Close Call.......Them pesky giant rats with antlers....
Jayceesfolly replied to MonsterBiker's topic in Watering Hole
We had a rider die in a collision with a deer yesterday. https://www.whec.com/wayne-county-ny-news/newark-man-on-motorcycle-dies-after-striking-deer-/5875914/?cat=565 Jim -

1st Gen Auxiliary gas can.
Jayceesfolly replied to Pasta Burner's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have one of these and it fits in the side bag of my 89 VR. Never a gas smell and it sits in the bag in the sun all day long. I only carry it on trips and do not use it for around town travel. I have never had to use it for myself, but I have used it for other riders. It's pricey, but very heavy plastic and worth the cost. Jim -
Erratic Voltage
Jayceesfolly replied to jdross440's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm with WIZ, I installed a Shindegen FH20AA R/R and it charges at 14.2 volts (even at idle) and never had a problem. It's a great unit. I soldered the three wires to the the harness and then wired the R/R direct to the battery and not thru the wire harness to the bike. No waste of power thru the long complicated wire harness on 30 year old wiring. Jim -
I had a great time and Ernie and Dave were very accommodating. And the food was AWESOME! This campground has all types of accommodations to match anyone's taste from campsites to hotel and cabins. Along with beautiful views of Lake Ontario, while watching the sun go down, and sitting around the nightly campfire, swapping lies while unwinding from the days activities. It was a great weekend and I am looking forward to going back next year. PS: I agree with Big Tom, the steak dinner was awesome and as a matter of fact all the meals were fantastic. Now, I have to exercise more to lose the 10 lbs. I gained from eating the food that was served.

The three-day average of total hospitalizations had increased in Western New York on Wednesday. Deaths had declined for four consecutive days, well under the required 14. Your reading assignment for today is to read all of this and then you will be fully informed on whether or not you can camp in NY. Your welcome!!! Jim

Here is one article, Ben, dated yesterday. https://time.com/5836559/canada-u-s-border-closure-extension-coronavirus/

Ben: I saw a note on the local news yesterday that the US and Canada may extend the cross border block for another month. I will try to find the article and paste it here. Jim

John: New York is using a four phase system to re-open the State. Phase 1 is starting May 15th and openings will generally follow the areas of the state by region. The Shores Campground is in the Western NY region and each region will need to hit certain goals to allow businesses to open, by phases. Campgrounds are in Phase 4 and none of the regions meet the criteria to open at Phase 4 level. About 2/3 of the regions meet the Phase 1 level and will open certain businesses on May 15th. Unfortunately, Niagara County (where the campground is located) has not met the criteria for Phase 1. So, basically, there are no answers for a timeline for re-opening Niagara County. The chamber of Commerce in Niagara County may be able to give better answers than I have given here. It may be useful to e-mail them as to their plans to open their private campgrounds this summer. Ben: I have been retired for 10 years now and the answer to your question is.......get on your bike with your camping gear and say "SEE YA" to the wife and disappear for a few days. As the Puckster says, CTFW. That's what I do. I have found that "The Boss" appreciates me more when I return. I have finally (after 10 years) found that she now asks for me to do projects around the house instead of just handing me a "honey do list" and says JUST DO IT !!! Jim PS.....You can tell her you have lost the honey do list, right after you throw it in the trash.

Did you bleed the front brake? It is linked with the rear brake and the usual cause of the pedal not returning is air in the system. The front brake line has a banjo near the front fork neck that can be cracked to remove the air from the front line. It usually takes more than one time to bleed the brakes. There is a write up in the tech section about the bleeding of the brakes, I think. If not do a search on the forum.

