Thanks Goose, next time I go to sync up I'll check that as well.. (see if all four are set right).. You would think the carb tune was calibrated at the factory, right?? I don't have a tach on my 06 so I have to do it on idle..

Well that was fun.. Running down our local curvey road late at night and having your head light low beam go out on ya.. oops.. All I could find in any documentation about replacing the bulb on this 2006 Midnight is "replace bulb with..." Thanks, I knew that (derrrr) but do I have to remove the fairing or is this simply down by taking the chrome ring from the front of the fairing to access the light bucket? Right now I'm riding with High Bean with the bucket aimed low but need to get this fixed soon. Thanks in advance..

Engine or tranny rattles. Normal???
Seaking replied to buford7657's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My 2006 Midnight started to make a 'tin' kind of rattle noise at low rpms, usually when coasting through slow traffic.. Uhtoh... But it turned out to be the left front fork shroud rattling.. But I don't know how to tighten it down properly to stop it from doing it.. But because I know what it is, I'm not worried about it.. (wrapped it with bungee which stopped the rattling, thus identifiying the source). -
I noticed my Carb Tune rods would settle to a diff spot if I gently tapped the tubes while making the adjustments and that would change the settings.. After 1000 miles of riding I didn't notice a fuel consumption change.. What was the article you found about cleaning the guage?

115 mph and room to go further...

Well that was the funny part today as well.. the crotch rocket kid coming off the ramp behind me to get on the highway peeled out to the left to go around 'grampa on the geezer glide' but all he got was some Armin VanBurren in his face as I dropped the hammer and cranked the tunes LOLOL... When I pulled in at the next Timmies up the road he pulled in after me to see what I had under the hood and where the nitrous was hidden.. LOL.. I'm pretty sure he could have taken me with his bike but I believe it was the sheer surprise of it all that caught him off guard LOL.. This is now a dangerous toy.. I need to get back to the rolling couch mode for a while.. until caution takes more precendence over stupidity hehe.. (I'm actually getting an adrenalin rush the past couple of days.. wow.. ) Dayum.. this is some fun bike!! -

I got it figured out now.. hehe.. JUST before it sounds like it will explode SHIFT GEARS!!! hehehe.. anyway that's what it sounds like to me.. but man when you hammer through the gears it's like the double tap of a Voodoo's J79 Afterburners kicking in (we flew them until the mid 80's).. whoa.. im-freaking-pressive!!!! =) -

Well what ever it was, I didn't see it as I was too busy GRINNING myself stoopid as I hit the rev limiter through the gears.. Now you'll have to forgive me as I had to test this out this past evening.. I came onto the highway via on-ramp and dropped the hammer and wasn't going to let go until I either felt the rev limiter or I blew the engine.. fun huh? Whereas in the past I thought the bike was peppy and super fast, well me son, lemme tell you that when you REALLY hit the powerband on this puppy, the darn machine gets some ripe excited.. I think I actually scared myself when I sailed through the gears and hit the rev-limiter just before shifting.. what a kick in the pants it is.. wow.. yeah so.. the best I can say is that first gear limits at around 40 and 2nd around 60 and after that it's a blur.. Talk about feeling tingly after that... I hope I didn't scare the crotch rocket kids as I blew their decals of the bikes ; ) w0000t -
Many thanks M8, hadn't seen that link.. Lemme know if you find more info on the power amp links.. I must admit that the sounds coming out of those speakers from my iPod Nano is brilliant compared to the radio.. crisp and clear but lacking in bass when at highway speeds and higher volume (level 16 or 18).. Does install Bass Blockers make it possible to raise the audio level to say 20 or 22 and yet not suffer too much distortion? The radio controller on my bike has a treble / bass adjustment on it.. doesn't this do the same-ish kinda-ish thing? Cheers M8

115 mph and room to go further...

Oh wow, seriously?! 1st gear to 40-45 MPH?!?! Geesus, I don't think I've taken it up to there in first.. I always thought I was over killing the engine (so used to V-Twins) I'll be out for a boot and skoot tonight and will give it a try to see if I can reach the rev limiter.. I should also check see if the previous owner had a Dyna3000 in there too.. It's not that I'm afraid of taking the bike up to speed but simply not used to the 4 cylinder noises.. ; ) Thanks again for the info! -
115 mph and room to go further...

