bike had 59k miles on it, he thought that it was a long life for the clutch anyway. I would think if a bike is well maintained, the clutch (out of the factory) would last as long as the bike. Another guy commented that if you are a careful rider, things seem to break down more than if you are an aggressive rider. Not sure how, but that is what he thought. So riding to our destination, I got to ride passenger on the Roadliner and also passenger on a Goldwing. I will tell you what, I about fell asleep on the Goldwing. Pretty comfy. If I didn't have my contacts in, I probably would have. LOL The guy w/the Roadliner let me ride it the last 25 miles to our destination to save some dignity while he rode on the back of the Goldwing. Not a bad ride either. So one of the guys at our gathering was going to let me ride his Venture home. We live about an hour apart. I just wasn't sure when I could return it. He needed it for work and offered for me to ride his wife's V-Star home. Talked to my wife before I left the place and we returned it today. For your viewing pleasure. LOL http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/P1010038.jpg If you can't tell, that is a rose on the tank. I just bought a scorpion helmet w/ the dark tint face shield. So I was covered head to toe. Unless you have x-ray vision you wouldn't be able to tell I was a guy. So I passed a few harley's at an intersection that were waiting at the stop light. I even got a nod from one of the women riders. All I could do was laugh and think what would they think if they saw my face (gottee and all) and riding a bike w/ a rose on the tank. I would have loved to see the expressions on their face (or any biker's for that matter). LOL Now what would have topped it off is if I was wearing my wife's helmet. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/04152007H.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/04152007I.jpg
  15. Yup. It's a Honda. I traded my '04 Honda VTX 1300S Retro for the Venture. S just stand for spoke rims and Retro is for the fender style. I never had any mechanical issues with it. One of the guys I was talking w/ this weekend had an 1800 VTX that he later traded it in for a roadliner. He talked about his slipping too. This is an older picture of it. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/c147.jpg This is from last year. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/img_6193.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/04152007E.jpg
  16. I burned my clutch this weekend. I was riding on a highway and we were close to Terre Haute IN. We were actually heading into Terre Haute for breakfast. So I was slowing down for the exit ramp. Went to downshift and nothing. Looked down and I lost my shifter bolt. Approached the stop light and came to a complete stop in 5th gear. Light turned green. Revved the motor to get the bike going. I figured if I could get it going, then the the motor will eventually catch up from the increased speed. Well it never did. I got it going, but I actually got slower and slower to where it didn't move at all. Went through all the gears and nothing (someone moved the shifter by hand). Dumb mistake I know (at least now I know. So no, I didn't think this would happen by revving the motor like that. This is the 2nd bike I have ever owned). One of 2 things happened. I am not a mechanic so my terminology might not be correct. One of the guys I was with thought when I lost the shifter bolt and the shifter came off its' pivot point (or whatever you call it), it lowered a gear (not sure if the term is correct) just enough to start tearing up the clutch fibers and when I was at the stop light revving up the bike, getting the oil hot enough to burn out the clutch (in essence finishing what was already started). The other thought was that I started and finished it when I was at the stop light and when I got the bike going. We were at the side of the road. A guy stopped and happened to be a Harley mechanic at a Yamaha/Suzuki shop which was close by. We pushed it over there and got into the service dept. They pulled the plug and sure enough there were fibers on the plug. So the other non-harley mechanics checked to see if they had the parts in stock, which they didn't. They said they don't get Ventures in the shop for burned out clutches. Called 5 or 6 places around Indianapolis. One place in Peru In (check out mapquest from Terre Haute to Peru - quite a haul) had it but no gasket. The dealer I was at said they can order an EBC kit, but thought they were junk and didn't elaborate why (why tell me you could order the kit but not recommend it. I didn't ask what parts do you recommend, they just started the conversation this way. Why not just say we can order the stock clutch kit). They recommended stock. Stock was the best to them. The Harley mechanic looked to be working more on dirt bikes than anything, but he said he works on Harleys. Talked to parts guy. He didn't rank stock, but said if it was him, he would buy EBC, but not Barnett (and didn't elaborate why). Ordered the EBC parts, left the dealer and got to our destination. We were at a gathering at a local dealer. I talked to other people. One guy just commented he didn't like aftermarket and always goes w/ stock. Other people had the same thoughts as me that EBC should last about as long as the bike. At best I figured I could go ahead have EBC put in to finish the riding season. Save over winter to put in stock (if stock is better) than EBC when riding season kicks in again. Then I would have a spare (EBC) set in case I need it. Even at that, if EBC clutch will last a very, very long time then I won't bother w/ putting in a stock set next year. Anyone w/ experience w/ EBC? I thought they were supposed to be very good quality.
