    new project.

Well the new Lady (Terri) has been riding with me for over a year and has expressed an interest to looking into riding her own bike. I was looking for a small bike because the Little Lady really is little. 5ft. exactly. We looked at Rebel's and 250 virago's when my sister told me she didn't want her rebel anymore because it was just too small for her. ( she's 6ft.) So we settled on a price and I brought her home. The poor little thing has been sitting under a tarp for years lonely and very neglected. Rust was everywhere and Its taking a can of Neverdull and wet sanding the cases to get it semi shiny again. so here's a before picture. After i get her cleaned up I'll post an after shot. PS. The name on the side says, "Hardley"
  3. well glad it wasn't worse. Remember what Bill Cosby "It could ALWAYS be worse".
  4. I just found an old thread with someone talking about the same problem his answer seemed to be to check and or replace the vacuum line to the #2 carb (left front) to the baro sensor. Along with checking to make sure the carb boots were properly in place so that's where I'll start looking for my leak. Hope this helps others too seems to be a regular problem . Love this site!!!!!
  5. Thanks Kic I'll start there . Any other ideas guys?
  6. Heyy like the trike and the Tike! get it trike , tike Ha Ha ! anyway both look great and so does the proud Grandpa! Enjoy both!
  7. two weeks ago I had a problem i know others have had. It was a hot night and the idle on my bike started to go up. I could not get it down so headed home . there i lubed all my throttle cables and choke linkages then finally readjusted my idle getting it down to around 1000 rpms. i latter realized this may have been a vacuum leak problem and have seen that suggested here by others as well. What I'm looking for here is a previous thread from someone that may have had this problem and hunted down the offending vacuum line so i know where to look and how to fix it to prevent it from happening again. oddly this only happens when its hot. So if anyone knows of a thread like this could you point me in that direction?? Thanks a lot. I like the 86 a lot I have headset for the com system and love the whole set up the bike still has a few bugs to work out from sitting for 5 years but She runs great and I'm enjoying every minute. While working on the radio i did find a cozy mouse nest under the cassette player unit. Luckily not residents at the time.
  8. Yes thats exactly what happened to me It was a hot night and the engine was getting hot. the idle kept climbing and i could not get it down until i readjusted the idle. I only hope now its not too low. But so far so good. But someone here has had to have had this problem before can anyone give me a direction to go? maybe I need to start w a new thread on this ?
  9. Hey Brian my 86 started doing something similar they other day. The engines started running fast idling around 2800 rpms. I couldn"t get it to slow down and I had to head back home and readjust the idle its okay now and idling about 900rpms. But it reminded me of a problem i had with my car and that was also a vacuum advance issue with a cracked hose. i was about to post a new thread until i read this. is this what your bike was doing? I'd like to know so i know what and where to look first. Phil.
  10. Sounds incredibly unpleasent. Hope it goes swiftly and as pain less as possible.
  11. Welcome from Upstate! the Finger lakes area. Some of us are heading to Americade next week Will you be going? Also the International is being held here in New York in August by Big Tom and Tater's. I highly recommend you friend Tom and Bongo Bob and Me amongst others! The Tartan terror is down your way I think and a few others. Check out the members list to see who may be close. and welcome! You're right that $12 buck is money very well spent! Phil. PB&J
  12. These horns were packed with Dirt! Hard encrusted dirt enough to barely let them vibrate I loosened the face bolt gave it a few wraps on the work bench and dirt came flying out. i broke out the air and kept blowing air into them until stuff stopped coming out. I reattached the horns (after cleaning the contacts and taking the opportunity to clean off some rust with Neverdull) adjusted the nut on the face and they both work great. I still want to go for the air horns though!!! Thanks again for all the help.
  13. How would i know if I might already have a progressive spring upgrade done on my 86? I put the Progressive springs in my 85. I've been thinking about transplanting them to the 86 but this bike has several extra's, Progressives could have been added. So how can I tell if the springs in the bike already are Progressives?
  14. I looked for a thread on this but didn't find one. So, I'm heading up this year, missed last year and interested to know who else here is going. I have some friends over and the Honda Shadow ACE tour going and we're talking about a get together for dinner on Tuesday night. I'm going up on Saturday and leaving Wednesday. So I'm putting out an open invitation to any that wll be going to joy us. write me here or call me at 315 521 3729.Phil Lepel (PB&J)
  15. Looks like internal damage like busted cords on the inside. go over any big pot holes? Contact the manufacturer with the mileage you estimate on the tire. They may be interested in seeing it and give you a new tire if you cut out the damaged part and send it to them. Continental sent me a set of tires once when i bought tires from Dennis Kirk that were 8 years old when they sold them to me. they would pass inspection in the spring when I had put them on the previous September. That's when i learned about the tires date code. Anyway can't hurt to contact and ask.
  16. They never tell about they little guys they found layin' all over the ground around the "Weather Balloon":witch_brew:
  17. Brian, i'll check the ground when i can get back to the switch. Should me detector be lighting up on both contact points or just the power? I thought the power line was a constant feed and simply by closing the circuit to the ground activated the horn. (I apologize for being near totally electronic ignorant) First I'm going to remove the horns and check them and the wiring to them as best I can. Bob, I love the sound of the Stiebel's you and Tom have, but I also have a set of horns still on the old 85. If I need to I can pull those. But thanks for the offer. Further progress reports to follow.
  18. Take it easy , get your "sea legs" under you but enjoy a great weekend for riding. i have to work( Limo wine tours) wish i was riding with you.
  19. Been Retired-retired for 5 years and don't have enough time in the day to do everything i want. especially being on here a couple hours a day, working on the bikes or the mustang.
  20. Before i headed off to work today i disassembled the switch again this time with a voltage detector i was able to determine that power is getting to the switch. When i touched the power point the detector lit up. the ground got nothing But press the points together nothing! So, now i know I've got power to the switch now i have to find out if power is getting to the horns and if so why they aren't working. My theory is that, this bike has a mysterious layer of fine light colored dust inside every where. The previous owner told me a story able how the couple that had owned this bike had travelled to Alaska on a Venture. But he didn't say specifically that it was this one. He only said mine was the third one they had owned. The bike only has 35k on it. Could it have gone to Alaska and back? Has anyone ridden the TransAlaska Higway? I here its pretty rough in spots could this fine dust have come from miles of riding that road or others similar to it? Next week I'll remove the horns to see it they"re caked with the stuff. I'll keep you posted.
  21. here's the sad thing about all that. They could have come into the store and asked around for you to see if you or someone you knew had a spare and you could have asked any of us that do have spares and we could have helped out. Instead these idiots made a new enemy for themselves and still didn't get the part. hey theres an answer leave a note strapped to the turn signal saying "If you need a turn signal come ask me either I or one of my friends can help you out." then you can decide to have them arrested or ask one of us for a turn signal. Win/Win.
  22. Thanks guys i'll start trouble shooting it today i appreciate the good advice. SUCH A LITTLE THING BUT WHAT A PAIN IN THE A$$.
  23. then you got a great deal.
  24. no but I think my son may have one. I can get him to bring it over. what should i do?
  25. well i tried not to effect the wires in any way and it was working somewhat before. the solder looked intact to the switch. not sure what i might have over looked. I even used an exacto blade to scrap the faces of the contacts to insure they were clean.
