It's not under warranty hence why I made mention of it.. bought it used.. non-transferable warranty crossing the border.. go figure.. thanks Yammy

The book says the steering neck needs to be 'repacked' after so many miles (16,000 miles) My 06 Midnight bike is 'way' over that (no warranty) and I'm wondering if this is one of those checks not really required as it's rare to find anything wrong or is it something you really should have checked out after a certain while..? I ask as my bike started to demonstrate a strange wobbly-wop in turns at gentler turns and speeds.. nothing to scare you but something you can feel in the bars.. I had the front wheel checked for scalloping (low tire pressure) but this is not the case.. Would this be an indication I should have those bearing repacked and checked? The bike will be up on jacks soon so it would be an opportune time to do some 'front end checks' if there were any to check for this? Cheers

I was going to do the drain ON and RES test this morning but the 40 mph winds prevent that lol.. I am going to have to wait after I'm done working on thursday to do all this.. filters, plugs, audio fix and now fuel issues.. get it all done in one shot.. sigh.. Prob is that the bike is my only mode of transport right now until the end of the week..

Thanks, I'll give it a try.. however, when sitting on the bike looking down at the tank, where abouts is this float located? I'd hate to be prodding around inside a fuel tank risking breaking something more lol.. Cheers (When you start your bike, turn ignition switch to the on position, do you see your fuel low light come on momentarily?)
-
I'll be working on it later this morning and will try the fuel float jiggle to see if it works.. Funny enough though, when you turn on your ignition, would this light not turn on as a test like you would see all your warning lights in your car for example.. in my Honda, when I start the car, all warning and advisory lights come on momentarily to let me know the bulbs aren't burnt out.. When I do this with the bike, I never see the low fuel light come on.. STRANGE.. BTW, yes, the petcock lever is indeed ALL the way up and over past the OFF position.. vertically UP and DOWN positions for ON and RES.. A common mistake people make and I had others check that for me to ensure I wasn't just making a silly mistake on my part allowing me to run out of gas on the side of the road .. I'll send back a shout what I find out when my drain tests.. Thanks all.

I wish, it was a used US bike bought in Canada thus null warranty.. sucks eh? but got it at a superb price, no worries

Many thanks, according to what I see on the image, it looks possible for the RES tube to be clogged and not allow a feed of fuel.. The bike is a 2006 Midnight Special.. Although another kerniption is amiss as the the low fuel light doesn't engage before I hit reserve.. What might be the cause of that, I wonder.. This light is supposed to come on before hitting reserve fuel, no? Thanks to all for your comments and help.. it is much appreciated.

Thanks to both respondents, I should have thought of that on my own but being tired and befuddled by a second occurrence of the problem I didn't think of draining the fuel out to that level.. (der!) Cheers

Ok, this has happened to me twice and now I'm at a loss as to what to do.. Allow me to describe the issue and hopefully someone can come up with a viable suggestion. On two occasions, I've basically run out of fuel, without a low fuel light, with the petcock in the RUN position (long end of lever DOWN). When the bike started to chug chug as it does when hitting the reserve levels, turning the petcock to RES (long end of lever vertically UP), the engine cough sputters and dies. The fuel quantity gauge shows 2 or 3 bars.. On both occasions, I've put a measured amount of fuel into the gas tank and refilled at the nearest gas station to a total amount of roughly 16L.. which means, the gas tank had more than it's Reserve Fuel quantity still in it, but unavailable! Whoa.. what gives? Books says it's a 22.5 litre tank with a 3.5 reserve.. so when I hit reserve, I should be at the 19 litre mark, right? In another thread, it was suggested to remove the petcock and check see if the system was working properly.. Unfortunately I haven't the location to start pulling such parts off the bike.. But I was able to perform a quick trouble shooting test.. but with unfamiliar results. The problem encountered would suggest that when I get to the reserve fuel amount, turning the petcock to RES results in fuel NOT making it to the engine and starving the engine of fuel.. Ahh OK.. so lets do a quick test here.. The fuel tank is FULL at this point.. My assumption is that there might be a problem with the RES fuel feed at the petcock but not fully understanding how it works nor having a proper diagram/drawing of what it looks like, I am assuming that there is something blocking the fuel feed when the petcock is in the RES position.. However, with a full tank of gas, when I put the petcock to RES with the fuel line disconnected, I observe a full stream of fuel passing through the petcock indicating to me that there is no blockage... Unless perhaps the system permits fuel from a FULL tank of gas to by pass a blocked RES feed path at the petcock (dunno if this makes sense the way I am explaining it) Am I doing this wrong whereas I really need to empty the tank with the petcock turn to the ON position, and then turn the petcock to see if there is a blockage? Dang I wish I had a garage to play in..

