Took the bike to get it inspected. I had worked the horn button a few times and got it working. But at the dealer I couldn't get it to work. I leave the dealer and I can get it to work when the bike is running. I decide to take the bike home and clean the contact points in hopes to get the horn working better. I take the switch control apart and find a lot of dirt in it I clean it with Q tips sprayed with a like windex. I try working the control trying to make the contacts touch but still can't get the switch to . I finish the cleaning and put it all back together all the other controls work fine but the Horn button. I know theres no fuse in the system are there any suggestions as to what i can do next. I can"t figure out why its not working . I know that its a constant feed to the switch and the button simply closes the circuit, If the contacts are touching why wouldn't it be working?

Oh Brian , She looks soooo good. As I look her over and see the parts my Brownie contributed I'm proud to see how good she looks. The body shop did a great job. Enjoy the ride!

had a woman run a red light making a left hand turn right in front of me. did i get hurt? Nope i was driving a ford galaxy 500 at the time and I nailed her broad side spun her car around in the opposite direction and totaled both of our cars. I was only doing 30 mph too. If I'd been on my bike it would have been worse for me. as is my car was totaled but i lived to tell the tale.

remember the V star 1100 is basically the same engine as in the Virago 1100 thats been around a long time. the 1100 is a bullet proof engine and you can find one cheap with lots of extra's like highway lights Windshields and bags. Just something else to consider if price is part of the deal the virago 1100 were made up to 95 or 99 i for get which. But there are a lot around and even though they are more chopper looking they are fairly lightweight with one big torque engine. Or if you want another V4 look into the Honda Magna's750. small light weight but very powerful engine.

Draining the coolant system.
PBJ replied to PBJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yesterday my son came over and we had our own little maintenance day. Changed oils and filters on my bike and his then i got to my radiator. First i remove the chin spoiler and discover the valve was still in the on position. So I loosen the retainer screw( harder than it sounds) and then checked the valve it moved with no problem .Next i opened the drain plug under the water pump to drain the coolant. What came out was very green indicating it had been added recently. What was disturbing was how much came out and that was maybe a little more than a pint! I know the engine and radiator combined had to hold more than that, but it also gave me an indication as to why the thermostat needle has been jumping up and down. So after buttoning everything up i added coolant( with the valve open) let her run added more then shut the valve. Topped off the over flow bottle and was good to go. I took her out and the thermostat started to come up but only up off the needle to the "C". Even under some hard running. What I did forget to do was re-tighten the set screw to the valve. When I got home it was gone. Luckily I have the 85. I'll pull that one. All in all i followed every ones instruction and feel confident "Black hawk" is ready for our ride to the mountains in a few weeks. Thanks again to every one for the good and thorough advice. -

You've got quite a handsome son and a beautiful family there BRIAN. My thanks to your son and his beautiful bride for his years of service to our Nation, and my prayers for his safe and speedy return. -
Just amazing that this thing "floated" over with all that other junk, You'd think it would have fallen off and sank to the bottom somewhere.

HELP! cant get brakes bled!
PBJ replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I was told that there's no pressure to the rear master cylinder its a drip feed thats not under any pressure. But as I pumped my brakes the resevoir eventually went down. FYI: Two years ago I did the brakes on my 85 and my son and I found we had to really pump those suckers to get all the air out, This year i used the pump Bob mentioned and had little trouble. I assume the calipers were working before the brake modification. My rear was in sad shape when I finally got to putting in the new pads. I know there's a proportioning valve AND a metering valve to the front does earls kit effect either of these as it de-links the system? -
Dave, I have one off of an 85 if you decide to got that way, I can't use it on my 86 becuse the 86 control has a push to talk button for the intercom and CB on the same control. let me know if you decide to replace with with a newer version. You can call me at 315 521 3729. Phil.

Draining the coolant system.
PBJ replied to PBJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mike thanks so much for getting back to me with all this good advice. One more reason why i absolutely LOVE This site. Thanks also to Salty Dog for posting the thread link i read through all that too. My Honda Sabre has a radiator as well and its a simple procedure to drain because the coolant is routed through the frame But the over flow tank is under the right side panel Below the radiator level. Anyway Now I know where to go, what to look for and what might become a problem. Thanks again guys I really appreciate all the help! Phil. -
I think Skydoc said it best. But my prayer come your way remember she will live in your heart.

Glad to hear you guys are home safe and a live. Remember Pain is natures way of saying you survived ! Wow, I'm trying to figure out what happened . I remember hearing about a member that had a similar type incident a few years back. His was caused by a soft tire. Could have been losing pressure in the front end or back? Of course if the tires broke their bead during the accident you may not know if that's what it was. but maybe when you get to see the bike check the tires for a nail or if they were soft. Glad to hear you're both relatively okay.

HELP! cant get brakes bled!
PBJ replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Did you ask Earl about this? He should know what might be wrong. Could something have gone wrong in the installation? I still have my linked system intact. I had a soft pedal too upon getting it home. Replaced all pads and it was still soft. Used the vacuum like Bob recommended and then adjusted the pedal and now its like new. The pedal adjustment was the final thing it needed though you'd think with the new pads front and back it wouldn't have. -
My new to me 86 has been sitting for at least 4 years. The previous owner only put 400 miles on it last year. Before that the owner died and his wife kept it 3 years before selling it. I don"t know when the last time the radiator has been flushed and the coolant changed so i want to do that before i get into the meat of the riding season. In my owners manual it shows two point to drain the system. a coolant drain cock coming down off the radiator and a drain plug under the water pump. My question: Which of these two points do members use to drain their coolant? Is the drain cock plastic? will it break? or is the plug under the water pump easier to get to and open? I'd love to know who has used either or both and could you only use one or the other? Thanks.
