  1. Has anyone seen any new info on this bankruptcy? They own J & P cycles, Kuryakyn, Vance & Hines as well as Motorcycle Superstore online store. Anyone have trouble ordering anything on line from these companies? The Motorcycle superstore website says they are merging with the J & P website but this article doesn't mention that just the bankruptcy filing. https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2017/11/16/mag-owner-multiple-motorsports-brands-files-chapter-11-300-mil-debt/ Jim
  2. Happy Birthday, Evan. Hope you enjoyed your day. I wish you many more. Oh, and Anne.........Sheila said you picked a good one! (What does she mean by that?)
  3. You need the mechanic to clarify what "toasty" means. The normal operation of the pump is to click for a few seconds and then shut off, if the bike doesn't start. This is a safety feature of the fuel circuit. The fuel pumps on the 1st Gens are very reliable. Re-read Bongobobs reply above. Jim
  4. Yup, you got the right part. Jim
  5. Here are two Forums with lots of info: http://forums.delphiforums.com/MCTrailertowing http://www.motocampers.com/forums Jim
  6. ST...That stove uses a gas canister and the gas doesn't work well when the temps get below 32 degrees. The gas container loses pressure and the flame may be poor or may not light at all. Best way to preheat canister is to put it in the sleeping bag and keep it warm with your body heat. Look at a MSR Whisperlite stove. Uses liquid fuel, like Coleman fuel, and is not affected by cold. Works great down into the low teens. Also, a one man tent will be very small and usually has no room for a backpack or small suitcase with clothes, etc. Strongly advise you look for a 2 man tent for the extra room. Very little difference in weight if you are concerned about that on a motorcycle. Also many good websites and Forums about motorcycle camping available on the Internet. Jim
  7. $150 for a new tire or one week in the ICU at the hospital, $20,000. I don't need to stay at a Holiday Inn to do the math!!!!! LOL!
  8. I will be in your area on Wednesday and I have a good R/R that you can use to check your electric. I can drop it off as I am headed for Arcade on Wed. Jim
  9. I had the same problem with my 89 VR. I folded up some aluminum foil and it worked well. And it won't mark the chrome. Jim
  10. On Sunday (Fathers Day), I went to the local airport as a member of the local PGR group to welcome home a Group of WWII and Korea veterans. They had spent the weekend in Washington DC seeing the memorials and other sites as part of the Honor Flight program. I have attended may of these Honor Flights in the last few years and I must say it was the highlight of my Fathers Day. I always look forward to attending these homecomings. Many of these veterans never had a welcome home gala and now they are getting what is rightfully theirs. As a Vietnam vet, I came home in civilian clothes and arrived in the middle of the night to avoid any problems or confrontations. Thank you, John, for doing what you are to honor heroes like your father. Jim
  11. I bought a set from McMaster-Carr and they have held up well. They are about 4 years old. They have soft rubber handles for a very firm grip. Number of Pieces Size (Overall Lg.) Material Finish Handle Part No. Price Material Each 3 No. 1 JIS (7 5/16") No. 2 JIS (8 5/16") No. 3 JIS (10 7/8") Steel Chrome Plated Soft Plastic 53325A61 $34.14 Jim
  12. I use the NQ Call Blocker app and it works well. It only allows calls thru that are in your contacts list. It will allow callers whom are not in your contacts list to leave a message or recording so you won't miss messages from say a Doctor's office or your bank that frequently use a private number. It also has a feature to back up your contacts list in case your phone crashes. I have been using it for about 2 years now and am very pleased with it. Jim
  13. I shift both up and down all the time without using the clutch. Only use it for stopping and starting. I have been doing this on the two bikes I have owned for eight years (an 83 & 89). It takes a bit of co-ordination, but as a retired truck driver, I found it was easy to do. To upshift, I accelerate and then when ready to shift, I close the throttle and as the gears relax I toe the lever up to the next gear. Downshifting is a little trickier, because you have to match the RPMs very closely. But again same technique, back off the throttle and when the gears relax, downshift. I may sometimes use the clutch for downshifting into first gear due to my speed and the high RPMs, if a sudden stop is required. If you can shift a 10, 13, or 18 speed without the clutch, you should not have a problem with the bike. I put 40 K miles on my first bike and have almost 50 K on my current bike and have not had any problems with the trans or clutch. I also pull a trailer and shift without the clutch and the bike doesn't seem to operate any different. Of course, I am not an aggressive driver, so all of my shifts are done in an easy manner and no WOT and trying to "speed shift" . Your style may be different but I ride like an "old man", it just takes me five minutes longer to get there than most riders! Jim
  14. Jeff........It's not about maintenance, it's about RUUUM BALLLLLLs , Pond Monsters, and Apple Pie! Jim