A good question to ask but I have it on the proper indication.. long end of the pointer down for ON and up for RES.. and set all the way around for RES.. I'll be getting to some work on the bike next week (teaching this weekend) and will get to testing all advices and comments.. Thanks in advance.

I hear what you're saying and not disagreeing with your wealth of experience on the matter.. I'm only pointing to my own observations over the course of 15,000 miles since I've gotten the bike as to what I have seen.. Just as a note, if I hear another Yank whining about the price of gas again I'll toss them a rubber chicken.. My gosh.. the most it cost me to top up my bike was $10US while that same amount of fuel would have cost me $17CDN.. even after exchange rate you guys have cheap gas compared to us up here.. dayum!! I know where I'm doing all my road trips this summer lol.. However, I will be running reg vice premium fuel in the RSV and see how it feels for fuel consumption.. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

What ever you do NEVER purchase that light bar.. I had bought one for my VStar and the damn thing was nothing but a pain in the assets.. proprietary bulbs and a weak as heck metal light bar that cracked, peeled and rusted within the first season and broke off in the second season.. garbage!! I hated it so much I thought I oughta warn you..
-
Thanks for all the sage info, Goose.. I'll follow through and let you know what I find out.. going to switch back to regular instead of premium and see what happens with the performance and fuel mileage.. I'll try the petcock tests as prescribed and let you know. Cheers, much appreciated!

hey Boo, no all those MPGs were US Gallons to Miles as my bike is US and I was filling up in the USA on this trip.. and most of you guys are yanks so it's easier to keep it simple for you guys Just kidding.. Those numbers I sent were in US gallons..
-
I shall be checking out the petcock and reserve tubing as several have suggested.. sound like that might have been the culprit.. Where does the low fuel light get it's signal from? As far as reg and premium gas goes, my exhaust is sooty dry compared to my friend's exhaust and we both run premium.. However.. at my next fill up, I will go several tanks of gas at regular fuel to test this out and see what comes of it. The cost differences from reg to premium isn't that much on a fill up but it's about getting more range and endurance from that same tank of gas.. Premium had proven to have longer legs on my bike... Mine is a 2nd Gen RSV so no worries Thanks for the comments, something to check out when I get a break..

Ahh so you know the place.. beautiful.. We may be back in August using it as a base of operations as we boot around the area.. Cheers!

I'll be changing the plugs soon and will check that line out as you suggested, thanks.. My face is burning from the sun and wind lol.. ouch.. It only hurts when I smile

Can anyone recommend where a Canadian can purchase a color tune kit for a 2006 RSV? (which size, 12mm?) and a clamp on tach? The only tachs I can find are all in the US and for what ever strange reason they can ship to Canada.. what is it, top secret technology? My exhaust IS sooty compared to the other RSV bikes I checked out so I'm guessing I'm running rich.. (I have K&N filters and Screamin Eagle pipes and burn premium) Any help would be appreciated.. Anyone know where to get the appropriate 10 psi air pump for the front shocks? Thanks in advance! Cheers

