I figure when she gets older, wants to date, etc... I will let her 2 brothers do the dirty work for me. LOL She's only 4 and has already picked out her husband. Kinda suprised we haven't called Supernanny yet. 3 kids, ages 4 and under and all a handful. The youngest isn't 1 yet. He is quiet which you would think would be good, but he is observant so he learns how to be rotten at an earlier age by watching the other 2.

Not at all. Whenever we get the camera out, she wants to be front and center.

CB & radio Antenna
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Why not sure what you mean. -
Just a curiosity question. Does it make a difference if the cb antenna is on the left or right? When you are riding the antenna height is the same.

Just confirming all the cords are gone? Been looking for a cord for my 2nd J&M set and don't want to pay retail if I can help it. Just been waiting for the right deal to come up. Mine is the 1 piece that goes from the helmet to the connector on the bike. I believe the newer ones are 2 piece?

engine idle
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Found one of the nuts on the carb adjustment by # 1 carb was a little loose (not much) so I tightened that up. Still wasn't they way it was before. Also lowered the idle, but apparently wasn't enough. Took it to the dealer closer to home and asked the service manager to take a test ride. He experienced the same thing I was experiencing. He lowered the idle even more and now runs the way it used to (or at least close enough for me to not notice). Also the round nut by the handlebar needed to be loosened up. -
2 different bikes. I wish I could have kept my X when I bought the RSV. I had V&H pipes and a Pro-R Hypercharger. Not a cold weather bike w/ that combination. I had to use the choke more often than what I should have. Not sure if you are on the VTXOA forum, but I replaced the pilot jet w/ one of Hicks and it ran much better.

I keep the choke out just long enough to get out of the neighborhood. Just wonder if your co-workers bike is tuned properly.

17th confirmed bird strike of the year

Do you have one of those bird whistles on your scoot? It's probably attracting them, not scaring them away. -
My quick release seat mod
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Brakes are another thing. They said for $75 they could do the rear. I talked to the mechanic, he showed me the rear and no wear indicator left. They were pretty gone (he said metal to metal). I said no, I will do it. He gave me some pointers and said it is pretty straight forward. I had to leave to go to another town closer to home. I visited the Yamaha shop there and bought brake pads from them as I get a better discount. Talked to the service manager there and he pretty much backed up what the 1st guy said. One thing he mentioned the 1st one didn't was to make sure to clean the pistons and either use screwdrivers or a crowbar to push them in. I changed the brakes last night. It wasn't metal to metal, but there certainly wasn't very much pad left. I used some WD-40 and sprayed the pistons. Pretty easy job w/ the exception of pushing the pistons in. Those things are hard to push in. Got it all back together, pushed the pedal a few times to push the calipers back out. Put the bike in neutral and went several feet back and forth a few times to make sure brakes were working and they are. I did hear some rubbing sound, guessing this is from the new brakes touching the rotor? I am going to have someone listen down by the brakes to see if that is where it is coming from. Just guessing if I were to have opened the brake bleeder, it would have helped in pushing the pistons in? I didn't want to mess with getting air into the line, etc...so I didn't open up the bleeder. If the weather is nice, will be riding to work tomorrow. -

