Argh.. I have the bike tuned up, oil, air, plugs and synch'd and today experienced yet another mysterious shut down while riding.. First time was a few days ago while cruising 70 mph in 4th.. it simply switched off.. Pulled over.. started up again and everything was fine. 3/4 tank of gas, no incident with the next 5 tank fulls and 4 days.. Earlier today while doing errands, in city streets, the bike up and quit again.. huh? Wait a few secs on the side of the road and flashed it up OK and no probs riding it after that.. Highway, back roads and so forth.. In both instances I did not 'accidentally' hit the kill switch. The bike simply died. When it dies, it's almost feeling like the engine isn't making power and then nuttin.. bleh, dead. I'm heading out on a road trip to PA this sunday, I'd really like to know what gives.. Is it possible it's shutting down due to a thermal shut down switch or something? Engine getting too hot? I have plenty of green fluid in the bike.. though I seriously doubt it's ever been flushed since 06 (I'm the 3rd owner)..

Silly question oil levels
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks guys, easy enough to do, draining a few and bringing the level up to proper.. All set and ready to roll for Pennsylvania next week.. w00t -
I just a large round of pre-road trip maintenance on the bike tonight, oil and filter, new set of plugs, and recharge the air filters.. I had done the plugs and air filter 12,000 miles ago and they looked spanking brand new, fresh red on the K&N and spark plugs had a nice colour to them (though I will post pics of them later on for your visual interpretation of them..) I goofed when I put the oil in though, seems I added way too much.. almost 4 full litres instead of the usual 3.5 litres when doing the filter as well. Silly question, ought I be better off to drain the excess or will it simply vent out and be no cause for concern except for possible mess on the bike? With the bike upright, warm engine, the oil sits to the top of the glass, when on it's side stand, it's in the middle. Personally, I'd drain but was always curious about this.. Thanks in advance.

Larossa Downturn Pipes.. wow
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A small clip is located at the bottom of this page: http://www.myvstar.ca/waverley/ You'll notice the debris flying when the throttle is blipped.. If I get a happy warm feeling over as to why the engine shut down on the highway and can resolve it, I may put them back on as the sound is nice.. loud but nice.. =) Deep throaty with a serious bark! Cheers -

Hi.. Not sure what the switch by pass is about.. please do explain.. I am 100% certain I hadn't accidentally hit the kills switch like I did before causing an unexpected backfire lol.. I swapped out the pipes and put the Road King pipes back on, road over 200 miles this afternoon and no probs.. Just got to synch up the carbs is all now. My ride buddy wishes I'd put them back on as he loves the sound of them lol.. strangely enough, I got impressive gas mileage when they were on the bike.. so strange! It should have guzzled gas but it was sipping gas.. so weird.. -
Is my muffler shot? If so...now what?
Seaking replied to Semi-retired's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Don't feel bad.. after my 'back fire' episodes the other week the bike started an unfamiliar rattle from one of the pipes.. awww man, I killed a RK muffler by playing around sigh.. Oh well... even got a coupla harley guys to confirm where the sound was coming from.. But it wasn't until I put those LaRossa pipes on that the sound was still there.. the rattle is something 'plastic' coming from behind the passenger seat and luggage box.. I can't find the source but the pipes are fine =) -
Believe it or not, you do NOT want 'lowering' kits installed but instead "leveling" links which in fact will raise the rear of the bike a wee bit, enough to change the rake and trail geometry of the front end resulting in a much better handling bike. I installed them as I found the RSV a heavy sluggish bike, my buddy installed it as his 200 lbs girl friend rides with him a lot and others realized just how nimble the RSV really can be with those leveling links. Don't lower the bike, if anything it will make it worse! Diamond R sells them (ads seen here)

Stebel horn location???
Seaking replied to LtShame's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have mine mounted UNDER the front fairing.. As you face the bike, it's on the right side of the radio box and under where the front speaker is. I used pipe insulator as a cushion around it so that the heavy horn doesn't induce a vibe onto the fairing frame. The foam insulation also acts like a buffer for fitment. Tie wraps hold it down.. Had it installed since last year and it hasn't budged.. You'll know if it does as it will klunk. And yes, its plenty loud even under the fairing.. =) My buddy has his mounted with a homemade bracket and it's solid as well.. The old horn stays there inactive to fill in the void.. -
do you have the URL and P# for those coils? I'm going to be doing the oil, filters and plugs this week to hopefully remedy an issue, but if that fails, I'm willing to part with 30 odd bucks for coils.. can't hurt, good price.. ?

