Motorkote comments and tracking??
BigBoyinMS replied to Judes Dude's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Hey Dave, I still haven't had a chance to hear anyone else's bike AND noise is subjective but to me MY chirp and whine didn't bother me that much. So to me the Motorkote didn't have as much noise to quieten as some. Then again it could have been one of the louder ones; I don't know. Have you done a Moly 60 drive line lube? A few months ago I very suddenly developed a whine that was so bad that I shifted into 5th one day and thought an ambulance was trying to pass. I thought I was about to have a major repair. I ended up doing three things and one (or more) of them pretty much fixed it. 1. The one that I think did the most good was the Moly60 drive line lube. I had lubed it a few thousand miles before but it was before I knew the importance of Moly60. The drive fingers were bone dry and I think that was a lot of it. 2. I shimmed the pumpkin where it bolts up to the driveshaft tube. It seems that some wheel/pumpkin assembly's are in a bind when the acorn nuts are torqued; almost like the driveshaft tube is too short. I shimmed mine to take the bind off of it. 3. And I changed oil at the same time but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Just more info in case it helps. And if you do a search there is a thread with pics of my lube and shim. Edit: Here's the link. Dave -
Motorkote comments and tracking??

Well, I'm amazed. It works! I put 8 ozs Motorkote in the Ventures oil. I also added about 1 oz to the rear diff while I was at it. Wife and I went on a 160 mile round trip ride today and when we first started out it actually sounded louder than usual. After about 15 minutes we both put on headsets so I can't comment on anything but the last 40 miles of the ride when we removed the headsets and got on the interstate. As soon as I shifted into 5th I realized that all I could hear was wind noise, the exhaust and a little background engine noise. NO whine and No chirp. NONE. I started wondering if this is what the GoldWing guys hear. In 1st and 2nd I still hear a little of both but they are cut by at least 1/2. Good stuff! -
Who makes the best quality slip-ons?

I've only seen one set of Bub's that the tips looked good and that may have been because they were at a distance. I have Bub's on my Road Star and they are just as everyone else describes; half the chrome is flaked off. All the Bub's sound so good if they could just get a good supplier for the end caps. -
Does anyone else have these problems?

I'm not sure what the owners manual says but on my bike when I press 'accel' once it only moves up about .5 mph; 2 fast taps about 2 mph. My shock was groaning really badly. When I last did a Moly60 lube on my driveline and while I had the rear wheel off I took every bolt out of every pivot point on the shock and lubed each one with the Moly. No more groans for a while but now I'm getting just a little noise again. -
Don, I hope you like the Kumho as much as I do. The first 100 miles felt the oddest to me and even that was as good as the worn tire that came off. I just dropped from 35 lbs to 32 lbs as a test since I was going to make a 500 mile round trip ride today but it didn't work out with the weather. I may still give it a couple hundred mile 2-up run tomorrow morning though.

I'm just a bit heavier than you and once my wife is on back I'm over limit. Add some stuff in the bags and I end up 40-50lbs over. Just wait till I get a trailer hooked up! When I bought the bike I was a little concerned about this too but mainly because of the weight limit of the bike tire. The reinforced ones have a limit of just over 900 lbs. That's one of many reasons that I went to a car tire with a 1200 lb weight limit. All I can say is, now that I have the CT on I have a lot more confidence when we ride.

Motorkote comments and tracking??

Yup, my memory is off on the amount. I always end up in the center of the glass, just forgot how much. Should have my Motorkote tomorrow. -
Motorkote comments and tracking??

Now that I have a Carbon_One adapter I'll be doing it that way, too! Aren't you in Texas? What's with this liter stuff? Just kidding you! Actually, 3.5L (which is almost 3.7 Qts) should put it in the site glass. People here that have changed their oil more times than me can probably tell you better but to get it halfway on the site glass I think I have about 8 ozs (.25 Qt or .24L ) left in the gallon jug. -
Can't Keep bike running? ANY HELP
BigBoyinMS replied to TheKid's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just for the heck of it... turn the petcock to reserve and drain some fuel into a clear container.. just to see what may be in it. Can't hurt to check. But it sure sounds like a fuel issue or maybe a vacuum leak. -
Is that a riders bell on her collar? You tryin' to cut down on vet bills?

