in CO on the eastern face. ... We get to ride about 70% of our days here. Put in 65 miles 'on the face' here Monday in the mid 50's. And I think cold riding is MUCH safer as we are all so well bundled in our full dress. Texas? Love that state as a grad of NTSU in Denton! Wish I could have lived there! JackZ

Never did ride IN Illinois, but only through it on the way from OH to CO where my kids lived, and where we all live now! And Squid: (!!!) I put in 65 miles Monday, and of course snow last night an 16 now; but that's temp until I yell at the mts and the clouds roll back to let that CO sunshine in! And yes, the scenes of harvest in Ill are great. I've seen many of them in my younger years serving country churches. IN FACT, I once watched that through the 200 year old double doors facing east as I preached in a little church N of Jacksonville, Ill, called teh Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Later I became an administrator in retirement homes, corporations, nursing homes and a hospital. Only much later did I discover the joy of 2 wheels here in CO. I now have the disease. All ride well, and long, and take lots of photographs! JackZ

First, by now you are all done, right? Second, Friday I have my phy with my GP and I will ASK for the upper and lower. They put me out with juice in my arm, then woke me up only for the directions to 'drink this,' and I think I did then said, 'OK,' and they said, ... 'bye, ...' and then I was in recovery with a good report. As a nursing home, retirement home and hospital administrator I know well what the undetected can rise up as and bite one viciously. So you are doing yourself and all your family a great deed. One bit of advice: Have plenty of TP handy! Prayers for good results. JackZ PS to the rest of you guys and gals: I never cease to wonder what post I'll find here next. LOl. Jz

Like all the rest of us, I add, thanks for serving. My prayers will follow you and be with your family daily. Tell your wife to give me a call if she needs to talk, as I am retired clergy and much more: 970-402-7375. May the Covering of the Good Lords Spirit always be with you, in the advance, the current, and all of your past. Shalom. Jack D. Tharp Fort Collins, CO

My reserve antifreeze tank gets harder to read, darker, as it gets older (could not be my eyes). I imagine we all have the same problem for the first gens, even with the brights of lights my wrench could not reach it. So I took his advice: 3/4'' dowell, 12 & 1/4" long, top mark (high Mark the bottom from the top of the stick, ) nitched at 9 & 1/8th "; for the low mark, 10 & 7/8". I figure that is accurate enough, but might be off a little and better measured on a reserve tank OFF the bike and in natural light. Just thought I'd pass this tidbit along for other lucky 1st gen riders! JackZ

... at mid 50's, full dress on my 86 VR, and only my hands got cold; may need a new pair of gloves! Better type. I did put in 55 glorious miles. And have you posted on my POSTING?: OLDEST VENTURE RIDER? So far I have a 77 and a 16 year old, believe it or not, both on a VR or a second gen? And come to CO and I'll try to keep up with you at 70 with two new knees on my 86 VR! LOL. JackZ
-
Yeaaaaa! And for you? You're one wealthy man to have a woman rider as a companion. Let me know if you find one for me about 60, good pension plan, nice looking, and loves to ride. LOL. Take care of each other! And as well: Come to CO and I'll try to keep up with you with two new knees at 70 and on my 86VR! Meanwhile, ride long, safe and very happy. JackZ

When I bought my first 86 Ursula Gold on Black, I found a temp strip to stick to the bottom of my left mirror. Anyone know where to find those? Or is there something else? Actual road temp is impossible due to wind chill, but wind chill DOES give some warning before one runs into Colorado black ice. Now, don't let that discourage you from coming to CO. Today it was in the mid 50's and I putt in 55 miles in the foot hills of the CO eastern front. Thanks for the info from anyone. JackZ

I posted the question on the ages of those who ride who are on this site. The youngest was 24 and the oldest was 77, but I lost the record of the guy who was 77. THEN I reposted most of this on Second Gens that have trouble reading the license plates of 1st gens when they wish they could pass them .... ahem .... and NEMO cam on and said he was 77, as did ChaHarley, ... who said he was 16 years young! So ... these two are in the lead as the youngest and oldest for a few more days. THEN I will summarize and post the results. If any of you know of him, or you are the courageous one, ... post here. THEN I'll summarize by 10 youngest and 10 oldest, and groups of 10's inbetween and some of info on wifes/riders on the Queen Seat. Thanks for all your comments and help. I just need this guy's info to complete the list. JackZ

