There used to be a guy alive here in Amarillo who used this same pusher-prop idea in a dune buggy frame. It was licensed for the street and he also used it as such (yes, I've seen it). One day, he had pulled the engine and mounted it on his engine stand to service it while it was running, he had been drinking a few beers also. He forgot to secure the engine stand to the wall with a chain as was customary. He did not survive the assault that followed and could not shut the engine off to save himself. Herein lies the flaw with using pusher-prop technology in a land based vehicle. Someone is gonna get too close to that blade and get themselves killed.

I once worked with an older lady of the blue-haired persuasion. She had gone to get her hair done during her lunch hour one day. Well, it ran a little long on this particular occaision and she was running late on her return to work. She got caught by a local cop while going 72 in a 30 (residential). She came back to work FUMING. That stupid cop had written her a ticket and she just couldn't figure out why. She had explained that the reason she was speeding was that she was in a hurry (naturally you wouldn't be going fast if you weren't). Furthermore, she wasn't doing any harm in going fast because she was in a residential area (yep, another one got out of the "enchanted kingdom" a bit too early). She said that ill-mannered cop yelled at her and really let her have it about her speed and that she was going to fight the ticket. I told her that if I had been the cop, I would have pulled her from the drivers seat by her blue hair and hauled her high and mighty butt off to jail without a second thought.

Were you on a blue VR riding southbound through Springfield, Colorado? Was it on Monday of this week? (03/23/2009) At around 11:00 MST? Did you turn westbound on 160? I was sitting in a Co-Way truck at the truck stop when you rode by. It caught me off guard to see a VR go by, I usually only see Harleys or Gold Wings go by at that location.
-
OK, I've only been back riding for a half of a year. Back when I was young, Bike riders that wanted a CB radio on their bike were installing "standard issue trucker type" CB radios on their bikes. I don't know if this is still the case or not. I've seen a few handlebar mounted walkie-talkie lookin' things, but I really haven't had the chance to look at any more modern CB installations. I feel quite confident that the CB equipment I currently have (Galaxy 10-meter Ham converted to CB, 500 watt linear, Texas Star modulator) will not fit on my 1st gen and even if it did, there's no way that the bike could ever pump out enough electricity to power this stuff. My preference for a bike CB would be a Cobra 25 LTD or a Uniden PC66 (either of them being equipped with 50-watt hot finals and a Conex board) but I have no idea if installing either of these type radios is possible. Anyone care to bring me up to speed on what my best options would be for a CB installation on an '84 VR?

Yep. Could make for a sticky situation for a few varmints.
-
I'm truly hoping I've ruined their night. Last summer I had some corn planted in that spot. The neighborhood varmints trampled down the center of what I was growing and bedded down there. The center of this Agave is dead center of where they were sleeping. Let's see them trample this down now.

Nope, and I ain't gonna do that stuff neither. I'm silly enough without it. And I ain't gonna try to smoke anything off this plant either. Remember the part I wrote abut avoiding harpooning myself?

My eldest nephew recently bought a house a few blocks from where his folks live. A nice 4 bedroom house. The front flowerbed had the "Southwest Motif" as far as selected vegetation was concerned. There was a selection of cactus, Yucca and three large Agave plants. Herein lies the problem he had with these. He has a 3-year old son and a 7-year old daughter. Having been a kid at one time myself, I know it'll be just a matter of time before one of the kids comes running in screamingly because of a bad encounter with something pointy. Nephew wanted the plants gone and I needed an Agave for my flowerbed to put an end to some neighborhood stray dogs from bedding down in my flowerbed. So we had a break in the weather today and we made arrangements to perform an Agave transplant today. The plan was for nephew to leave a garden hose on overnight slowly trickling in order to loosen up the roots. We'd then wrap a chain around the trunks and pull 'em out with my truck. Everything went as planned except for us destroying the roots on the smallest of the Agave plants. No problem. Between the two others, there ought to be one that was the right size to fill the spot in my flowerbed and the remaining plants were going to have to be either disposed or given away. We loaded the three plants up, threw a strap across the back and with the tailgate down and topper lid up we headed home. I had concerns that I probably should have placed a sign on the back that said "Do not tailgate!" as the largest of the plants was at the back with the spines pointing out like a porcupine. Got home and got to measuring. The largest of the three was going to be the one getting planted at my house. Got the hole dug in the flowerbed, fashioned a rope harness so I could lift the thing by myself without getting harpooned in the process and stuck it in the ground. I then called one of my brothers up and his wife wanted the other plant that had the good root structure. I ran that over to him, made her happy and then dropped the bad one off at the shrub shredding place. All in all, a productive day and I'm very happy with the end result. http://i41.tinypic.com/2r4opjo.jpg