CB & radio Antenna
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Bummer or anyone else need you to jump in please. Correct me if I am wrong or confirm if I remember right. Once you have everything connected make sure you have a 25' circumfrence of open space (no metal besides your bike) or else it will mess up your SWR readings. Make sure you note the order of the parts as you taken them off the bike. You will need to put them in the same spot when you reassemble using the Firefly antennas or else it won't work properly. In adjusting SWR, take the black cap off of the Firefly, adjust the screw all the way down to the base, put the black cap back on, check SWR, if wrong, take the tip off, rotate the screw so it goes up (just do your own guessing here, maybe start by 1 or 2 complete rotations), check SWR, just keep doing it until you are w/in or as close to spec as possible. For the Firefly that you are going to be using as am/fm, not sure if there is any tuning involved since I bought an am/fm antenna. Good luck and keep us posted. -
engine idle
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Do you happen to know if the throttle cable is the same as the control cable listed on the 4k maintenance schedule? -
Anyone know the factory setting for idle and how to adjust it if needed? Had my 64k service done today and don't believe it was done correctly. I could take it back and say fix it, but if they potentially didn't do it right the 1st time... At a stop light, clutch pulled in, idles around 1100 rpm. Put it in neutral to be curious and it shot up to about 2-2100 rpm. I am pretty sure before I brought it in for service, the idle rpm speed was about the same regardless of in gear w/ clutch lever pulled all the way in or in neutral. Really not sure why it would make a difference. It practically accomplishes the same thing. Going in the highway at 65 mph, was around 2500-3k. Kinda weird that neutral and 65 mph are just about the same rpm. Also while going 65 mph, pull in the clutch lever and you can still hear the engine rev the same rmp for a few seconds instead of an instant drop. It more or less goes at the 2500-3k rpm for a few seconds and then gradually drops. I am used to an instant drop and not a delay. When shifting gears you hear the engine rev between the shifts. It runs pretty close to like it used to when going from 4th-5th. To quote the paperwork "Unit idles irratic and hangs us sometimes. Unit will need a carb. clean in the near future" Well I put in a full can of seafoam this year. Granted it could have loosened up some debris, plugged the jets, etc...but before I brought it in I wasn't complaining. It seemed to handle the same way (until after it was serviced today) since I bought the bike back in June '08 and this is the 2nd service done by this dealer. Just a guess, but I doubt the previous owner did anything for carb cleaning additives. So not sure if a carb cleaning is in order. On the 64k service they did change the plugs, synch the carbs, & adjust idle (amongs other things, they went by the 4k service). Can the comment about unit idles irratic and hangs up sometimes be related to the carbs being synched incorrectly? One of my questions (got a list made up already) to the tech on Tuesday when the shop reopens, is did he notice the irratic idle before or after the carbs were synched. I am pretty sure I know the answer, but I want to hear it from him. It was litterally at the end of the day and shop had about 10 minutes until it closed. The techs were gone except for the service manager. Asked her about the carb cleaning cost. She said and I quote "It has 2 carbs so $160" What!!!!! 2 carbs.....and you are a yamaha service manager. Just a wild guess, but I believe there are 4. I have read stories like this on this board but never happened to me until now. And also, I'll pass on the carb cleaning. The jets might need pulled to make sure there aren't any debris in them, but I ain't gonna pay to have it done for that much and based on my past 2 experiences w/ them, I ain't gonna let them touch the carbs. Too much knowledge on this board and also people that can help out if need be. I also mentioned to her that it's weird that it needs the carbs cleaned since I put in a can of seafoam earlier in the year. She said yeah, that stuff works ok, but sometimes you just have to pull the carbs all apart to get them really clean. Quick poll of '99 owners that have taken their carbs all apart to clean them or felt it was necessary. Thanks

sync carbs in indiana
Sideoftheroad replied to Goofeychuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
kewl Kevin. Tell you you go girl!!!! -
No pics needed, just a little imagination. Go to dealer for 64k service. Through telepathy, tell tech to half a$$ put the seat bolts back on. Get on bike ready to leave and notice something "weird" with the seat. Pull up on it a couple times and it is on there. Figure they must have missed the little tab in the back and think it's no biggie, will fix when you get home. Get home only to be able to pull the seat completely off as there are no bolts holding the seat down. Also notice that a couple accessories aren't attached to the fuse block like the Stebel horn (2 for 2 w/ this service shop). Get mad, say a few cuss words, go inside, eat supper, play with kids, get them ready to bed, post about your new quick release seat mod and you are done.

CB & radio Antenna
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That's correct. You can either buy 2 Firefly's or 1 Firefly and one AM/FM. Just personel preference which way you want to go. It will work either way. -
XM/Sirius
Sideoftheroad replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Let me know if you do, I might be interested in it. Been thinking about getting a Zumo lately and wife has been wanting satellite radio so... Thanks -
Notice the straw hat. A town close by had what they called a community safety day at the local hospital. They had state police helicopter, medical helicopter, an old sheriff blood hound (huge pooch for a blood hound wish I would have gotten a picture), SWAT gear, police cars, police motorcycle, fire trucks, etc.... Anyway as one of the kid events they had a big wheel race and my daughter won. You took 2 laps around. She stopped after the 1st lap, all the other kids did too and she took off. Beat them all by 1/4-1/2 lap.

What modifications did you have to do? Wife has been asking for XM/Sirius lately and thinking about it for a x-mas present. Might just get 2 receivers.