Larossa Downturn Pipes.. wow
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Wow, did a 100 mile run tonight with the Larossas on the bike and wow.. Yes, they are indeed loud but play differently than you would think at different speeds and revs. Not sure if it's just because of the noise but man it feels like there is a lot more giddyap and go to the bike now.. caught myself going through 75 mph in 3rd before I tossed it in 4th.. At highway speeds, 5th gear 75 mph the noise is tolerable.. in 4th gear same speed it's totally different.. I'll be doing sound and video recordings for the record tomorrow. After that, toss on the HD-RK mufflers on before the road trip into the USA.. w00t Addemdum: I went out on a 120 mile run on the bike with buddy today to do sound recordings and halfway through the trip the bike did a 'falter' and died but restarted.. doing 75 mph in 4th on a hot day.. returned home without incident. Not sure what happened, guessing perhaps the engine went into over heat protection?? No idea but it's gone. Back home, removed the Larossas and re-installed the RK Screamin Eagles.. Thems I asked said the bike sounded "bad ass" but not obnoxiously loud.. real deep throaty sound with a good bark! at the twist of the throttle.. Unfortunately waaaaay too loud for me lol. So the experiment ended early. If I could figure out what caused the momentary shut down I'd feel better.. Cheers -
ooooooooooh, ever see two grown men giggling like little school children? A friend had sent me some Larossa downturn slippons to try on my RSV as he didn't need them anymore, these were brand new and they installed easily, replacing the screaming eagles I had on prior. Wow.. these things are loud lol.. but not harsh on the ears (well not harsh to motorcycle enthusiatsts at least) Just the flash up sound, idling and blipping of the throttle brought huge smiles to our faces hehe.. (still chuckling about it..) I will one of the first to say I doubt I'd run with these on for long as I think that under full power they will be very very TOO loud.. And I'm not sure how they would react with the bike without any additional tweaking beyond my abilities.. However, I would ask if the learned and experienced minds here could help me out with some pre ride observations.. When I blip the throttle, there is a burbling noise not normally heard with the other pipes.. THIS would be akin to the sounds people hear making them want to remove the AIS. So I would assume that when I roll down the highway, and decellerate, I'm going to get a lot of blurbling.. Remembering Goose's sage words about not removing one's AIS for troubling purposes, I'll be leaving it on.. However, I'm just curious about the blurbling sounds.. Exhaust temp.. What caught us by surprise is the amount of air being pushed out of the ends and the lack of heat.. no kidding. When you look down the end of the pipe, you can see the glow of daylight through the other end at the downturn.. I would have assumed I'd feel more heat in the exhaust gasses. and the volume of air is less also. To compare, my buddy rolled out his RSV with stock pipes, and you could feel heat in his exhaust almost right away. Strange.. Now the next part I may know the answer anyway but the exhaust gases feel 'wet'.. but in no way what so ever smell like fuel, not even a little.. because these are downturns, they leave a wet spot on the pavement.. It's warm and humid here, so I'm assuming this is all normal.. Tonight, if it's not raining as normal, I'll be taking this out on the highway with my cameras to record the sounds.. if it's not that hard on the ears, I may leave them on for a while but man, I have the funny feeling they won't be there for too long hehe.. what a sound though.. nice!!

