With as much talk in all the forums of wanting an updated bike that can compete with the GoldWing it feels like Yamaha just said "screw you" to a lot of folks. Every Star in the lineup is new or (really) updated in the last few years except the Royals. Even the Road Star, that started in 1999 along with the RSV, got FI in 2008. But the Roadie people are pretty happy with it as is. I think this year they just lost a LOT of touring customers to Honda. It's all supposition but I think they are just trying to assemble all the RSV's that they can from parts that they have on hand and drop it all together. They probably think it isn't worth it to try and compete with Honda. And I see that they have the RSTD back now. I'm thinking that the reason they didn't make a 2010 was so they could use the workers and assembly lines to build the new Stryker and assemble all the other models. And now they are assembling the last of the RSTD's. Again, that's just MY tin hat theory.

I just got this in an email. Pretty good story. Duct tape is our friend

When I was taking an Auto Mechanics class in the mid 70's I used to rebuild a LOT of carbs... Lots of Q-jets, a few Thermoquads and a few of everything else. Back then you could get a 5 gal pail of carb cleaner with a basket for the parts that really did clean the parts. Really good stuff. I always noticed that when I got it on my hands it would make them feel slick. One day I dropped a check ball into the bucket and reached in to get it out. When I stood up I noticed that instead of the black carb cleaner on my arms like I expected I had a milky looking liquid. That's about when I noticed the pain and figured out that the milky color was my skin melting and mixing with the cleaner. I couldn't get to the wash basin fast enough. Looking at my arms for the next couple of weeks you would have thought I had gotten a major sunburn from the way they were peeling. Another time I dropped a bone handled knife into that same vat to clean it. Found out it was plastic and not bone. In high school I drove 20 miles to an auto mech class for half a day when I was a Senior. I would usually take a friend home and there was a set of train tracks on the way that were built up so where the road crossed them it made a nice 'jump' if you hit it fast enough. One day I just as I was "4 wheels off the ground" above the tracks I look over and I'm looking straight into the front end of a locomotive. Luckily... it was parked. Probably the biggest scare of my high school years.

For the Cummins one of the favorites is the Smarty with 10 programs. I have the Smarty Jr with 3 programs and just keep it on the 70hp Towing program. Like mountainhorsega said, EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) is extremely important. It seems that most of the electronic power add'ers make adjustments to help lower the EGT.

Well said. It (the modulator) works for me when I need it.

I'm up in Paducah, KY visiting my BIL and we dropped by the H-D dealer yesterday to check out their grand opening. (Old dealer, new location and building.) They are taking a huge chance, I think. The store is built to look like a paddlewheel riverboat and the guy I spoke to says they have the largest used bike inventory in the U.S. and I believe him. But they seem to be doing it right. Good selection, good and helpful employees... and, for H-D, prices were less crazy than others. But I'm still amazed to see them spending all that money NOW! http://images.psndealer.com/dealersite/images/fourrivershd/grandopening%20117.jpg

Some new thoughts on clutch basket whine
BigBoyinMS replied to straycatt's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
No more whining? Maybe not... My bro-in-law visited with his VStar 1300 and his bike whined more than my RSV. And forget trying to do a friction-zone turn with that jerky clutch. Granted, his may be the exception but it's the only one I've ridden. Let us know how your test ride turns out. I'm sure others would like to know, too. -
...and it's an even higher ratio than a 2nd Gen! I guess with the lower HP and a higher ratio it would be pretty anemic. But I still like the early Royals... I think of them as a Venture powered Road Star.

In a word, yes, it does do damage from sulphation. But you should be able to repair it with a battery charger that has a desulfation setting. Instead of going with the usual BatteryTender everyone buys, I went with the BatteryMinder brand that desulfates if it's needed. Here's a good link on sulphation, Bobby. http://www.progressivedyn.com/battery_basics.html

I don't think it's an armrest. I blew up the pic and it actually looks like a padded chest bar like on a roller coaster ride. And it looks like it's attached to his backrest somehow... or it's attached to the rear seat mount like his backrest. The clamp you see on the grab handles is just for that drink holder. Looks like he spent some time to make a protective setup just for her.

I was hoping it was someone here and they would recognize themselves.

Other than the reasoning on negative pressure... it really doesn't matter. You just want enough pressure for a good ride and it varies for everyone and the weight carried. The number doesn't really matter except to get back to the same spot again.

Whatever you do be sure to get the pillow top. I'm a big guy too at over 300 and the RSV is the only bike I have ever owned that I can actually ride fill-up to fill-up comfortably.

What you want to do is not that hard. There is a forum on Delphi forums called the "Ultra Star Forum" that can give you all sorts of info and links to fairings and bags. They are mainly Road Star guys but the Royal Star that you have shares a lot of parts with the Roadie. You'll just need to sign up for a free membership to get in. http://login.prospero.com/dir-login/index.asp?webtag=ultrastar&lgnDST=http://forums.delphiforums.com/ultrastar/start

As others have already said, almost any coolant will work but remember the two main things; make sure all of the old coolant is cleared out of the system. Some really don't mix well. I've seen some mixed that looked like a milkshake almost. Secondly, use only distilled water. Tap water can cause problems because of the impurities. I always knew to use distilled but never did. I found out the hard way by having to change heater cores in a truck I owned 3 times in 4 months. The acidity of the mix caused electrolysis that ate holes in the core.

pulled over for going through red light last night
BigBoyinMS replied to saddlebum's topic in Watering Hole
Check this magnet out. It would probably change the light a full minute before you arrive! And you'll be doing everyone a service by picking up every nail, screw and small car. The only problem is that you'll never get moving because your frame will be attached to the garage floor because of the rebar in the slab. Pull force is 1226.5 lbs http://www.kjmagnetics.com/prodimages/BZX0ZX0Y0-N52L.jpg -
pulled over for going through red light last night
BigBoyinMS replied to saddlebum's topic in Watering Hole
A couple of weeks ago I was coming back to work after lunch but I came a different way than usual. The last traffic light was a newer one that had the embedded sensors and it didn't recognize my bike so I sat there through two changes. I always give them 2 changes then I'm gone whether there's a LEO around or not. Just so happened that I checked my mirror halfway through the intersection and there was a local PO sitting just where I had been waiting for the light. I guess he pulled up behind me just as I was pulling away. He never moved so I guess he was ok with me rolling through the red light. But it was a little disconcerting to see him there. -

Sounds like a good idea for embedding some neodymium magnets into the heal of your boot. -
I think Wal-Mart, Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone take used oil as a rule... and I'm sure others.

Trying to tie down my RSV on a U-Haul trailer
BigBoyinMS replied to workerbee13's topic in Trailer Talk
I'll always use tie-downs on the rear. When I bought the '07 I had to trailer it the 200 miles home. Being that I don't trailer much I didn't do a great job of getting the front tie-downs tight but I did have tie-downs on the rear bag guards. About 20 miles into the trip home I noticed the bike moving more than I liked. One of the front tie-downs had come off of the trailer hook and the rear straps were the only thing keeping it upright... and doing a really good job of it too!- 25 replies
