I've been through the forum looking for info on oil for the 2nd Gen Ventures. I recently did an oil change and used Yama Lube and a Yamaha filter no probs. I've not seen much information of people using Synthetic oils in the bikes like you would on other bikes. (05 VStar has been running nicely on AMSOIL, smoother, quieter and cooler). In regards to the 'whine' of the engine, would synthetic oils quell this down a tad more? Or are synthetics not recommended on these bikes for a certain reason or another? CHeers

Mistake buying a Venture?
Seaking replied to Trainwreck68's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If I may? I bought my 06 Midnight Venture used from a private party without knowing too much about these bikes except that my friends who have them absolutely love them. Because my bike was bought in the USA and brought into Canada by the previous owner, there NO warranty what so ever on this bike. That sucks. But would there be warranty if I were visiting the USA in my travels? I notice I have that loud whine noise in certain gears and speed, mostly to do with the 'load' put on the engine.. While on CB, I was just about to ask my friend if his bike was making this loud whine noise but when he started talking, I could overhear the whining of HIS bike through the headsets. Another friend's Venture, an 07 Midnight does the same thing so I'm sorta comfortable with knowing that the amount of whine from my engine is normal.. annoying yes, but livable.. that's why ya gots the tunes to down it out lol. This is an awesome bike, I almost wished it had been my first bike ; ) -
Time to grease Clutch Hub Drive Pins
Seaking replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just recently having changed tires on the bike I found the rear wheel removal / installation to be quick a breeze so you could easily do this task yourself.. Not that hard, just need a jack, the proper everyday tools and some grease. -
My 2006 Midnight Venture is a yank bike but has KPH readings on the lower gauge part.. After installing and breaking in a new pair of Elite 3's (front & back) I had an opportunity to try out this speed, by accident. My friend and I were pulling onto a divided highway and his 800 Drifter, which is geared weirdly is capable of doing 120 kph in 2nd gear just as it's hitting the rev limiter. (I'm not joking).. So when he pulled up to me in 2nd gear at that speed I dropped the hammer on my Venture and left him soooo far behind.. I looked down at my speed and the needle was buried at 180 kph (112.5 mph). Yoikes! I let go the throttle and it took the needle a solid few seconds to come off the 180 mark.. To me that says I went in excess of 180 kms / 112 mph.. I had put that speed minder or speed calibration device on my VStar last year and yes it does recalibrate your speedo to where it should be. However, the error is indeed exponential which means the faster you go, the bigger the error. So when I'm reading 120 kph on the highway, the bike is actually only doing 110 kph as confirmed by my Garmin Zumo GPS. And when traveling a lower speed, the difference is lower. 65 pkh on the gauge is actually 60 kph on the GPS. So instead of going through the rigamarole of installing another speed minder, I just do the quick math for speed. (In NB and NS we have 110 kph highways.. too bad QC and ON don't ; ) Installing a Dyna3000 will allow you to reset the rev limiter, thus allowing you more speed.. but you have to be careful, as factory presets are there for a reason.. but it's on the generous side of things. Without a tach on this Venture, I have no idea where on the band I'm riding. Now I'm just waiting for the rains to stop so I can get out again !!

My New Clearview Windshield
Seaking replied to Tom's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I know not to put RainX on a stock windshield as it will haze it out but on these new Clearviews you can? I saw this on their site also but also question if it's that safe or not.. IS the material they use that much different that it's safe to use? Thanks for the response.. Cheers -
My New Clearview Windshield
Seaking replied to Tom's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm highly interested in one of these as the previous owner of my 06 Midnight Venture had cut the original shield down to a height where the top of the shield is right where I see.. I have to duck down to see through the plexi or sit up more to see over, especially at night when it rains.. ouch. On my previous bike, an 05 VStar, I use to look over the windshield and yet not feel any buffeting on the head.. However on the Venture, my helmet catches the wind more often than not and it's not comfortable.. Couldn't tell you much of what the passenger feels as I ride solo. If ordering one of these windshields, I'm not sure if I want to see 'through' it or 'over' it.. I like the vent idea to get ride of the behind the screen burble.. I bought this bike for the joyful ride in comfort compared to the hair on fire ride on my current VStar ; ) I'm new to the Venture, can someone help me decide which height would be best for me? Cheers -
I used the same ones on my VStar and they will last you a long time.. Wagner beams come in a variety of flavours (amber for fog, spots (focused) and floods (wide angle).. Cheers

Intermittent Radio Channel Selection
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That's an idea.. we did have the fairing off to redo some shoddy wiring work, things might have come 'loose-ish' What a fantastic site for ideas and advice.. Many thanks! -
There's ABS brakes on these bikes?!?! lol Cheers M8

Intermittent Radio Channel Selection
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks M8.. I was hoping this had happened to someone before.. the bike has been sitting out in the weather for a day so most probably caught some condensation inside.. hopefully that's all there is to it.. Cheers -
From what I see the 'welding kits' are awesome kits but because of where and how this bracket is busted I don't think you can apply it here.. might be best to use the filings acetone method or the straight up ABS Glue.. or JB Weld.. fill that square hole up with the material to give it tons of strength to hang on to.. . Thanks for all the replies.. Cheers

This started today, not sure if it's weather related or not.. muggy, a wee sprinkling of rain on the bike today. Whilst riding the bike, I use the up/down buttons to go through the preselected channels.. all worked fine until today when it started to be non-responsive.. It wouldn't change channels at all.. But after a few mins it would work ok. When to problem occurs, the "band" number (upper left FM1, FM2 etc) would show as normal but the channel number (lower left) doesn't appear, just the channel itself.. Is this a common problem with a common fix?? Cheers

Many thanks! Much appreciated.

