Exhaust system issues
Schlepporello replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check the exhaust gaskets on your rear manifolds were the exhaust hooks up with the manifold. I had lots of exhaust escaping through mine. The bike sure is quieter now since I fixed it. -
Thanks! Didn't even think of the Zone. And there's a new one right in my 'hood on south Washington.

I hadn't even thought about plugs. Do i need to stop by Sharp's and grab some on my way out?
-
I doubt that I'll be there at 9:00, more like 10 or 11. I'd like the missus to take an interest and tag along, but she doesn't like motersickles and has already stated she's staying at home. I've already checked your address on MapQuest. It'll be a snap getting to your house. I might have to swing by R&M Energy to see if anyone's working.

That works for me just fine. I plan on drinking nothing stronger than straight Pepsi on the rocks. I'm silly enough when sober. I don't need any help.

I've only been on that stretch of road between Clovis and San Jon one time in my life. It was heavy fog that day and visibility was down to a half a block. Though I couldn't see much to the side of the road, the drive up the caprock looked like it could be interesting on a bike.

Hey Jerry! Have you decided on a time for us to start showing up?
-
I gots duck tape and zip ties. Will that help? Oh! And a hammer! I gots a really good hammer!

Count me in Jerry. The wife doesn't know it yet, But I'll smooth things over and plan on coming up. I shouldn't have any difficulty in finding your house, Borger used to be my route (I drive for Con-Way). I will be most likely traveling by myself as the missus isn't that fond of motersickles.

DIY Switch Panel For The 1st Gens

Please forgive my ignorance. What are you using for a spacer? Do you get them pre-fabbed or do you have to cut it from something? -
replacing rear exhaust gaskets

I went down to a local Electric Utility distributorship where several of my former co-workers are now employed. We checked the size wire I had used and it mic'ed out as beeing #10. They had some scrap #8 bare and they cut me off about a foot of it. I'll be giving that stuff a try here shortly. -

I took mine out for a ride today, post-copper wire gasket placement. I could not believe how much quieter the bike was. I cannot hear the engine over the wind and tire noise. Oh! I can hear tire noise now! -

replacing rear exhaust gaskets
Schlepporello replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Special tool? They make those? I went to my local Harbor Freight store and bought a set of sockets that had the "Metric" hex key protruding from them. That way, I could just remove the bolt on the clamp with my ratchet and an extension. Once the clamp is off, there's just enough room to work the size 10 copper wire around the pipe. I tried doing it with #12 and started cussing. #10 is a breeze. -

Well, the radio don't work worth a flip. But I could sing some of my favorite Opry tunes. -
replacing rear exhaust gaskets

This is one of the reasons I love this board. It's my kind of repairwork, stuff I can understand. Both sides on my rear cylinders were leaking at the joint you've mentioned. As seated on the bike, I did this to the right rear exhaust first and was amazed that it sealed right up. I then did it to the left rear exhaust and it still has a little puff of blow-by. Should I make a second ring to run up behind the first or maybe try a slightly larger copper wire? Or should I just be happy that it's not leaking nearly as bad as it used to? -
Tu-ba or not Tu-ba, that is the question: whether 'tis nobler in the minds of men to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous blurts, blats and cracks, or by opposing, end them with a mighty blast - aye, there's the rub!

I saw those clips a long time ago. The only place that you're gonna find an animal big enough to be shot with that rifle is in Africa. Dang! It makes your shoulder hurt just in watching. And what about the trigger gaurd? Do ya reckon it bit the ol' trigger finger just a bit?

When I ride, I wave at all other motorcyclists I encounter without regard to what they are riding. Around here, the ones who are most likely to not return the wave are the young punks on the crotch rockets. I'll get the occasional HD rider who's too stuck up to wave, but I've experienced the same thing from a few Gold Wing riders. It's their problem, not mine.

Where to buy brake pads??
Schlepporello replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The pads I pulled off my bike were the sintered pads, but I went back on with organics. I've only taken the bike for a short ride once since installing them and they seemed to work just fine. When I inspected the rotors after pulling the pads, I could easily tell I had some nasty grooves cut in the rotors. I took them to get them turned and they came out fine and are still within specs, but I'd really rather not run the risk of cutting grooves in the rotors again. Another thing I noticed was that my rear pads were worn much more than either set of the front pads. That tells me that the equalization system between the rear caliper and left front caliper isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'll be using more front brake from now on. -

Sorry, my bad. Eventually I'll learn to read a bit more carefully. -

Your dealer is a crack-smoker. All three rotors on an '84 use the same pads. I just finished replacing the pads on my '84 and compared the old pads with each other as well as the new replacements just to be sure. -
Remember when we were kids and we used to steal some of dad's playing cards and mom's clothespins? We'd then clip a card to one of the forks so it would click against the spokes as the wheel turned. And we thought we were bad to the bone bikers. We'd have to figure out a way to stick a playing card into the front spokes somehow on this'n.

Thanks Yama Mama, that's what I needed to know. I had bought a cigarrette outlet powered air pump about 28 years ago. When the need finally arose to use it, it wouldn't blow out a match.
