Most embaressing biking moment,, I will start.
BigBoyinMS replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Well, this is about the best that I can do. LoL A buddy and I were riding in Vicksburg and for some reason I kept forgetting to downshift. After the third time trying to take off in 3rd I finally looked over at him and said, "Not an automatic, is it?" Of course, it didn't help that he almost fell over laughing at me.- 16 replies

Thanks for all the leads guys. Those that y'all mentioned are the ones I always hear about. But a new one is actually going to be my second choice. I almost always buy used... on cars or bikes. And I don't usually get in a hurry either. I may have to go a few hundred miles away but I usually end up with a killer deal! I bought my '07 RSV about 9 months ago. I had to drive 200 miles but I paid about $2500 under what most were going for. And it was accessorized pretty good too! I wouldn't even mind another Venture at the right price. I'd like to do a Starglide. But I still have to sell my Road Star. There's only so much room in the garage! Hey CMIK, were you at the Loose Caboose Festival in Newton Saturday? I saw 2-3 Midnights there.

The temps were in the upper 70's yesterday so a buddy and I ended up doing a 300+ mile loop. Since I am wanting to get an RSTD for a daily rider, we stopped in at the dealer in Hattiesburg,MS. They are probably the largest multi-line dealer in a few hundred mile radius. They just finished an addition that has them up to 42,000 sq ft. And they have just started on an addition for the service department. BUT, not all is well. My buddy and I are both 50+, we ride up on my '07 Venture and his '06 Wing. We look around for about 10 mins then I decide to price an RSTD. After 10 more minutes No one has approached us. In fact they are more interested in the teenager and his gf looking at the Raider. At one time there were 6 sales people standing around talking. I finally walk over and ask if there is anyone that isn't too busy to work up a price for me. I show him the one I'm looking at and ask for his best price for a cash deal. He says it will take him about 10 minutes to speak to his manager and then work it up. (The bike is an '08 and has a tag on it with the ' 08 MSRP and another for a $500 rebate) He finally comes back and shows me the figures. It's MSRP less the $500 plus the dealer fees and taxes! And he presented it like he had just cut me a huge deal! LOL Before the current economy, when I was looking to buy my Venture, every other dealer I spoke to was cutting an average of $2000 off of MSRP. I don't know, maybe this dealer can get away with a few hundred bucks off of MSRP but no one else seems to be able to.

Just thought I would mention... check the build date on the tire (last 4 digits of the DOT number, first 2 digits week, 2nd 2 digits year). It looks good but how old is it?
-
Might want to look and be sure the beads DID seat. They will hold air even if they don't seat all the way. And it takes a LOT of pressure to seat them!

I always have to buck the trend... If I was painting... I like a white bike!

First, I have to say that the car tire discussions on here lately have been some of the most civil I have ever been involved in on any forum. Good job, guys! Anyway, I haven't noticed any discussion on another aspect of the Darkside. Rear M/C tires on the front. One of the reasons we run c/t's is for the long wear life. To compliment the rear c/t, some have taken rear m/c tires and mounted them in reverse on the front wheel because rear tires are built heavier since the majority of the weight and acceleration forces are on the rear. But why in reverse? This is from the Metzler website: "Rear tires can be mounted at front wheels? When producing tires, the top cap is heated with an angle bump on the carcass. To prevent the detachment of the assembled edges the tire has to be mounted (concerning the main stress: acceleration force at the rear wheel or brake force at the front wheel) corresponding to the respective declaration. Therefore the declaration of the driving direction at the tires sidewall is a very important safety regard and has to be noticed absolute. It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels. In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires sidewall). Please observe the standards in your country. In any doubts we kindly ask you to consult your dealer." Just look at a normal bike. The tread direction is opposite on the front from the rear. One tire is oriented for acceleration and one for braking. Just some more info for those considering the Darkside.

When I installed the bag rails on mine I commented on how the spacers looked like pieces of heater hose... 5/8" I think. You may want to try that. Any parts store will have it.