I tried dropping you a priv messge but kept getting this error message BB code size is not allowed. BB code font is not allowed Anyway, your friend said I should ask you about the ABS welding kit you guys recently used for repairs.. Cheers
-
I did some research on these 'kits' and for what I can see it is quite good for sheet panel stuff and fairing but not for sharp angles mounts like the one I need done.. From what I've read, you see to make a V-Groove channel into which to run the bead of 'weld' into.. this is kinda impossible if not impractical for my application.. But we'll see.. I'll be dropping down at this local shop this coming monday and see what they have.. Thanks again

I found a local shop that claims to be able to do plastic welding and able to fix my part.. at worse case scenario, the pipe glue approach may well work.. Many thanks to all for the info.. Cheers
-
ergh.. disappointing wot? the latch catch on the trunk lid came off the lid last night. a clean break. Right now when you close the trunk, only one side latches. Apart from purchasing a new trunk lid, is there a proper method and materials for welding the ABS plastics together strongly enough for this area? Cheers

new 2006 Midnight on Road.. w000t
Seaking posted a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hi guys, just a note to say thanks to thems that what helped out with the multitude of questions about the 06 Midnight Venture I picked up. While convalescing from surgery last week, my buddies serviced the bike for me, oil change, spark plugs, new tires (E3's), fixed up some gnashed wiring, and installing an ear splitting air horn under the bat wing fairing, etc.. A week after surgery I took the beast out for a casual careful ride (new tires need to be scuffed) and to make sure I could handle it.. I mean I feel strong but ya know how it is.. Holy wow.. nice. Those tires severely wakened the bike up as she really wants to lean for it's size and now, it really doesn't feel top heavy as it did on the previous tires (rear E3 was barely legal worn and the front E2 was scalloped), this made for a huge handling difference. But now wow.. tomorrow is a full day of riding, get the scuff on the tires and burn some gas =) Only ran into one glitch though, the hazard lights stopped working.. signals are OK but no 4 way flashers.. Will post that one in another thread.. But ooooh nice.. My poor broken customized VStar is going to have to wait to get repaired now awww.. -
A small micro switch on the gas tank cowling, to the left of the ignition switch is where the works are held. A small drill hole for the momentary switch and the guts are hid under the cowling (I think that's what they calls it?) When I get the bike here I'll do up a proper show & tell.. pics and all.. ; )

New 2006 Venture, gots questions...
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
And that was the other option.. locally there is a gent who does recovering with a material that helps reduce monkey ass and at the same time will see about shaving the back of the seat.. so I sit a wee bit further back into a bucket and not so much up on the boys (ouch) thanks for the additional option idea.. cheers -
thanks for the great advice gents.. I know of those tabs you refered to as some of the VStar components are like that as well.. this coming winter I'll look into having this filter relocated as it really should be changed often enough for best performance.. right? cheers M8.. much appreciated

I guys, got a lot of work done on the 06 Midnight Venture last night with my ride buddy turning the wrenches.. We've changed the oil, spark plugs, rad levels and rear diff oil.. and installed an Air Horn in the front cowling (ouch loud), and a garage door opener. We tried to change the fuel filter but halted when we realized we weren't contortionists and weren't ready to dismantle half of the bike to get at the filter. Are we missing something obvious here, is there a painfully obvious route to access to the fuel filter or do you have to disassemble everything around fuel pump? Tomorrow, wheels come off to get the tires changed.. Cheers

New 2006 Venture, gots questions...
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Interesting concept indeed.. I have the full backrest (comes with velcroed purse?).. At these prices I might give it a try until I can run into someone with proper seats to test out.. Thanks M8 -
New 2006 Venture, gots questions...
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I pounded the miles on the bike soon as I got it due to my being laid up the following week so the 500 miles, it could be more as I put over 3 tanks of gas through it at around 200 miles per fueling.. Though i could walk and sit afterwards, I was doing a lot of 'shifting' in my seat to get comfortable for the longer runs of 30-60 minutes.. So yeah.. pushing for something more comfortable. The one thing I'd hate is to purchase a new seat and only afterwards find out it wasn't comfortable at all.. and a waste of coins.. and there's usually no way to find out early.. I do like the idea of lower on the Corbin but yes, I do find them on the hard side.. Cheers M8