99 RSV Gas Mileage
Seaking replied to Yamastretch's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
hi guys, back from my trip.. From Halifax NS to Waterville ME for the night, then to Boston, up to the "Hampdens" to see bikinis.. wow and hot weather, and then up to Freeport, back down to Portsmouth, across to Manchester, up to Merideth, overnight in Gorham after freezing through the White Mountain pass east side of Mt Washington.. brrrr (Town and Country Inn was FAB with jacuzzi and steam room after that frigid ride lol) A total of 1550 miles in all.. my gosh, I know people who don't come close to putting that on their bikes all summer long! lol What I can tell you about my riding habits and my bike's mileage was an eye opener to say the least.. ride it like ya stole it will get me 39 MPG while driving like Miss Daisy though the mountains at 40 to 60 mph gets me 46 MPG.. Big enough difference to get you on average an additional 20 to 25 miles out of a tank, I think.. 160 miles compared to 180 miles before fill up. A few more tuning, new plugs, clean filters out and so on will sort out the rest I believe.. I guess the gist of the story is that I'm prolly riding my RSV like I ride my customised VStar.. like I stole it.. ahem.. OK.. point taken -
Hi guys, just got back from a wild 3 day road trip that saw my buddy and I leave Halifax Nova Scotia, and ended up all over New England and back on what was basically a wild riding trip.. not a lot of sight seeing but ride and ride and ride.. the RSV makes this an awesome touring machine.. I'd have to say it was my first balls to the walls road trip on this bike and I can still walk today =) We did 16 hours on the bike yesterday from Gorham NH to Halifax through strangest of back roads, highways and a small border crossing out of nowhere.. wild fun. However, it wasn't without a glitch or two that has me puzzled.. In previous messages I had mentioned how bad a mileage I get on my RSV with a tall wide windshield, how I get better mileage with the short windsield and running on premium gas but that I would get inconsistent gas mileage mostly attributable to winds and driving habits. Traveling with a buddy who has a 2008 RSV, I had something to compare my riding to. The only difference between our bikes is that I have K&N filters and Screamin Eagle pipes. We both burn premium and since he's following me on this, his first road trip, our driving styles were basically the same. (my bike is US while his is Canadian hence the difference in numbers coming up) Our first day out this past sunday I ran out of fuel at the 163 miles.. heavy cross winds, and only 2 miles short of our intended gas stop.. 3 bars showing on the fuel gage.. NO yellow fuel low light.. I switched to RES on the petcock and nothing.. the engine died and costed to the side of the highway.. Bike wouldn't start. Utoh.. I jump on his bike, get gas and the bike would ONLY start again with the petcock on RUN and full choke.. chuh chug.. vroom... and choke off and it ran normal. When we got to the gas station just 2 miles down the road, I filled up the tank and the whole amount added (jerry can and pump) was 16 litres.. Basically the amount you run to at RES.. so the bike wasn't empty at all.. just that the RES wouldn't feed fuel from the reserve amount.. Strange huh? My buddy's fuel useage was about 14.8 litres, not too far off from my useage.. but the fact is that I had reserve amount but it wouldn't feed to the engine.. this is the second time this year I got caught short like this.. What causes this?! Does cross winds have anything to do with it? Does the wind, leaning the bike to one side on the highway deny fuel to the petcock enough to starve the engine of fuel when on RES?? The rest of the trip was without incident and road the bike down to 2 bars 180 miles showing and no ill effect.. windy days, hilly roads, cold and hot.. all was good but that one frikken cross wind day has me wondering.. what the heck! I had pulled the air filters before the trip and they looked clean and nice red coloured (K&N) and synch'd the carbs, seafoam into the gas tank a coupla times this spring already (I ride a lot.. not just a weekend warrior).. But this lack of range really got me worried.. However, this road trip did show me a coupla things about my mileage though.. Traveling speeds and headwinds make a HUGE difference on how far you can go.. Slow ride through the mountains, 40 to 60 miles per hour got me 46 MPG Fast highway speeds 60 to 70, driving hard, 39 MPG Fast highway speeds, heavy winds, cross winds etc 30 MPG But I never went past 180 miles on the trip ODO as it was close to the 2 bars and made me nervous. The fact that my buddy was fuel less into his bike by .8 gallons on average got him better milage with his bike. Nice.. But running out of fuel with still the reserve fuel onboard REALLY has me worried.. Any thoughts?

Let us know when they're up.. right now it's a nil-fault page site.. -
Just in case you were wondering

Those brackets came with the Screamin Eagle slipons I bought for my 06 Midnight.. nice sound to them.. Reinharts next maybe? I love the sounds they make on a 'Glide.. dunno what they would sound like on a V4 though.. -
99 RSV Gas Mileage
Seaking replied to Yamastretch's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I basically don't do the Miles Per Gallon calculations, but basically do the "how far on a tank of gas can I do" and I general go much farther on a premium tank than a regular tank of gas. My 06 Midnight Venture, with K&N filters and Screamin Eagle pipes will roughly get me 1 litre per 10 miles of distance.. The bike, being a US bike, has it's ODO set in miles while I pump my fuel in litres. So when I run 160 miles distance, I would average out 16 litres to top it up full. If it takes me 15 litres then I am doing better but it's it takes more than my milage is down.. not scientific but it's a good marker, 1 litre per 10 miles on the odo. Last fall, I did my fuel runs to see if a reg or premium fuel grade would make any difference, I would average out more distance on the tank of premium fuel that it was cheaper to run premium.. Go figure.. what can I tell ya.. 3 cents a litre more for premium but I get farther on that tank.. However, this year, I've started to tune my carbs better, and soon looking into colortuning as well.. -

If I am not mistaken, 87 90 and 92 octane fuel is what's available here.. (reg med and high) (Bronze Silver and Gold) (good best and better) thems the ratings I remember lol..