  17. http://www.babbittsonline.com/ funny we came from the same world. I traded my '04 1300S Retro VTX for my '99 Venture. By chance were you on VTXOA.com when you owned your X?
  18. I plugged in the #'s for the '99 I just bought at the end of June into KBB I have 58k on the odo now. I think it had 56k when I bought it trade in Trade-In Value (Good Condition) $5330 retail (what dealer is going to list) Suggested Retail Value $7720 Dealer didn't ask for this much and I didn't pay what the dealer originally asked for
  19. I have e-mailed progressive and also one other place to see if they had something in the pipeline for an aftermarket shock. Progressive said "I am sorry but not at this time..... I will add this request to your monthly report for needed apps." The other place pretty much just said no we do not have anything planned. Progressive was much nicer about it. Wish I could remember what the name was of the other place. I am trying to think of other places that do aftermarket shocks.
  20. Due to some recent issues, I have bought one but haven't mounted it yet. I was thinking the same place on top of the triple tree. W/out looking at the bike right now, I thought the emblem was below the bolt, but could be wrong. Anyway, I was thinking about putting it over the emblem too.
  21. Someone suggested to me to put it on the bottom of your shoe, boot, or whatever you are wearing. Just not flip flops.
  22. If I understood him correctly the advise given to me by another member of this board is to up your rpm's. In other words if you are going say 70 mph, stay in 4th gear. Tried it recently and the chirping sound completely went away. It is a trade off. No chirping sound and lower gas mileage or chirping sound and high gas mileage.
  23. Just caught something. I have another post about battery drainage issue. Took off stebel horn and no more problems (at least not today). IF I wire it like I 1st posted (instead of how you suggested flipping #30 & #87, will I get power to the horn and drain the battery at the same time. Thanks Jerry. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26488
  24. quick update. Wife said earlier the light is green. So I am taking out all the stebel stuff.
  25. Bought the new (sealed) battery yesterday. I will look into the Odyssey one later, but I went w/ the OEM one. Changed the battery at work parking lot. Got home, hooked it up to the battery tender last night. Got up this morning and still got a red light. So I don't think the Odyssey would have worked in this case anyway. Obviously something else is going on. So this morning I unhooked all the accessories connected to the battery posts (including the battery tender connectors) and reconnected just the battery cable. So now the only thing connected to the battery is the battery cable. I got out the battery tender clips and connected it to the battery. I am hoping for a green light when I got home. If not, I am taking out the wiring for the stebel horn and removing the horn. Basically putting the bike the way it was when I got it and minus the battery tender cable that was already attached to the battery. But right now since I took off all the connectors that were attached to the battery posts except for the battery cable wire, I am not getting power to the horn anyway. One thing I noticed is there was a 20 amp fuse in the battery tender cable that you can bolt to the battery. This cable came already on the the bike. The battery tender cable w/ the clips, I had when I bought the battery tender. This only had a 3 amp fuse. I don't believe the bike was hooked up to the battery tender, but a few nights ago I had the lights go out in the garage. It was the breaker. Don't suppose it zapped the battery tender too. W/ a 20 amp fuse, it wasn't enough to blow that fuse? I wouldn't think so unless it was actually connected to the bike, but just a thought. Anything's possible I suppose.
