  1. I don't have two Stebels, but I haven't lost a "HORN-OFF" yet! I'm sure there are louder setups out there, but mine will get your attention. I mounted my Stebel under the trunk right behind the HD lights I added. Under the air boxes I mounted a Highway Blaster (low tone on one side, high tone on the other). I've seen some posts where folks were not pleased with the loudness from the Highway Blasters. They are rated at 132 db and I believe it! They are loud enough for me. When I hit the horn button, the Stebel, the two Highway Blasters, and both stock horns go off and heads turn.
  2. Don's house. Centrally located, camping available, and I seem to recall mention of a mysterious pond that draws mechanical devices into it...
  3. There goes the neighborhood! But wait... Maggie is coming along too... that will make things better!
  4. I have RK pipes, but since they don't have the catalytic converter, so I wasn't going to bother to reply... but you changed my mind. Search is your friend. I did a search on 'catalytic' and got 27 hits. In one, Denden describes what he did with the cat: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13177&highlight=catalytic I'll let you look at the other 26 to see if they have anything useful to you in them.
  5. Years ago I asked an LEO friend about this. Don't know if things have changed or not, but he told me if you legally enter the intersection (and you can enter on a yellow/amber light) then you must exit the intersection as quickly as safety permits... does not matter what color the light is once in the intersection as long as you entered it legally. As for me, when the light turns yellow, if I can safely stop, I stop, else I go on. Haven't had a stop light ticket yet.
  6. Fun to watch, but I wouldn't want to be under them!
  7. I don't have an iron butt... not sure its even as hard as copper! If I'm riding 200 or so miles to an event, like a M & G, then off the bike for a while eatin' and talkin', then a short ride and another 200 or so miles home, the sheep skin is fine. If I'm going 400 - 500 miles from A to B, at the first fuel stop, I throw the beads on top of the sheepskin. Next fuel stop, the beads come off, and so on. Keeps my butt confused so it doesn't know when to start hurting. The beads are from a cheap WalMart set I cut down for my bike.
  8. I use the Bosch or the Pure One, just depends on which is stocked in the store I'm in. I like the longer filters. I figure the longer one will keep a good flow longer should I need to extend the time between changes or should they catch a lot of crap from the oil. Don't know how true that is, but it makes me feel better! Bosch - stock 2 1/2" filter = 3300 Bosch - long 3 1/4" filter = 3323 Purolator Pure One - stock 2 1/2" filter = PL14612 Purolator Pure One - long 3 1/4" filter = PL14610 All are in the $6 range
  9. Well JB, now we know why we are so dry. Those folks to the north let their plumbing go. Now the pipes are leaking so bad up there, the water can't make it this far south!.
  10. No problems from here (S Texas). Symptoms sound like waiting for dropped/missing packets. I get that from time to time, but usually it is local and affects all websites. Once in a while I have trouble routing one direction, but things are fine in another direction (e.g.; routes to west coast servers may drop packets while routes to the east are fine). I help out some on another website. A good number of incoming complaints involve IE7 and can't be duplicated in other browsers. Thank goodness I run Linux and FF. I don't have to trouble shoot those problems!
  11. When I ride in the fog or a lite mist, my shins used to get soaked. With the Yamaha deflectors they are only damp, if that. They even help in short periods of moderate rain. If you're gonna run in the rain all day or run in some fairly heavy showers, you're gonna get wet without some other rain protection.
  12. Whatever road He sends you down, a bunch of us will be walking it with you. Prayers still comin'.
  13. It's great to see you posting! You hang in there my friend. Prayers still comin' your way.
  14. I hit 85 (true speed) on an almost daily basis while entering the highway or passing someone. Trying to break that habit, but its hard!. Anyway, lots of throttle left. When I had a dead cylinder (fouled plug), I found acceleration sucked, gas was being sucked, and top speed was about 100 (indicated - not true speed). When its right, it will cross the 100 mark easy, but I don't know where it tops out.
  15. Try setting #44 in the sun and #45 in ice. That should expend 44 a little and contract 45 some. Don't know if it will work on those small parts, but I've used "Fire and Ice" quite a bit when I worked the oil patch.
