'04 Venture Fairing
BigBoyinMS replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Looks like an aftermarket universal fairing. I've seen that model lately on my Road Star forum but I don't remember the brand. -
Not a problem. I usually try to move it over to the Darksiders section when it becomes a debate but I failed to do so this time. And I won't add to the debate with this post like Goose did either. All I'll say is, "Goose, you're welcome to the Darksiders section anytime!"

I guess you're of the opinion that CT's and reversed MT's are unsafe. That's your opinion and it's good that you have one... even if it's wrong.

First of all, when it comes to doing something different from the norm everyone needs to research it and make their own decisions. If you don't think it's a good idea then you don't need to do it. But you can't tell me I'm wrong in my explanation when I'm not. I'm not disagreeing on the belts, I just didn't go into that part of it. And that explanation is part of the reason to reverse a rear on front. But I will disagree with you on the tread patterns being different on the front. On many tires they are the same front and back. As you said, "just looking at them will tell you that". Take a look at the pics below. Sure, some tire models use different patterns front to back. Some use the same pattern and add a center groove. But more use the same pattern front and back. And the tread direction is a major reason for reversing. On the rear it's optimized for acceleration where it's reversed on front to optimize braking. The rear being reinforced and a higher load rating is just a bonus. The extra tread depth is the main reason that most Darksiders put rears up front. It gives us a tire that will closer match the car tire in tire life. And most report better handling but that's probably from having a new tire. But like you said, we all get to run what we want. In my case I'll run the better handling, longer lasting, lower priced and safer tires. http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:2w2Ku50FqedkVM:http://www.tire-information-world.com/images/treadwear-rating-on-motorcycle-tires-34641.jpg http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ylW-NAkK-RuFcM:http://www.ibspro.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/motorcycle_tire.jpg http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:d4tzDMRVUXGQoM:http://www.compacc.com/images/product/200/13027_1.jpg http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:n2e7yAY4zwnsnM:http://www.motorhelmets.com/pics-products/irc/bodyparts-motorcycle-tires-irc-scooter-ss-530.jpg

Mine has spacers similar to Whitlows. They put the bars just right. Just one thing to know... at full right or left you will bump the ignition switch cover. If you have the stock black plastic cover it's no biggie but I think there is an accessory chrome metal one that would definitely get dented or at least scuffed.

Rear tire on front in reverse is a smart move no matter what brand of tire. Rear tires are more reinforced and have almost twice the tread so they will usually last at least twice as long as normal. In reverse because the tread designs on all directional bike tires are reversed between front and rear. I have heard of some that didn't reverse it and had no problems but braking should be better if it was reversed.

Yeah, it does feel good to ride a safe tire, doesn't it?

Some Tips on Changing the 2nd Gen Coolant
BigBoyinMS replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It's just my opinion, but I think backflushing would a waste of time on most bikes. (But I don't think it would hurt) I would think the only time backflushing may be needed would be on an engine that had not had the coolant changed often OR has used only tap water. In that case you could have some scale. Basically, if you drain it and it looks clean then I wouldn't backflush. Again, just my opinion. :2cents: -
If I knew then what I know now... I would have bought an older RSV with low miles. They only changed colors over the years and if you buy newer just for the 5 year warranty, you probably would never use it. I like my '07 but I would rather spent the money on accessories rather than a newer bike.

This brings back bad memories. I had them 3 times in 3 years and almost exactly 1 year apart. It was a pair the 3rd time. After a couple of times in the ER I found that Demerol did nothing but make me drowsy; didn't help with the pain at all. The last time I just stayed home and made loud undignified noises and threw-up. LoL Ever see a man in labor?

Yup, it must be a regional thing. I just did a search of Craigslist within 400 miles of me and found 3... '99 RSV $5700 '00 RSV $6500 12k miles '01 RSV $6800 2 weeks ago I found 4 '99 RSV's from $4500-$6000. And they usually show up again about 6 weeks later. Same way with the Roadie's.

Maybe you were lucky or maybe yours was listed low or maybe it's just this area that has a weak market... but I keep seeing the same bikes (including mine) listed over and over in this area. In any case, someone else and myself just may get lucky and have just what the other is looking for. Sure can't hurt to ask!

As hard as it is to sell a bike these days I'm going to try something different. I want to do some trading. I just posted my 2006 Road Star Midnight, with photos, in the Classifieds section under "Other Motorcycles". I'm wanting to do a Solo Star Glide to go along with my '07 RSV so i'm hoping there may be a member here with a Venture that's wanting to trade for a Road Star. I'm open to any year 2nd Gen. but I would rather it be a similar year to my Roadie so neither of us has to pay much difference but I won't let that stop me if I need to. Well, let's see what happens!

This company is probably the top of the heap when it comes to mounts. http://www.ram-mount.com/ And you can find better prices for their stuff by using the item number and doing a web search.

And the "jittery" speedo needle... it isn't really a physical needle. It's a digital speedo and the display jumps in 1 or 2 mph increments.

Tour-pack on, Finally
BigBoyinMS replied to wes0778's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Looking good! -
If you are talking about the bundle of hoses that hang down under the frame in front of the rear wheel... I believe those are all vent hoses. Fuel tank vent, crankcase vent, etc. It's normal for them to be damp and maybe even drip every now and then, especially if you just filled up on a hot day and parked in the sun. Oil or gas vapor will condense and eventually there will be a drip.

IMHO, 5-6 year old tires need to come off even if they only have 100 miles on them. This is a quote from one of the tire companies and almost every one of the others has a similar quote... “Tires should be replaced after six years, regardless of the remaining tread… Failure to follow this warning can result in sudden tire failure. You could lose control and have an accident resulting in serious injury or death.” The outside of a tire can look great but they can and do deteriorate from the inside. (And now, the paragraph that all my Venturerider bud's were waiting for.... ) The tires the others recommended (Avons, E3's or Commanders) are great tires but I would be failing in my duty as a Darksider if I didn't mention the BEST rear tire for the Venture... (In my and others opinion) The Kumho Power Star 758 car tire in 165/80R15. For me it gives a better ride, better grip for braking and in the curves, 2-3 times longer tread life, has a 25% higher load rating and cost less than 1/3 of what you will spend on the best M/C tires. Some think the handling feels different (not worse, just different) but to me it feels just like the M/C tire that was on it before. If that interest you at all, spend some time researching it and make your own informed decision. If you have any questions, just start a new thread in our Darksiders section and we'll be glad to help!

I'm here the most with the "Road Star Clinic" running a close 2nd and there are a half dozen others where I check in to see what's hap'nin. The more places I go, the more I know.

Jeckel, I have an '06 Road Star Midnight and an '07 RSV. Even though I REALLY like the Roadie I've been advertising it for sale or trade for an RSV. (I really want to build a solo Star Glide. ) I've also been looking around for RSV's and I've found a few 99's that sound just like that ad in the $5000 - $6500 range. If it was >ME

You're exactly right. I had to stop paying attention to the the CFC lot after some of the vehicles that I saw coming in. I saw a couple of late '80's Chevy 1/2 tons both with less than 70k miles and straight as an arrow. There was '04 Trailblazer with low miles that needed a paint job. The other lots around town had even nicer ones. Does anyone remember in the 80's California had a similar program where people would bring in old "polluters" and they would pay them a few bucks to let them crush them? One of the magazines (Car Craft or Hot Rod, I think) actually intercepted someone trying to turn in a clean late 60's Camaro. They bought it and turned it into a project car. When it was done they tested it and the emissions were better than most stock vehicles.

I wouldn't mind trying one of those out! ...but it ain't gonna happen until the price drops another $300 bucks!
