06 Venture with a BANG! and a shriek...
GlennTuc replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Owned a 1966 Corvair. White with a 4 speed. Great car. Sold it to a guy I flew with when I got orders to Oklahoma. Is there a correlation to Corvair owners and RSV owners? Glenn -
By the way. That's a very sharp RSV. Hope you don't mind if I use some of your ideas. Great looking bike. Glenn T.

Hey Ruffy, What's those little jugs you have on top of your tail lights on picture #3? Glenn

I was working overtime at the plant and was relieved by my co-worker at 0200. I changed clothes and headed for the house. It was a cloudy night, so the only light on I-24 to help me see was the headlight and passing lights on my RSV. As I was zipping down the hiway at a smooth 75 mph, I caught a glimpse of something to my left and on the edge of the road. When I passed it, I seen that it was a bale of hay. Before I could completely refocus my eyes back to the front and say "I'm glad that wasn't in the middle of the road," well, you guessed it, there was another in the middle of the road. I swerved to miss it and caught it with my lower right fairing. It broke my fairing and bent the engine guard into my floorboard and pushed my floorboard up. As I swerved and sideswiped the bale in the road, I seen two more bales in the road and there was just enough room to swerve again and go in between them. Needless to say I had come to a near stop by then. The motor still sounded good and it still handled fine, so I rode it on home without any more problems. I see a deer or two occasionally, but I never would have thought there would be bales of hay on the Interstate Highway. Some people, like myself, are fortunate to be able to ride year round. For others, riding season is just beginning. Whenever, however, and whatever you ride, please stay aware that unexpected hazards are out there. RIDE SAFE!!!! Glenn

Considering buying a Venture, but have concerns
GlennTuc replied to MPK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had a GL1100 Interstate in the early 80's and really liked the bike. The new GWs don't look like a motorcycle to me, so I didn't even look at them. I was considering a HD Ultra Classic until I walked across the road to the Yama dealer and caught a glimpse of the 08 RSV I bought (what a price difference). I don't hear any bothersome noises, even when my radio was having problems (that PO'd me), but even with that, I love my RSV. I bought it in May and ride it every possible day I can. The only things that keep me off it is snow, ice and my wife. So far I have over 9600 miles on it. Buy what you are comfortable with, but I do enjoy that RSV. I would probably think twice about buying from a dealer who wouldn't let me test drive one (If you have a valid motorcycle license). The dealer I bought mine from has offered to loan me a bike to ride into town while mine was getting serviced. Good Luck on your search. May rock and tar never remove the shine from your scoot or hide from your body. Glenn- 36 replies

Just changed out the plugs in my 08 RSV with 9000 miles on them. The owner's manual says to change them at 8000 miles, but when I pulled the plugs out, they looked fine. I changed them anyway but was wondering why we are supposed to change them at 8000 miles? Electronic ignition and unleaded premium gas will get you about a 100,000 miles on on some car engines. Anyone have any ideas why we are supposed to change them at 8000 miles? Thanks, Glenn

I do occasionally. Glenn

:thumbsup2:I've got a little over 7500 miles on my 08 RSV and the rear tire is showing it. How do I judge when I need to replace the tire? It still has tread on it, but I didn't notice any wear indicators. I would like to think I can get more than 7500 miles on a tire before replacing it. Anyway, once again I call upon the vast knowledge of fellow Venturers.

Looks like we're "Venturing" to the "dark side"...

Give Janeo a shout on this website. He's looking for a 1st Gen. He might be delighted to get a chance at yours. Congrats on the 2nd Gen. You'll probably find it a little smoother and faster than the 1st Gen.:stirthepot: Glenn -
I've been to Kev so I know what you mean. Don't rember what the temp was, but there was a whole lot of white cold stuff on the ground. Can you put snowmobile tracks on the rear of your RSTD and a Ski on the front? Year round riding then. Glenn

Thanks everyone for their advice. I'll end getting something electrical I guess, but I don't plan on putting the bike away because of cold temps. Snow, freezing rain - of course - but we get very little of that. My friends goldwing has heated hand grips and seat (factory). Maybe someday Yamaha will do the same? Thanks again, Glenn

I went up to Omaha to visit my son at Offutt AFB, and really liked it there. Course, I've never traveled across the state, but I thought Omaha was a great place to visit. Glenn

Got a question for you cold weather riders who have been doing this for a while. What gloves do ya wear to keep your hands warm. I've rode home from work the last couple of mornings, temps around 30 to 32 degrees F, and with my snowmobile suit on my body stays comfortable, but my hands get extremely cold. I wear waterproof snowmobile gloves but it doesn't help. I'm not even going to try adding a handwarmer on the grips, beings what adding fuel is the extent of my mechanical abilities. Any help on warm gloves would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn

It was at the dealer to troubleshoot and repair the radio/comm system. They changed everything on the radio/comm system and couldn't fix the problem. They finally changed out the main wiring harness and it works fine. They were back and forth with Mother Yamaha the whole 4 weeks because I had taken it back to them 3 other times. Even had a factory rep out to look at it. It hadn't worked since the first week I've had it. Now it finally works. Now I think the shock is leaking oil. I'm not going to be able to get back to the dealer until the middle of October, and I'm going to ride it to work everyday until then. Glenn

Just got my bike back after its been in the shop for 4 weeks and two days. I rode it to work and back for the past two days, approximately 120 miles. I parked it in the driveway when I got home and my wife and I took a walk around the yard. When we got back to the driveway, I was walking up to the bike to put it in the garage, and I noticed an oil spot under the bike. I looked under the bike and noticed oil leaking from the bottom of the shock. Now, I had the bike serviced while the dealer had it and was just hoping it could be something venting that caused the oil leak. I've read bad stories about shocks going bad and leaking oil. I hope thats not the case. If it is I'm going ballistic on Yamaha. I have just about had it with this bike. If it is the shock, can I ride it till I get the time to take it to the dealer and get it replaced? Anyway, any advice if it is a shock, and what should I do with this bike. It has less than 5000 miles on it and I'm just about ready to get rid of it. Thanks, Glenn

I have a question to ask our members and guest. My 08 RSV has been in the shop now for 3 weeks with a radio problem (will not work, cuts in and out). The dealer has changed out the left rear speaker, entire radio unit, handlebar control head, wiring sub-harness and CB mich button and still cannot find the problem. I thought they were going to change out the entire harness earlier but they didn't, but now have decided to do so. Now, I've been without my bike now for 3 weeks and it looks like I may be without it for another 2 weeks at least. I'm getting tired of waiting on it. The people I work with have told me to demand a loaner bike or yet, give me another one. I'm a fairly patient person and have dealt with this dealer before and like them. But my question to you fellow members who have dealt with bike dealers before is: How long should I wait before I start squawking and raising cane about getting my bike back? I got about a months riding out of it before the radio and CB broke. My bike was my primary transportation to and from work. Needless to say I'm getting a little frustrated and so is the shop trying to fix it. They also have another 08 RSV in the shop with the same problem. When they figure out what's wrong with mine, they can fix the other one too. Any advice from you all will be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn
