Mysterious Puddle under bike
PBJ replied to PBJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
all good observations . It is definitely not brake fluid. Its not oily at all. So i don't believe its either that or from the shock. the bike is on its center stand and the puddle is just in from of the stand so the gas tank is just above it. It has no smell at all and looks and feels like water. Eagleeye: the barn had a gravel and dirt floor when we moved in. We didn't have the money to lay cement so we used an old pool cover and then layed down indoor out door carpeting over that. We did this to protect the bikes and my mustang from ground moisture coming up. -
Here in the Finger lakes of Central New York one of our favorite roads Is Route 54A between Branchport and Hammondsport New York. It is a Mecca for riders in this area. The road itself is only about 24 miles long but it is a roller coaster of a road. The speed limit is only 35 mph but most people travel it at about 45 to 50 mph. the road is a wonderful series of lefts and rights ups and downs. It hugs the coast line dropping near to the water then rising 20 30 40 feet about the waters surface. The road terminates in the little hamlet of Hammondsport, the home town of Glenn Curtiss the second person to fly a heavier than air craft. There are several great restaurants and a wonderful mom and pop ice cream shop in the town square. The square is usually lined with bikes from riders all over the area. After riding in most ride back out of town in the opposite direction. Rt.54A is connected to others roads across to Canandaigua Lake(Little Italy valley) and north up Rt.21. These roads have wonderful panoramic views of the lakes some from hundreds of feet about the lakes themselves. This area is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Mountains. They are old and worn but they still hold great views and beauty. As a limo driver and a rider I have been over the best of these . Two years ago NYJerry lead a great tour through this area though Rt.54A was not included . But if you are in this area ,its a must ride.

Okay gang here's a weird one. I'm storing my 86 in an old barn. I laid down plastic on the floor and then carpeting (over dirt and stone) . We had some heat for a few days then rain here. I keep a piece of wood under the bike to place the center stand on. In the last few days i have noticed a puddle under the bike. Its not gasoline, its not anti-freeze, its not fluid from the battery or oil. Because the gas tank is under the seat I'm wondering if this is condensation coming off the tank. If its not that, what could it be and where is this liquid coming from ?

Just be carefu with Dennis Kirk. Bought a set of Continental's off of them years ago only to find out they were dry rotted for being 8 years old. They would not replce the tires. Luckily Continental did. Always check to the date code on the tire !

First off, Happy Birthday:banana::banana:Secondly welcome to the 60's I'm 61 and loving it. Thirdly such good advice! When I was a kid i was painfully over weight. I lost 60lbs and then started excercising and eating right. i moved my little family into a beautiful old country farm house where we tried a little organic farming and enjoyed country nights where you could see every star. I have lived by what you just said and at 61 life seems better than every, Yes the eyes are getting bad, a little artherisis is setting in but I have a beautiful new wife, I've started my first novel. Good advice my friend. Good luck with the challenges ahead of you. We here are rooting for you. -
What he said! Happened to me too. Mine slid down the road and luckily stopped just short of sliding over a 60+ ft .cliff.

HERE'S A PICTURE OF MY OLD HACK OR CHAIR. THE BIKE WAS A 79 YAMAHA XS1100 SET UP FOR TOURING. THE CHAIR WAS A VELOREX 700. I bought the bike because my ex and I got tired of looking for babysitters. Before I put the bike and rig together a spent months studying about riding, set up the rig and the dangers and skills needed to ride. Riding it is a lot of fun and not a skill set many have. Many bikers turn up their noses at sidecars but thats because they don't have the skill to ride them and because they don't consider them motorcycles any more. And they aren't. They're a little like a snowmobile it takes a lot of body english They are a whole different kind of beast. A sidecar expert once said no body rides a sidecar because they want to they ride one because they need to for one reason or another. Anyway I loved mine and enjoyed riding it solo which is the most tricky, especially turning right when the wheel wants to lift up. Its a skill.

I guess I wouldn't have turned down a deal like that either. Wow! Not riding cause he's 53. That's a baby in Venture rider years. Lol! Odd story for me. My Sabre was Honda's original 90 degree V4. It also came with a sport fairing And removable side cases. It was a beautifully looking sport tourer. When they discontinued it and then introduced the St 100 the following year I was upset. The ST is a great bike but always came across as a bit sedate compared to the Sabre. We own a early 80's Silverwing that is the twin cylinder earlier version that I believe the St evolved from. I know the ST is fantastic . Enjoy her.

Happy 48th to you both! Wonderful thing Congratulations.

Believe me Puc sidecars are a lot more fun than that. I had and rode one for 15 years and loved the old girl. the only reason i gave it up was lack of need.

glad you like them. I might add them to the list of tires I'll try in the future. Right after the Elite 3's. Just got my Shinko 230's on did a little cleaning under there too. Good luck with the Commander's

I like the ST 1300 but I'm more partial to the FJR. But you have a beautiful machine there. But I'll guess you'll find that bike just as capable for the long hauls as the venture. Enjoy it. My other bike is my Honda VF1100s Sabre with a windjammer shorty windshield and a full array of sport bike luggage.

Yes this was something I was thinking about this time around. I've never done it before and not even sure if I had the hand strength. -

Well the tires were a lot less than the 404's but by no means cheap. I feel the point I was making is that if I get the same wear, out of the shinko's that I did out of the 404's then I've gotten a bargain in these tires. It might mean I have to change the tires in two years instead of three or even four( if I'm lucky) but to get the Shinko's at half the price of the Dunlops for the same miles is getting a deal. -
Beautiful bike. I mean if you like that sort of thing. Not that i don't like it i do. I mean, Its a free country. people should be free to ride what they want. But do we have to see it??? Flaunting it in our faces like that , I mean My gawd! Oh well..............what was I talking about? Oh yeah very nice Harley.

Very good point Randy. Lol thanks for that. I forgot to consider the weighdistributed between both tires. Anyway. They look good sitting in my living room. I can't wait to see them on the bike. -
Thanks guys. Now I have to get in there and check it out.