Riding full gear I can ride a minimum of 4 and max of 8-10 times in the worst winter months as the temp then is around low 50's. However that is in the foothills, NOT in the mts. Those rides might be 1-2 and just barely in in those worst months, which are only December and January. Otherwise .... I ride and love it! Of course all winter I stay away from the Eastern Planes. Come See! JackZ:smile5:

Two things. First, my Mom at age 80 put on PANTS for the first and last time to ride on myu 86 VR that she and Dad bought me as a gift. We only road around the block, ... and she enjoyed it but was glad to get off, mainly because she did not want anyone to see her in pants. I am also a retired administrator of retirement homes. In my first home I had volunteer hot air balloonists give my residents tethered rides, and a snow mobile group give them snot mobile rides. My 'retired family' loved it! We are NEVER too old for a new challenge. And at 86 my Dad, suffering from Parkinson's (not yet diagnosed) rode a 550 all on his own, .... but declined to buy if for himself. SO, ... is it any wonder I am still riding my 86 VR at 70? LOL! Jack Tharp Fort Collins, CO aka DePreach

.. in Ohio, just before dusk, I topped a SLIGHT hill with running lights on and on HI BEAM with STROBE LIGHTS (4"X2" ... and I saw a silver fender, then the state emblem, then a rear bumper. By then I had been on my back breack full throttle, and I SWARE ... I was doing around 60, and that baby with the brakes at 60% back and 40% front just floated down and I stopped ... just before hitting the bumper. The 60/40% brake system of the VR is a great gift, and it saved my life. He, too, was flipping a uturn to go after someone. By the time I calmed down enough to ride more, ... and chase after him cussing, ... he was gone. I am grateful to Yamaha's designs and the Good Lord that was and am still here. When I see flashing lights, ... I just get out of the way. Being on two wheels is no time to defend one's rights. Jack Tharp Fort Collins, CO aka DePrech (YUP! I did pray a lot in those brief 2 seconds)!

86 VR 2nd Gear Indicator problem
Zfrebird4 replied to Zfrebird4's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I suspect that's the problem. Mine sounds easier to live with that the one presented to the post. I KNOW I am in 2nd gear, but the display doesn't show me the second. Not sure it's worth the bother or perhaps the expense; no problems with the other displays, including the neutral light! Thanks to all for posting. And you know when I mount my 86 VR (my second one, identical, saddly different color, brown on light tan) I am younger than I was when I first mounted my first 86 VR (Ursula Black on Gold). I now have about 170,000 miles in riding since I started in 1986 , .... and I love it! And by the way, I tried SEAFOAM (see the posts on this; thanks to all for those) and my 86 was like new. Wow what zip, as all the guys said it would have. Try some and when you come to CO I'll try to keep up with you at my 70 with two new knees and on my 86 VR; BETTING I can keep up with ALL of you guys and gals now! LOL. Ride safe, happy and long! JackZ -
I am 70, and dislexia makes me a happy 07! I have two artificial knees, and I feel YOUNGER on my 86VR (thanks Squidley and Lonna) .... than at any other time. Have we done a survey? I did read the VR 1st Gen post of the 16 year old riding a VR. Great. So, ... fill me in while I roam Colorado some more! Jack Tharp Fort Collins, CO
-
Yup, that's my question. I am also a dislectic 70 (actually 07), .... and I love riding still. Thanks for responding. I suspect the answer will help my two sons get off this 'give it up, Dad' thing ... that I can't even hear anymore! LOL Jack Tharp Fort Collins, CO

I am now on my SECOND 86 VR, because I know that bike via 89,000 miles, at my YOUNG age of 70 getting another one just made sense! \ BOTH have had the second gear indicator light not working. The first bike was brand new. and the indicator worked for awhile. It's no big problem to me, and thanks to your posts on the second gear I will not be gentle with my second gear. Sounds like on the 86 it was well solved. Any wisdom on the light? Doubt I'll put much money out for the correction though. Just a question. Thanks to all, and all ride safe. Dipstick....
Zfrebird4 replied to 83VR3711's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Anyone every thought of making one? I would need the measurements by someone who has one off as a part to sell, from the bottom of the bottle to the first (low) mark, then to the Second (full) mark. I think the dowell should be just large enough to go through the opening, and yet not fall out when just tucked in 'down there someplace!' I think t he reserve bottle must be darkening with age. Even the brightest flashlight didn't help my wrench; so this is his idea. Thanks. JackZ