Hmmm Along with some fuzzy dice for the w/shield!

According to the info that I found, the M/C tire is 25.4" diameter and the Kumho C/T is the same. Even 2 up I can't tell that there is much squish or flex in the tire. I have heard of the handling being "different" (not worse, just different) with a car tire, but I can say that I haven't had that except once when I lowered my air pressure to 35lbs as a test. If you can find a 2-ply sidewall then, of course it's better. I've never found any info on my Kumho on the sidewall plys. And as far as the speedo, every Yamaha reads about 7-8% fast so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you haven't done it yet, check out the DarkSiders forum at The Darksiders

Just remember, eagleeye... there are more choices than just the Federal out there. Vredestein, Nexen, Kumho, Mickey Thompson and others. I'm running the Kumho with no handling difference that I can tell. I was going to try the Vredestein next time but may go with the Mickey Thompson now. Good Luck!

Yeah, it's only 1.5% difference.

I like the looks of the M/T tire. It's slightly less than a 1/2" shorter though. Really wouldn't make any difference to me, in fact, the lower final gear ratio would help. Pricing is close to the Vredestein, which was going to be my next tire. Now it may be the M/T!

Hey, wild hair 39.... Where did you find the specs on your Kumho? And what model was it you got? I've never found the specs for the side or tread plys on mine. I'm running the Kumho Power Star 758 which is the same diameter (25.4") as the M/C tire and has a load rating of 1199-1202 lbs. The 758 does have a fairly soft sidewall but it doesn't seem to affect the handling.

Don't Tread on Me
BigBoyinMS replied to knifeeven's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Front tire doesn't affect the speedo... only rear. The pickup for the speedo is on the rear diff. -
Here is one more pro... The reinforced Avon Venoms have a load rating of 80H which I believe is in the low 900 lbs. My Kumho is rated at 1202 lbs. Being a big guy, I like that extra capacity!

And here is the Darksiders forum on Delphi... you'll need to register for free. http://login.prospero.com/dir-login/index.asp?webtag=DarkSiding&lgnDST=http://forums.delphiforums.com/DarkSiding/start

If you have the same experience as me then you won't ever feel any difference in handling. The only time it handled any differently to me was when I dropped the pressure to 35lbs because that was the suggestion on the Darksiders forum after 1000 miles. I've had it at 40-42 lbs from the beginning and I'm leaving it there as long as it handles like it has been. FYI, I'm running a Kumho Power Star 758. Good Luck!

Personally, I like most of the colors. Main thing is that it is a 2nd GEN!

I bought a Road Star a year ago after 30 years of H-D's and liked it so much I decided I needed to get a bike for the two of us so I bought the Venture. Now I like the Venture so much I want to sell or trade my Road Star for a RSTD or another RSV so I can build it into a solo rider.
-
It may be a good time to upgrade to a rear car tire with its 25% higher load capacity. I like the extra safety factor.
-
I remember those photos from a few years ago. A log truck driver was hauling a load and it felt like he hit a bump in the road. Then his truck started running hot so he headed back to town and that's when he saw that he had hit the bear and damaged his radiator.

I'll write "2 Adults live here" and return it. Maybe.

I feel for his family. And to top it off they have to read this crap the paper prints. (I guess this was copied from a newspapers website.) The woman turns in front of the guy and they start trying to put some of the blame on the rider. Police said it appeared from the damage to the van that the motorcyclist might have been speeding when the woman turned in front of him. I guess they think a bike should just leave a chip in the paint. Why would the 'reporter' mention the blood on the road in that article? I think they hire 'reporters' now based on whether they breathe through their mouth or not. They can't even spell or put together a meaningful sentence anymore.

You may want to check out this page. The Metzler ME880 'Stage 1' upgrade is a 170/80B15 and it was wide enough that it was rubbing the swingarm and burning when riding. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002011&id=295&highlight=tire%20upgrade