The only things that I (may) do differently than you is set the kickstand on a piece of 2x4 and turn the forks to the right to get the bike more level and after it's drained I'll stand it up by hand to be sure it's drained well. When adding, I pour in about 3.5 QT's then go from there. You shouldn't have to wait long for it to settle. And according to Motorkote you don't leave out any oil; you add the 8 oz's in on top of the full amount of oil. -
Where I grew up in the '60's and '70's people would use the least expensive and easily accessible oil in their vehicles. That happened to be Quaker State 30w non-detergent. On top of that they would hardly change it. And it would make a mess of an engine. Hard, crusty deposits that looked like there had been a hi-temp fire in the engine that carbonized all the oil. Because of this, Quaker State got a really bad (undeserved) reputation in the South because of mis-use of their product. The 30w non-detergent was meant only for small engines such as lawn mowers. I said all that just to say that I don't really think there are any bad oils out there these days. In my opinion, you do need to keep the viscosity close and make sure not to use an "Energy Conserving" oil. But some oils are better than others! Synthetics are always going to beat the dino oils. If I could ride down to the local parts store or Wally World and pick up Amsoil at a discount then I would probably use only that. But since I can't, I'll probably stick with the 15w40 Rotella Dino or Mobile-1. (Until Rotella Synthetic starts coming in 15w40. ) I would be using the Rotella 5w40 Synthetic right now but I'm not comfortable with it in 100+ degree temps. I started hearing more noises with it, especially in my air-cooled Road Star. And yes, I know others use it in the same bikes in the same sort of temps. It's a good oil but just too thin for my bikes. But the Cummins in my Dodge loves it! I gained 15% on my fuel mileage. Anyway, that's just my nickels worth of hot air.

This is the best price that I found... $67 each at http://www.cyclemaxohio.com/ MUCH less expensive than J&M headsets and I've read good things about them.

Hey Steve, I just got 2 of these IMC's for the wife and I today. They seem to work great! Took just a few minutes to read the manual and get everything on the bike adjusted. I think we are going to like'em! No more yelling!

Motorkote comments and tracking??

I just pulled the trigger on 2 of the 32oz bottles. I hope it's as good as it's supposed to be! -
If someone mentions Rotella they are talking about oil marketed for diesel engines... and a lot of us use it because it works so well in our bikes... and cars. :-) Shell markets Rotella and the Rotella brand is only marketed as a "Diesel" oil. You can get Rotella in dino 15w40 or 5w40 Synthetic. I tried the 5w40 but it seemed a little thin for Mississippi in the summer so I went to the 15w40. No problems.

In a perfect world that's the way it would be done. But... We are far from perfect so it probably isn't going to happen. And the way your "request" came across a few on here are gonna give you crap about it. To tell the truth, even I (the nice guy that I am ) considered making a few posts titled "Meaningful Titles".

I think lot of it is individual perception. Someone that has never been on an RSV may get on my bike and think it's the noisiest bike there is where another rider that has ridden them may think it's pretty quiet. They are mechanical gear driven machines and there is going to be some noises. At the moment, mine sounds ok, probably as good as any. A few months ago mine started getting noisy and actually sounded like it had a siren attached by the time I shifted into high gear. After I shimmed the pumpkin and lubed everything with Moly60 it's back to normal. I think it was the cheap (Harley D) wheel bearing grease that wore off of the fingers after 4000 miles. Personally, any RS with a loud whine should start by doing a Moly60 lube on the fingers and driveshaft gears... and maybe the shim. I wish I had taken the time to do the shim by itself before the lube so I could tell whether it made any difference.

What gunboat said. I wouldn't feel nearly as confident with a M/C tire on the back of mine. Especially in wet weather. FYI, I took a 260 mile roundtrip Saturday to check on some property I have and I was on some highway that is having some resurfacing done. I had to roll over about a dozen areas where they had ground the road down for about 100ft each time. The worst that I felt was the front tire making an almost imperceptable correction on a groove one time.

gunboat has it right. Here are a few pics of it mounted. http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC01118.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC01116.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/tire.jpg

I've been noticing lately some guys using vegetable oil on the beads with good results. I think I'll give that a try next time. -
I just finished reading this entire thread. I'm glad it had a happy ending! I don't know you yet but I'm glad you're back, because...