Ken: You only have one brake on the front wheel working. The left one is controlled by the rear brake pedal as it is linked to the rear brake. I wouldn't ride with only one brake rotor working. But that's your decision. As far as breaking the reservoir.....been there, done that. The reservoir is made out of a very soft pot metal and due to age is seems to lose it's structural strength. So when you put a wrench on the fill nut and twist, the whole fill neck snaps off. Check on e-bay for a used one. After you replace it, use TWO wrenches to open the reservoir. Place one wrench just below the fill nut, on the neck area of the reservoir, and apply a counter force on the body of the reservoir and then twist off the fill nut. In effect you are counterbalancing the torque being put on the body of the reservoir and will prevent the reservoir from breaking. This works for me. Hope this helps. Jim

coolant blowout
Jayceesfolly replied to Venture Capitalist's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Also, get a new o-ring for t-stat cover. They are usually old and brittle. You can take it to Lowe's or Home Depot and match it. Much cheaper than ordering thru Mama Yama. Jim -
coolant blowout
Jayceesfolly replied to Venture Capitalist's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do a search on this forum for thermostat cross reference and buy a t-stat from NAPA or whatever auto parts store you use. I replaced my t-stat and used an auto unit and it only cost me a few bucks. Been working fine for three years. Checked my old notes and came up with: NAPA #156 and Stant #13758 . Jim -
Well, I looked up the ingredients for DQ ice cream and found the following: TECHNICALLY, WHEN YOU ORDER A CONE OR CUP AT DAIRY QUEEN, YOU'RE NOT GETTING ICE CREAM. According to the company, "Our soft-serve does not qualify to be called ice cream. To be categorized as ice cream, the minimum butterfat content must be 10 percent, and our soft-serve has only 5 percent butterfat." What are the ingredients in Dairy Queen ice cream? INGREDIENTS: Artificially Flavored Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream: Milkfat And Nonfat Milk, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Whey, Mono And Diglycerides, Artificial Flavor, Guar Gum, Polysorbate 80, Carrageenan, Vitamin A Palmitate.

Ron: The Surgeon said he was erring on the side of safety plus they are separating both shoulder joints (on the right side) to remove arthritis. I also am taking Tylenol on almost a daily basis, especially on days that I do physical labor (yard work, etc.), plus I need to take them to sleep at night. I have a total tear and the arthritis just complicates the problem. I understand your comment about the physical demands of your job because I was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years before retiring. I began in 1964 and retired in 1997. I still miss it. Jim

Ron: My shoulder operation scheduled for last week was canceled because I came down with bronchitis. It has not been re-scheduled and if it is re-scheduled, it may be into March, according to one of the surgeons' secretaries. That is not going to work as far as I am concerned. The rehab for that may interfere with my camping and riding this coming summer. The surgeon said it may take 4 to 5 months for rehab. He is worried about handling a 800 lb. bike. He is a bike rider also (Harley) so he is familiar with picking up a fallen bike, etc.. So, I have a meeting set up for the end of the month to discuss options or putting off the surgery until next Fall. I will know more by the end of the month. Jim

Thanks Ron, for the info. I have two recliners that will fit the bill nicely and are situated right in front of the TV in our family room. Now, if I can get my wife to deliver the beer to me, I won't have to leave the chair at all!! (wishful thinking, methinks!) Anyway, after another meeting with the surgeon today, I was told they are going to work on my clavicle joint (lateral end) also. It seems arthritis is rearing it's ugly head. After hearing your experience, I am beginning to feel that rehab will be shorter than the Dr's are telling me. And that is good. One way or another I will be riding next summer. Thanks for telling me about your experience. Jim And, Ben, sorry for hijacking your thread.

Ben: I feel your pain. I did the same thing a year ago, but it wasn't as bad as your injury. I just limped around on a pair of crutches and a cane for a month. I currently am getting ready for extensive surgery, in two weeks, on my right shoulder due to damage of the shoulder joint and torn rotator cuff. It cut my riding season short this summer. I am hoping to be back on the bike by June 1st, but no guarantees, according to the surgeon. On top of that, I have developed some heart problems that will also require a heart operation in the Spring, once my shoulder has healed enough to be useful again. I hope you heal fast and are back to dancing the night away! Jim