Stock Filters

I bought the Fram CH6002 from Advance Auto here. Be sure to look in their motersickle section of the store, it won't be with the auto filters. I paid just over $6. -

Oil Filter Question
Schlepporello replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I went to Advance Auto this morning and they had 3 of the Fram filters on the shelf, and $2 cheaper than what the Yamaha filter cost me too! I went ahead and grabbed one so I could have a referance to compare the "new" Yamaha filter with and it appears that if there is a difference,it's ever so slight. The benefits of the Fram filter from Advance Auto is that it came with the rubber gaskets whereas the one from the stealership did not. I'll go ahead and use up both of them. Eventually, I plan on getting an adapter to switch to spin-on automotive filters. See http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28358. -
Oil Filter Question
Schlepporello replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not a problem at all. There are a lot of things in Canada that you pay a lot more for than here in the US (and I'm not boasting, just stating fact). Being a very active member on my favorite tuba forum, I hear horror stories about how much tubas cost in Canada all the time. For instance, 5 years ago I paid $5000 for a new tuba here in the US (Miraphone 187). You wanna calculate how much that same tuba would have cost in Canada were I to have bought it from a stealership there? And our Canadian kinsmaen who wish to sell the tubas they have so they can move up to a higher quality tuba can't sell their horns here unless they're willing to take a major bath. It can make a tuba player's head spin. Enough rabbit chasing. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. -

Oil Filter Question

Which is what prompts me to believe that I'm being snookered. Furthermore, the new filter looks too big to go in the filter holder thingy anyways. -
Oil Filter Question
Schlepporello posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK, so when I bought my brake pads, I figured I'd see what a new oil filter would cost. Then not thinking the price was too outrageous, I bought one. My local thievery shop sold me a #1J7-13441-10 filter. Then later, while looking through the parts catalog for my '84 VR, I noticed that the recomended filter number is #1J7-13440-91-00. So I took the filter back today to get the correct filter and was told that the old number had been replaced with this "New" number. Personally, I think the parts man behind the counter was smoking crack. In the service manual, there's supposed to be a rubber ring gasket, this "new" numbered filter has none, nor does it have a place for one. What say ye? -

Thanks! But is the needle bearing being held in place with a circlip on the drive hub side? -

Thanks Squeeze, but it's the needle bearing I'm concerned with. I bought the Harbor Freight blind hole bearing puller and the 6304 bearing came out fast and easy. -
Yes, I know. The problem is that the local dealership that I would like to use doesn't sell them. I'd surely like to give 'em a shot, but as rusty as my repair skills are, I don't trust myself with putting on a tubeless tire, having never put one on before.

Now I'm getting good and confused. The bearing must be destroyed to remove. does it remove through the driveshaft side of the wheel or the disc brake side? If it removes from the driveshaft side, is there a circlip that holds it in place? The service manual doesn't clarify that well enough for my comprehension. And finally, if the old bearing is destroyed to be removed, won't I run the same risk of destruction by replacing it? Thanks for being patient with me guys. You know how it is, some people have got to be walked through a few things. -
Oh! OK. So that might explain why the tire ain't blowed up on me yet?

Thanks George! Unfortunately, I don't have ANY old motorcycle tires lying around. What, pray tell, would I be looking for? Is the Elite II a thinner tire?