  15. S.tyler58: There is a 40 amp ribbon fuse on the left side of the fusebox next to the battery. Check that fuse as it powers everything on the bike. May be corroded or melted. Not sure if there is one on the 83 but one on my 89. Also second fuse box(I think) in front of battery. Look for small black box. Jim
  16. Welcome to the site. Did you overfill the motor with the oil?? The bike has a sight glass on the right side of the motor under the brake pedal. The oil level must be between the lines on the outer ring of the glass. The oil level must be checked with the bike up on the centerstand so it is setting level. Or hold the bike upright and use a mirror to check the level. If you put too much oil in the motor it will get sucked up into the air filter and then into the engine. Open the airbox and check for excess oil laying in the bottom under the filter. The airbox is located under the false cover behind the battery. There is lots of information on this site about overfilling the motor. Just do a search. Also, download the service manual and spend an hour or so and browse thru it. Lots of great reading in there. http://labs.trunkful.com/vrmanuals/firstgenmanual.pdf Also go to "1st Gen tech library - Read Only" area and browse thru it. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Jim
  17. Hey, Puc. That was a funny story. I think every kid did something similar at one time or another. It's a different world now. It was great seeing those old guns. I was a design engineer for Crosman Arms Co. way back in the 70's and 80's and remember all those guns you have pictured there. I personally designed a number of pistols and rifles you have there. I also acquired a collection while working there and had many "special" pistols and rifles built by the modelmakers there. During the years there I had several patents assigned to me for different mechanical inventions. I too, sold my collection many years ago as it became very large and ran out of room to store it. As an employee, I had access to many antique guns and collected all of them. I never did count all of them but my collection was similar in size to yours. All of the guns were restored to factory new condition in my collection. I still have a few special presentation model guns in my current collection, all of which are gold or chrome plated and most of them are engraved and/or have my name on them. They are all packed away under lock and key now, otherwise I would put a few photos up here. When I have a little more time I may get them out and photograph a few special ones for you to look at. Jim
  18. I think I would be concerned about the high angle the front wheel and forks would be setting at if the wheel was 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Seems to me that there would be a lot of stress put on the forks. Are the forks strong enough to absorb the stresses of bouncing the rear of the bike in and out of potholes and over RR tracks, gas station curbs, etc., at that odd angle? Food for thought. I think I would rent or buy a trailer. Jim
  19. Dick: I will be there on Thursday (late in the day, around 5:00 PM) and you can share with me, no problem. I am going to reserve site #100 if it still available. If not, one of the others will be available and I will be on one of them. We usually have two or more tents on a site anyway. Jim
  20. Bob: I would like one. Thanks Jim
  21. I seem to be doing about the same amount of traveling as last year. I am camping this weekend with member Dave Wells in central Ohio and then the following week am planning on going to the Ontario Canada Rally. I am traveling and camping twice in August (WNY Rally being one of them) and then have three camping trips scheduled for September (WV International Rally, is one) and one in October. I camp with members from two other groups as well as VR members. Camping and having a Senior Pass for camping in National Parks allows me to afford to travel at a reasonable cost. Since I am retired and on a fixed income now, I have to budget for these trips. My age is catching up to me because I can't seem to put in as many miles each day, as I used to. A 12 hour riding day seems to take a lot more energy than it used to and the heat this year, while traveling, seems to take it's toll also. But, I will continue as long as I can do it physically. At 70 years old, I'm not sure how much longer I can ride. But, to answer your question, Bob, I still hang around here (the Forum) almost everyday and don't plan on changing that. I seem to spend less time than previous years because of other circumstances. Yard maintenance, pool upkeep and running the household seems to take more of my time. Also, taking care of my wife, whom has had a few more medical problems which requires much more of my time that it used to. I hope to stay active for a few more years. Jim
  22. Thanks Bob. Will be there about 9:30.
  23. Carl and Bongobob: I am planning on attending the MD this year. Carl, I can meet you at the T/A for lunch and Bob, I can meet you at your home and ride to Erie with you. Bob, let me know what time you are leaving. Jim
  24. Woo Hoo!! Already signed up. Looking forward to a weekend of great riding.
  25. You don't need a new cover, just park it in your neighbors, Motorcycle Tom's garage. That is much easier then trying to put a new cover on. Tom won't mind. What are neighbors for??
