  1. Not trying to hijack this thread...but what about a US citizen travelling in Canada or vice versa? Are they not eligible for yamaha warrenty when travelling? I sure hope so.
  2. Please let me know how the oil change affects the chirp. I will need an oil change real soon and I would like to know if I should change oil weights.
  3. I have installed the RK mufflers, but they aren't quite loud enough to drown out the 'chirp' They are gonna have to do for this year as the bank account is starting to complain and I have a couple of trips to make yet. Thanks for the replies guys.
  4. Well, I finally got to admit my new to me 2005 RSV has it. I test rode it, heard it at lower speeds but not at highway cruising speeds so I purchased it. I must say here I used a full face helmet for the test ride, and the subsequent 4 hour ride home after with no headset listen to music or CB. I did notice it on the way home, but had a tail wind almost all the way. The other day it was quite hot, and I used my other 3/4 helmet for a 2 hour ride (no headset). The wind picked up quartering from my left front. I couldn't wait to get off that bike! What an irritating chirp at about 110 km (65mph). But what I did find was that by shifting body position, turning my head, or leaning my body to one side I could change the intensity of the chirp dramatically. I know if I was blessed with longer arms, I could lean well back and get away from it all together. So it seems to me a combination of motor load, wind speed direction etc etc. Has anyone else experienced this? This is NOT about a whine, but a chirp sound. It seems to be worst when both ears get it simultaneously. I don't know what to do about it. It is tolerable with full face and tunes, and I wore the 3/4 size helmet (no headsets) with foam ear plugs recently and it was OK also. I could hear it, but it was quite soft. I am not sure what to do about it. My local Yamaha dealer has not had much experience with either the RSTD or RSV, and I am not sure complaining would not fall on deaf ears. Has anyone had luck changing oil types or weight ie 10w30 or 20w50, dino vs synthetic etc? Thanks.
  5. Thanks for the tips George. I had previously lubricated the twist grip. I don't know what I did, but I got it to work again. I did try and get some lube down the cables from the twist grip, but I fiddled with the slack adjustment screw by the twist grip. All of a sudden, I must have hit the sweet spot because it became slick as all get out, and returned to zero throttle everytime. I quickly tightened the set nut before I got it out of wack again. Will probably address this again in the future. What do you think of squirting lube in the small hole in the throttle joint? Will that help or not?
  6. How or where do you lube the throttle cables on a 2nd gen? Mine seem to be binding and if I turn the handlebars completely to the right, the throttle will stay where ever it was left at. There is some sort of junction, plastic oval shaped device on left side under gas tank. This has a hole in it. Should I squirt 'Fluid Film' or 'WD-40' in there or take it apart? It seems awkward to take apart as the screws are on the back side towards the frame. Please help as I am hopelessly lost here and I was hoping to go for a ride in the morning. Thanks.
  7. Of course you gonna know what happened today, right? You guessed it. Came out in the garage, held my nose differently and turned the key. Things started flashing, so I tapped the unit and wiggled wires (as if I didn't do this a jillion times on the 8 hour ride yesterday) and away it went. So, unless i can get it to do it again, there is no use taking it to the Yamaha dealer. Thanks for the response Sarge46.
  8. Wired in some extra horns under the fairing, and added 2 switches for heated vests and a carb heater cut-off switch last night. This morning, I had problems. The cassette would play and i could change volume, but only through the speakers. None of the other settings on the unit were effective. Ejected cassette, had blank screen, and every now & then "CASS" would flash on screen. I never did cure itself all day. I will check if I messed up some connections under fairing, and also check fuse under right lower cowling but other than that I have no ideas. I'm thinking it is dealer time and check out warrenty unless someone has experience this particular problem before?
  9. I am not electrically gifted...so I would like a bit of clarification if possible. As I understand this relay modification function; it is to protect the main ignition switch from future failure? Using a relay for passing lamgs, and this relay, will shunt most of power away from the switch and thereby saving the switch from failure? This is then NOT a by-pass that would allow one to start a RSV with a failed switch. The switch should not fail if most of the power is done through the relay. Right? Anybody had a switch fail after this mod? Thanks.
  10. Thanks Hazel and Pete. I had a great time too! But they didn't post the pictures of the Silver colored RSV leading the pack...proof positive they are the fastest.
  11. Many years ago when everyone in the US was buying these jacks, there didn't seem to be any in Canada available. I ended up buying a set of plans from someone on the internet and building my own. I still have it and it works fine. Lifts the RSV with no trouble. I did make slight changes to it so it lifts just on the frame.
  12. Spaceman, Have you other RSV's you can look at or compare measurements in S'toon? I am in Speedy Creek, and will be coming up there soon...you sure can look at mine and take measurements etc. I don't think my is off, but then I can't walk straight either
  13. I managed to find a connector located behind the right lower cowling that had not been connected properly. PO had fallen against a cement curb at a gas station. Naturally, I found broken tabs as well. Included a picture, taken from the front for those who have never in there. The radiator is just visible on right side of pic. There is a fuse for 'audio', loacted in a white fuse holder. There are also 4 fuses in the black fuse holder; 1 x10 amp for CC (crusie control), 1x 10 amp for carb heaters, and 2 are for the external power sources in dash and under seat.
  14. I have tried this at numerous speeds varying between 80 and 120 kph or (50 to 73 mph) in 4th and 5th gears.
  15. OK folks...a new bike and a new set of problems. I have 2005 RSV and when I turn on 'Cruise' control switch all lights go on at first, then 'set' and 'rev' go out like it is supposed to. When I try to set the speed then both the 'set' and 'rev' come on and blink 5 times together. About 30 sec later, they repeat and this will continue all day. Pushing 'set' or 'rev' or 'cancel' does nothing. I have checked main fuses under left cover below seat, clutch switch, and both brake switches. I have taken apart the handle bar cruise switches and sprayed with contact cleaner, as well as WD-40 so that switch rocks correctly. Any ideas before I start to tear this thing apart? PO says it worked fine last time used. I intend to take outer fairing off, as well as both lowers, and check/clean all connections and use dielectric grease, and check vacuumn lines, and also more fuses under right lower cowling (is this correct?) Any and all ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    First ride

Bigbob, I got to try out my new scoot today too! Just got in from Lethbridge...what a ride. Two problems so far. Cruise control didn't work and my headset just squealed when I plugged it in. Not sure what is going on there as the headset used to work in the old Venture. Brian....Count me in for May 16 too. Again, when and where? Also, have you contacted Tessas's wife to tell her a bunch may show up unannounced? Be a pity to show up and nobody home?
  20. Well, as far as I know it is a done deal. As of closing time today it hadn't sold; and since I will be there bright and early monday morning, I will be riding it home. Subject of course to a test ride! Wow, I am amazed i got that out of them. Will post some pics monday evening.....maybe.

  22. anyone know why I can't download these items from the tech library? It can't seem to find the files so I am wondering if this is a temporary thing or if I am out of luck. thanks
  23. Not sure why a nearly bald man would want to use hair spray.....but each to his own!
  24. When i had my 96 royal star classic, i did something called the 'Bigfoot' mod. Basically opened up the air box to let more air in and changed some jets. Seemed to give it more power. All in all, it was the best bike and the most comortable bike I have ever owned...just needed a bit more power. Perhaps the Dyna 3000 (is that the right number?) could be done which allowed higher revs in each gear. Probably a vmax rear end would really be the answer! Notice I have lots of ideas?
