Rick and Jeff: I agree with your assessment, as far as it being brittle and breaking somewhere else. Therefore, I am going to try to reassemble and reinforce it first, as I have nothing to lose at this point, and will look for a new fairing half. As I was removing the fairing from the bike, I had a piece break off in my hand and it basically just fell off the fairing, so I know the plastic has gradated to the point where it is very brittle and has little strength. BTW, that was a $1500 paint job and it was a custom color. I wonder what it will cost to paint just one piece? Jim

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I am going to try to glue it back together and reinforce it with a thin aluminum mesh on the back. I found it at Home Depot when I went to get some epoxy. I can mold the aluminum to the shape of the fairing and then put a layer of epoxy over it and see how it works. Here is a photo of the bike when it was finished. This was taken about two weeks ago right after I had it put together. The irony in this whole story is I just gave away a good left fairing to another member on this forum, because I didn't think I would ever need it. I think the problem was caused by the high heat in the garage. It was 101 degrees here and it had to be hotter than that in the closed garage and I would guess that the fluid expanded and caused the seal to leak. Just one of those things that happened, I guess. Since I have removed the bike, it hasn't leaked anymore. Jim

THANK YOU, EARL! It runs like a............
Jayceesfolly replied to Jayceesfolly's topic in Watering Hole
Gary: $1500.00 for all 18 pieces of plastic. I didn't realize how many parts there were until I took them all off. The color is called Pearlessence Purple. It turns from purple to red in the sun, depending on what angle you look at it. It also has metallic red flake in it. Now, read my disaster!! thread up the column a few stories. Jim BTW the head wrench works great, steer head bearings were so loose, I could turn the double nuts with my fingers. The wrench fit perfectly. Thanks. -
In the previous thread I told about the work done on the bike and the new paint job. Well, today I went to the garage to get the bike to add running lights and a Strebel horn I had purchased and when I got the bike out, I discovered the clutch fluid had leaked out of the cylinder at the handle and dripped on the fairing!!! My beautiful paint job is ruined and the fairing has split into 6 pieces. I am heart broken. I removed the fairing and washed all the pieces in soapy water and am going to have to try to save the fairing. Question: What can I do to glue it back together and what else can I do to fix the degradation in the plastic. Jim

......... fine Swiss watch! Short version of a long story. Last fall I bought a 89 VR and took it to Earl and told him to do whatever it needed to make it run like new. Well, he kept the bike over the winter and spent many, many hours going thru the bike from top to bottom and front to back. He did everything but remove the engine from the frame. He sent me a two page list of all the things he did to the bike. In April, I picked up the bike and decided to have it painted because I had to replace the front fairings, as they were damaged on the left side. The bike was blue and the fairings were black (thank you to Doug Nordin for the fairings). So, off to the paint shop for three weeks. Well, now I have it done and took a ride on it to Bongobob's 4th of July BBQ. I have to thank Earl for all the hours he put in over the winter, working on the bike. The bike runs so smooth, I can't believe it has the same motor in it. Thank you, Earl. You have no idea how happy I am with your work. I am now going to have it pin stripped and then will be finished with it. Also, a big thank you to Rick Butler. Your seat mod is so comfortable, I can now ride for hours. Everyone should have your seat mod done. Below is a pic of the bike after it was painted. PS....to Earl: I already have a list of things to do to the bike next winter! Clutch mod and SS lines to start.

Impressed with the 100 LED rear light.
Jayceesfolly replied to Phoneman1981's topic in Watering Hole
Doug: You can take your CMU out of the dash and solder a jumper wire across the sensor on the circuit board. I bought two LED's for the taillight on my 89 VR and they are much brighter. And no annoying icon on the dash. There is a thread on here on how to jumper the sensors. I also soldered my tail light sensor as well as the brake light sensor while I had the circuit board apart. Tail light is from Custom Dynamics. I think this is the one. http://www.customdynamics.com/Yamaha_tail_retro.htm Jim -
BongoBob forgot to tell you that he would also have a beer in one hand and a mouse in the other................also, his belly hanging out the bottom of his t-shirt and he hasn't had a shower in three days. OooooH, what a pic!! Come to think of it, I can see some of myself there also! Sorry, Bob.......All I could see was you slouched in front of your laptop with a cold beer and one sock on and the other one lost in the bedroom somewhere. Jim

James: If you or your daughter wants to touch the bag up, the aluminum strips come off. There are very tiny screws that hold them in place. Check the inside of the strips. At least the strips on my 89 VR came off. Not sure about the 84 though. Jim

LEFT Speaker Grill for a '91 VR
Jayceesfolly replied to OldGazer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Cliff: I have pair of blank ones (no speaker in it) that I can send you. It is from an 89 VR. Not sure if it will fit as I am not sure what years are compatible. If you can check, I will send both the left and right one to you for free. (If one is bad, might as well change both) It should fit in a small USPS Priority box. I can send it on Thursday. PM me your address if it will fit your bike. Jim -
Every time I go to Craigslist, my wife whacks me in the back of the head and then she makes me turn the 'puter off. She said two bikes are enough and I can only ride one at a time anyway. What does she know? Bikes are like potato chips, you can't have only one or two! (Boy, I hope she doesn't read this. I will get skillet rash for that comment).

I would e-mail you a gallon of ice cream but, I am in Dayton, OH this week and I think it would melt by the time it got to you. So, I did the next best thing and ate it for you! I feel much better now! Ice cream works!!!!!!!! Get well soon, Tom. Jim

If I can't see my new invisible bike............how do I know I got the color I ordered?
-
Hi: As Bongo Bob said, I live in Irondequoit and I have a left fairing I will give you for free. I have other panel parts that might be repairable also. The fairing is red and will not match your color scheme, but it is in very good shape. I will PM you my phone numbers so you can call me. I will be available all day tomorrow (Sunday) if you want to pick it up and look at the other panels I have. Jim

We will have the cruise , rain or shine. If it rains, everyone can cage it. We have two screen houses to keep every one dry for the dinner. Jim

Save the date.........August 6th 2011.......for a cruise on Lake Ontario and the Genesee River. Sheila & I are hosting a M & E in August. I wanted to buy a party barge, but my wife said something about finding me floating in Lake Ontario, ............face down! So, I decided to do the next best thing and let someone else do the driving and we can enjoy the scenery. After the cruise we will return to our home for a picnic style dinner and a custom ice cream sundae bar. Yes, Big Tom....there is something for everyone! Build your own banana split!!! :fnd_(16): We have room in our yard for a few tents if you would like to spend the night, and a hot tub and a beach for a swim in the lake. See the details in the Meets & Eats Forum. We hope to see you there!! Jim & Sheila

Is this right?
Jayceesfolly replied to Hfab5's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hfab5: I live in Rochester (Irondequoit) and would be glad to look at your bike for you and see if we can work thru this problem. I will be out of town until Friday morning. I have a '83 and '89 VR that you can ride as a comparison. PM me. Jim -
I understand the urge to ride, we finally have nice weather here in western NY, and it is time to ride. I just decided last week to semi-retire. I am only going to work two days a week. I have two bikes and both are down. The 83 VR has a bad CMU in it, and the 89 VR (that Earl resurrected) is taken apart to be painted. It is going to be Lavender Pearlessence with pinstripping. So, now I will have plenty of time to get both back together and ride them this summer. Jim

Need part numbers for 89 VR
Jayceesfolly replied to Jayceesfolly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Rocket: Thanks for the part numbers. I will buy a piece of steel and make a couple of brackets as you suggested. Jim
