Why do you multiple 1st Gen MKIs or MKIIs
Jayceesfolly replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
I own more than one because the law says I can only have one wife!.....and everyone needs to collect something! Seriously, I bought the 83 on a whim, riding by one day on my GW and bought it from a guy's front yard. I liked the performance and ride and decided to buy a newer one. Found the 89 on this Forum and decided to do a complete overhaul on it. Will finish it this winter and then will probably keep it for a few years, as I am getting ready to retire. Probably will trike it when I can't swing my leg over the seat anymore. I am going to sell the 83 Blonde shortly because I can't ride more than one at a time. Jim- 14 replies

Left side oil leak
Jayceesfolly replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had an oil leak on my 83 VR and it turned out to be a warped cover. Pull the cover and lay it on a flat surface or use a flat steel piece to check and make sure the cover is flat. I replaced the cover and it corrected the problem. -
My 83 Blonde has 65K on the frame and 35K on the motor(86). (It's going up for sale). My 89 has 35K Never enough time to add more miles.

Handle bar nut covers
Jayceesfolly replied to BuckShot's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check with Skydoc_17, he had some yellow covers on his bar ends on his scoot. He may be able to tell you where he got them, and if other colors are available. Jim -
Brenda: I put the microwave and TV in myself. I have never used the TV, so took it out after 6 months. and use the microwave to warm meals when on the road. I just work part time now - 2 days a week, so I don't spend much time in the truck anymore. I prefer a Volvo because they are quieter than most other trucks and , I think, ride better. The company switched to Intl (Prostars) and the drivers didn't like them, so they switched back to Volvo. The IH were shorter wheelbase and the sleepers were smaller and less HP. The company had two brand new 2011 IH's that sat for three months in the parking lot, because no one wanted to drive them. Because of anti idling laws, the company is fitting all the trucks with APUs or all electric units. My truck has all electric units for heat and A/C and electricity. It allows me to sleep without the truck running and is very quiet. The system is recharged while you drive, from the main alternator on the truck.

I think it should be an inground pool. All you have to do is dig a little deeper(don't forget the deep end). It might be a "first" on this Forum. The first member to have an inground pool in their living room.

I don't use the clutch at all when upshifting or downshifting on my 89 VR. I just use the throttle to "relax" the gears and then shift. My upshifts are smooth but sometimes the downshifting is a little uncomfortable because I don't always match the RPMs exactly, but I ride 99% of the time alone, so it's not a problem for me. I only use the clutch to stop and start the bike. I also owned two Hondas and shifted them the same way (no clutch) and feel they shift a little smoother than the VR, but they had 60K + miles on them, so I don't know if they can be compared with the 89 VR because it only has 34K miles. Bob: Happy belated Birthday! I was working and out of town and didn't have a wi-fi hookup. I have a bottle of wine which we will share at the WNY Rally and swap lies. Happy Birthday and I wish many more for the nicest person on this Forum.......... Jim

I own two VR's and I love them. They take some work because of their age, but worth every penny. I have no qualms about hopping on my bike and going cross country. But, the best thing about this forum is the people here. They are the best!!! I couldn't ask for more help or parts or encouragement from the great people on this Forum. Everyone here has been so helpful to me with all my problems. I can't say enough good things about the people on this forum. As everyone here says: It's the best $12 you will ever spend".!! Jim

I need a head count by Thursday for the cruise on Saturday. I need to provide the cruise company the number of seats to reserve. Please sign up by Thursday morning, if you are coming to the M & E, so that I can order the food for the meal after the cruise. I hope to see all of you there! Thanks Jim

The company I work for leases all their trucks and our trucks are never more than two years old. Because we change trucks every two years, we have very few mechanical problems. I have only broken down twice in four years. Once for a flat tire and once for a bad alternator. I only work two or three days a week, so I only put about 90 K miles on a year. If we have a mechanical problem we just make a phone call to the leasing company or push a emergency button on the dash and they send the repair people out to us and fix the problem. For security reasons, we have three computer systems, in the truck, that tracks us by satellite and keeps the company up to date on our location and monitors the operation of the truck. We drive "plain jane" Volvos. Model 780's that are painted plain white for security reasons. They look like every other Volvo on the road. But they are outfitted with all the comfort things for living on the road, APU's, refrig, microwave, TV, DVD player, ipod hookups, and Internet w/e-mail. A home away from home. Jim

Dan: I have a slightly used Volvo that you could use. It is only 6 weeks old and less than 20,000 miles. It might need to have the paint touched up though. Actually, mine is in a little better shape than this one. Jim PS: The driver walked away with minor injuries.