I've buried the needle on mine a couple of times already, that's PAST 120 MPH! When I rolled off the throttle, it took several seconds for the speedo to come off the peg and start showing 'de-acceleration'.. Scary? not really as the bike is very very well behaved at those speeds (riding on E3 tires). The last time I buried the needle and gone as fast as stupidity would allow me, I counted to 10 mississipis (sp) before the needle reacted again.. Taking into consideration for reaction lag, the 8 to 10% error factor Japanese bikes have on speedo and speed (110 KPH real speeds shows 120 kph on my speedo), I have NO idea how fast this bike is going. I honestly do not know if the Rev Limiter is actually working on this bike as I can't seem to force myself to bring the engine up to that high a rev to find out if there IS one or not. On my VStar, it's easy to find and comfortable to feel, knowing you have a lot of spare room before getting anywhere near damaging your engine. But on this 2006 Venture, I simply don't know where it is.. SO.. in first and second gear, how fast can you safely go and have the rev limiter kick in? In other words, if I find myself doing 50 mph in 1st gear, but the rev limiter is supposed to kick in at 35 mph, then I would know that I'm killing my engine as the rev limiter isn't working.. I mean, there *IS* a Rev Limiter on these bikes, right? I bought mine used from an elderly gent who didn't seem the type who would mod his bike outright like erhm *I* would.. BUT the story remains the same, ride safe, and if you ride stupid, make sure you sign your donor card.. ; ) -
Rear Shock replacement question
Seaking replied to bobbyduck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
UPS eh? Be sure to lubricate before accepting parcels from UPS... You know what I mean ; ) Good luck on your trip! -
Thanks for the links.. Can you recommend which Bass Blockers would be best to use? Unfortunately, the numbers don't mean much to me, I just like my tunes loud and clear.. Can anyone recommend where a Canuck can purchase these speakers? Seems Crutchfield's can't ship to Canada.. sigh.. So much for the global market.. Google doesn't show much available elsewhere.. Cheers!
-
As far as I can tell my speakers are stock and I have no probs with hearing the audio, talk or music at highway speeds (160 kms even oops).. The only complaint I get is from my fellow riders.. my stereo is so loud they say that they can't hear their loud pipes.. I don't know if that's true or not as *I* can't hear their pipes =) Good thread this, lots of info.. I have a new windscreen coming in next month so this would be the time to check it out.. Cheers and thanks to all who have responded..

Thanks M8.. buddy was looking to sell his Sony's but they were 5.5 inches, good qual but wrong size.. Hmm I'll check out the Polks, just for reference in case I need replacement.. Cheers!
-
I always downshift from 5th to 1st-ish.. how else to enjoy that low rumble even from stock pipes =) I've learned to be careful at the lower gears as I've locked the rear wheel and chirped the tire by being too aggressive.. ouch. But all's good.

Tres kewl but try your 'map book' while making the passage through Montreal at rush hour on your way through QC and see how well that works for you.. I swear, you make the wrong turn or pick the wrong lane at the wrong time and you're now hours trying to make it back, and worse if going through there during a storm.. With the Garmin 450 on the bike, it'll tell you which lanes to stay in for how long.. as on that route you need to exit left or right depending where you're going. A map book is a great tool no doubt.. but I find it handier to listen to the lady tell me where to go safely than trying to read a map book while cagers are trying to run me over.. But that's just me.. ; ) You're right though, for 90% of the time, an old fashion analog page flipping map book will suffiice.. but it's them 10 % of the time I appreciate my GPS on the bike.

Synching carbs super easy on this bike.. I spent an hour being 'finiky' about it and got the bike super smooth now.. impressive! For some reason I tend to ride super fast if I don't watch the speedo.. cause ya can't tell how fast you're going.. except of all the suddenly slow cars on the highway.. Hmm.. The carbs were horribly out of synch before I synched them up and I was getting 44 mph and I'm still averaging the same.. Synching didn't seem to improve milage at all.. however, it makes for one heck of a better ride. =)