There's a fan on these rads? I've never heard mine come on before, even while stuck in stop'n'go traffic.. I wonder if mine is busted? Hmmm

My OD don't luv me no more?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hey SaltyDawg.. I ran the bike up the highway after the course today and rode it in 5th at around 65-75 mph where I could feel the symptoms I described earlier.. ran it there for about 10-15 minutes and then pulled over right away, shut it down and started to feel around the heads and exhaust ports... and man, i burnt my hands a few times.. unfortunately I couldn't feel or find any one jug colder than the others.. =/ I tried it a couple of times and couldn't find anything amiss temp wise. Later, I'll be pulling the plugs.. installing new ones since I'm going through the trouble of removing the tank and such.. What works best, a tighter or looser gap on the plugs? Thanks for the assist.. Cheers M8 -
Plug and play Amp for Venture

Yellow passing lights
Seaking replied to Midnight's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If I am not mistaken, as I haven YET to do this but I believe they are 30w each.. My friend had ambers on his RSV the year before and they worked great in that capacity.. certainly makes you oddly more noticeable =) -

oooh, and what do people say about it? Good upgrade, works great? Much improvement ect? How easy an install etc.. Thanks M8 -
Nice look!! How hard was that to apply? Just pain it on and wipe off the access or is that a magic trick to it? how well will it stay on with the heat ect? That looks awesome!!

Yellow passing lights
Seaking replied to Midnight's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
if I am not mistaken, the lamps on the RSV look similar to the ones on my VStar which I had a pair of WAGNER amber fog spots on it.. rain and fog abundant around here.. and you if you use ambers for that reason, make sure they are 'spots' and not 'floods', otherwise you end up with a wall of yellow in front of you.. the spots will pierce through the fog / rain.. Cheers -

Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks SaltyDawg, next time I'm out on the road and this happens I'll pull over and give it a try to see if I can narrow it down.. I'm teaching all weekend long (MCS) in the rain rain rain.. sigh.. good thing we're passionate about biking!! Are coils difficult to change out? Thanks again! -
My OD don't luv me no more?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Coils.. I read a previous article from Goose about checking coils on a cold start up.. feeling the exhaust ports on a cold start to see if one is colder than the other, indicating a bad coil.. However, as best as I could tell they all work well.. But yeah.. feels like something is not firing properly, the sensation of a weak piston pumping up and down fast... Hmmm.. might be something there.. How else to test for a weak or bad coil? Are coils inexpensive enough to warrant simply changing them all out (tossing out the baby with the bath water kinda thing).. Monday I'll be pulling the tank off to clean up some wiring and will check the plugs.. might be time to install new ones.. Running at 80 mph in 4th doesn't bother me at all but I can't get any range that way Thanks for the heads up lads.. much appreciated -
Awww man.. I got my carbs all synched up nicely.. took special care to do them up right and all.. I was heading out of town to get new E3s installed.. go figure.. a nice shop 2.5 hours away charges less for tires and installation that it's worth the while to go out there and have it done.. however, with our expensive gas, it comes out even after the gas price factor.. However.. Running the bike up to 75 mph in 4th gear everything is SO nice.. smooth, mirrors steady, no buzz, lots of guts.. but when I shift into 5th (OD), it feels all wrong.. I would best describe it as harsh helmet buffeting while driving over a rumble strip.. does that make sense? A heavy thumping sensation that goes away when I shift back into 4th and / or go 85 mph in 5th, though I can feel part of it.. I tested it out by synching the carbs again, shutting it off, starting it up again, blipping the throttle a little and even switching the lines so that the carbs would pump against a different pair of rods (in case one or two were sticking) but all certainly does appear rock solid.. But I can't figure out what's causing that weird feeling in 5th.. it's not lugging, not at those speeds... I started feeling it happening even before I synched up my cards.. but this time I was on a long road trip so I could really feel it.. Rode back mostly in 4th at 75-80 mph which didn't seem to hurt fuel economy too much considering the winds.. but very responsive =) Any thoughs or ideas? BTW, them E3's are sweeeeet!!

Checking the oil level
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've been doing it this way since getting the bike as I don't want the darn thing falling on me and I like knowing that I have the right level of oil for my rides.. I thought I'd share the idea as it seems it hasn't occured to many of this little idea.. I only paid something like 7 bucks for mine.. cheaper the better so in case you lose it..