There has been a change of venue for our M & E on Aug 6th (the Upstate NY Cruise & Cream). The Harbor Towne Belle cruise has been changed to a cruise on the Sam Patch packetboat on the Erie Canal(website: www.samandmary.org). We did not meet the minimum number of passengers for a trip on the Harbor Towne Belle. The cruise on the Sam Patch will start at 2:00 PM from the dockage at Schoen Place in Pittsford, NY. I have reserved 20 seats for this cruise and can change the total up to Tuesday the 2nd of Aug. We will leave my home at 1:00 PM for the ride to Pittsford. (Approx. 20/25 minute ride.) PLEASE NOTE THE NEW TIME FOR DEPARTURE FROM MY HOME. We will also have a complimentary shuttle service for everyone that is staying overnite, on Saturday night, at the two hotels listed in the original M & E notice (Holiday Inn Express & Hampton Inn). We will be offering adult beverages at the dinner after the cruise, and this will allow you to leave your bike at our home and be escorted to your hotel in the evening. You will also be picked up in the morning and returned to our home to retrieve your scoot. We will serve coffee and donuts, bagels, etc for a morning snack when you retrieve your scoot. Please let me know if you are staying overnight. If you arrive early on Saturday, we will be serving a light snack of “finger foods” before we leave from my home on Saturday. Please update your name on the calendar, if you want to delete your name or, if you have not previously signed up, and wish to participate, please do so ASAP. I will need a final count for the cruise by Aug 2nd. Thanks Jim

I bought the fake Stebel horn from Harbor Freight and mounted it on the original bracket for the stock horn on the right side. I used the original wiring and horn button to activate the relay to fire the horn. The relay is wired direct to the battery thru a fuse. The pic is not vey good because I took it with my old camera phone. It sure gets peoples attention! Jim

Went for a 170 mile ride yesterday and the epoxy and reinforcement pieces held up well. No additional cracks appeared. I am going to leave the fairing on and ride it this way until I can get the replacement fairing painted. Thanks to everyone, for their suggestions and ideas. Jim
-
I spent all day yesterday and today reinforcing the fairing with pieces of ABS. I used a 5 minute epoxy and it seems to have worked well. I just finished assembling the bike and everything is still holding together. Of course, it took about 7 lbs of epoxy, but it seems to be working. I could not get the MEK to dissolve the ABS I was using so I decided to go with epoxy glue instead. See pics below. I contacted the paint shop and they have plenty of paint left, so I am going to have them paint another fairing. I am going on a 175 mile ride tomorrow, so I will see if the epoxy fix will hold up. No slow crank when hot!!! WHY?
Jayceesfolly replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Steve: My 89 Vr and 83 VR both had the hot start problem. Put a Odyssey AGM in the 83 Blonde and a AGM from Earl in the 89 VR and it cured the problem for both bikes. Jim Since your wife likes the new bike, does that mean you are bringing her to my M & E in two weeks? -
Well, I have glued the pieces together with epoxy glue (for ABS) and have started a jar of MEK and ABS pieces and will try to use that to reinforce the pieces. Fortunately, the pieces that broke are in an area that has a lot of clearance behind the wall of the fairing, and I can add as much reinforcement material as I want. I am going to add some ABS material and glue it in with the MEK and ABS mixture. Also, the broken pieces do not exhibit the spongy looking edges which indicate that the brake fluid has gone deep into the material. The edges show nice shinny material, so I am hoping to save this fairing. I will know in a day or two. I will take some pics tomorrow and post. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. After the panic has gone, I am more optimistic that I can save this faring, but time will tell. And the person that I gave the left fairing to has called me and offered it back to me as he has found another fairing. Thank you, Ray Stacy. I will still have to have it repainted, so I may use the fairing that Ray has offered back to me. I will make a decision next week after I see how strong this one will be, after the repairs. Jim