Trunk Latch Bracket Revisited (fixed)
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I got mine at Canadian Tire, automotive glue section.. it comes in one bottle for the cleaner and a squeeze tube for the glue.. Funny enough I couldn't find the same stuff at the Permatex website but they do show this product for ABS welding that should work: http://www.permatex.com/products/Automotive/adhesives_sealants/epoxies/Permatex_PermaPoxy_5_Minute_Plastic_Weld.htm The stuff I got has the UPC 302113 if that will help you.. I've since fixed someone else's cowling on their bike and it's holding up quite well.. at least it's not flapping in the wind hanging on by the decal anymore lol.. Cheers -
Oh man.. what success, w0000t! Rode the bike through a full tank last night and wow, synching up them carbs make a whole diff in the ride.. it took the 'lumpiness' out of the 5th gear riding, smoothed out the ride even more (and I thought it was a smooth ride before doing it).. Have to be careful though, not sure if it's the smoothness of the ride but I did find myself riding at a consistently higher speed if I wasn't watching the speedo.. weird eh? However, I realize I didn't quite do the synch 100% right as I did not have the restrictors in place and did the synch with a little throttle on the engine, and didn't do it in idle as many suggested. However, the synch is diff at idle than it is with some throttle on the engine. A little tweaking here and there and she'll be nice. Once the mirror buzz goes away, and there is no 'lumpiness' to be found, I think I found the sweet spot. So much more fun when you have your own toys to play with and not having to pay a shop to do this simplest of tasks for you.. !! Did I say "w000t" already?! hehe

It doesn't come with the car adapter.. I got mine included because they had mistakenly advertised it as a same package as the 550... but when I received it minus all the add ones, and called them up on it, they thanked me for pointing out the mistake and sent me all the add ons anyway. Good customer service. (And yes they quickly fixed their site details, Garmin as well ; ) I was one of the first Canadians to purchase the 450/550 Zumo hence why the mistaked wasn't picked up right away.. the 450 is cheaper to buy but I would have gone the 550 if I were buying one today.. Either model is awesome. Cheers Oh and yes, you can play the MP3s through your Venture's sound system AUX channel. I have an 8G card in mine to hold pics and tunes (I'm a photographer as well so this serves me well to carry my portfolio around with me =)

Anyone here........
Seaking replied to BoomerCPO's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just the info I needed, 4-2-4's are prolly TOO loud for what I need. I have the Cobra HP Pro 2in1 on my VStar and those are just the right tone and loudness for my liking.. the previous V&H Classics were obnoxious.. but fun loud.. but harsh.. I checked out the video and those pipes didn't sound too obnoxiously loud (nice idle rumble) even when he barked it.. Nice looking pipes! What do you mean about Road King Mufflers and "boring them out" to fit? I have a local fella looking to sell his Screamin' Eagle pipes for a decent price. He had these on his Venture before he sold the bike.. These made the bike sound like a heavy V8 engine, deep rumble, louder than stock but not painfully so.. prolly 10 db's more. Might have to get a look at these soon.. Thanks for the info M8 -
I had previously posted a query about how to repair the broken rear trunk lock bracket which broke off the lid. A lot of suggestions forwarded and a lot of attempts 'attempted' but they failed unfortunately.. Even using the ABS glue and sealant, making a slurry trick didn't work (poor man's welding). No matter what I had tried, a day's ride and vibes would break the bond. I can now happily say I have the lock bracket glued and secured in place for the past 2 weeks with a lot of locking useage, variable heat and humidity and vibes to really put the test to it and it's a good bond.. this one ain't going to come apart. Ultra Bond Plastic Expoxy... It comes in a purple package, comes in the typical 2 parts mini-containers. You brush on one liquid to both parts and let dry 30 secs, and then apply a bead to one part, and press together for 30 secs.. full solid bond in 24 hours as most 2 part epoxies do.. I tried to find an online image of the package to make it easier for others to locate but to no avail.. Oh and when they say "caution, bonds skin instantly" they mean it.. kewl. The product causes the two parts to melt and bond, basically 'welding' to each other very nicely. So, after 2 weeks, the bracket is rock solid and shows no signs of fatigue or re-cracking. I still have the package in the trunk, if someone is desperate enough to need to see it I can do a pic and post it.. etc.. FYI to a fix that actually worked.. =)

Not sure if one is better than the other but do make sure to clean out the old grease completely so that you don't end up with a mixture..

I just did mine the other day and the 3 - 4 carbs were way out and the left right banks were out enough to need adjustment. After all was said and done, I don't think there is much gas mileage improvement but it's one heck of a smother ride, though previously wasn't very bad, it's a lot better. Go figure eh?