  16. I love the VMax swap. The bike just has a better feel to it. TrainWreck... you may be 310 lbs, but I would still have to call you my 'little' brother. Put a 5 gal jug of water on each shoulder and we are getting close. Before the swap, I could hit 5th at 40 and even roll on a little throttle with no problem. That just isn't the way I like to ride. Over the 35K miles I have on this bike, I've averaged 31.4 mpg. I did the swap at 31K. I filled up yesterday and got just over 32 mpg on that tank. Weather is hotter, switched to shorter and narrower shield for the summer, opened the lower wind deflectors... so I'm pushing less air right now. Best comparison I can give is at the time of the swap. The 10 tanks before the swap, I got 29.8 mpg. The 10 tanks after the swap, I got 28.3 mpg. I'm not going to say that everyone should do this mod, but it was the right thing for me to do. I've always liked to ride this bike. Now I like it even more.
  17. Most of my riding is 60% highway. I run mostly between 70 and 75 by the GPS (80+ on the speedometer). I'm usually 1up, but that's about the same as most of you 2up. I don't like wasting time getting up to speed from a stop. I don't race, but I don't ease up there either. Every day, I reset the gps max speed reached. I tell myself this will be the day I don't hit 80 mph real speed. Only done it once. I often hit 85 - 90 while gettin' on the highway or scootin' past someone. I've converted to the VMax rear end. Two months ago, I was getting around 30 mpg. Since switching from the tall, wide clearview I use in winter to the stock shield cut down 2" and vented, I've averaged between 31 and 32 mpg.
  18. When I read some posts about folks getting cutoff several times a day, I just couldn't relate. I rarely have that problem. I run the RK's, but they aren't drilled and certainly aren't loud. Today I had to take the car for the first time in a long time. I was cutoff several times on my round trip to work today. Traffic wasn't any different, in fact, maybe a little lighter. The car isn't big, but the Impala isn't small either. I believe it is the headlight modulator on the bike that made the difference. People notice the bike. So... I get seen and I can hear what's happening around me because the bike is pretty quiet. Works for me!
  19. Ain't that the truth! When I took my risers off to put on the RSTD bars, a couple of the bolts seemed to have a little wobble.. like they were slightly bent. I've been thinking about putting the risers under the RSTD bars just to see what that felt like. Not sure the cables will reach. Anyway, I wanted to replace those bolts first. I called Barons to see if I could order some. No problem! They would send me a couple no charge, just pay the shipping. Great! Until I saw the invoice. $13 and some change to ship the two bolts! Learned my lesson!
  20. I'll never ride with loud pipes again. I borrowed a friends truck one day. It wasn't as loud as some bikes, but way louder than a stock cage. I was accelerating down a nice wide street when an ambulance suddenly appeared on a side side street ready to cross the street I was on. The only reason I heard him was because he hit that special loud siren they use at intersections and I was way too close before I heard even that. In a normal cage or on my bike, I can hear them from a at least a block or more away. Fortunately, he was driving more defensively than me. He had to brake pretty hard, but I ended up locking them up trying to stop (old truck - no abs). Hearing is an important tool in knowing what is going on around you. Those advocating loud pipes admit it because they want to make sure the other guy uses it. Not me. I'm not giving up a tool (hearing what is going on around me) that my help me take an action in the hopes that someone else will hear me and take action. I trust myself to do the right thing more than I do them. If I feel I need to let every driver know where I am every minute, I guess I could just lay on the horn button and let the air horns inform everyone. Or maybe I could just hit the button when I need it... you know.... make a loud noise when needed... not all the time.
  21. Pushin' air really does take it's toll on mileage. A few weeks ago I took off my tall and wide Clearview and put on a cut down (2'' shorter) stock windshield. With the hot weather, I've also opened the lower wind deflectors. Looks like I've gained about 2 mpg by pushing aside less air.
  22. Compared to last year... yep... it's warmer. Never made it to 100 last year, which is unusual. At least the ride to work in the morning is ok. A cooling vest really helps the ride home. I won't even complain about the winds. Those 20 mph winds help cool you down when caught in traffic or sitting at lights! Today I even caught a couple of brief, light showers on the way home. Now that felt good!
  23. I use the tag to mark threads I want to find later. For instance, there is a thread on keys for the 2nd gen. I don't need a key right now and didn't want to print the page (which I would probably lose anyway). Instead, I clicked the edit tags (right side of tags) and typed 'key blank' into the box that was provided. Now that thread has a 'key blank' tag. Later, I can do a tag search for key blank and that thread will be found. Makes searching easier.
  24. Still with you both, JT. Prayers continue.
  25. I'll throw something out that maybe someone else with more knowledge than me can comment on. Can a bad carb-sync cause that big a drop in gas mileage? My understanding is that the manual has bad info on syncing the carbs. If the mechanic isn't aware of this, he may have taken a decent sync and made it bad.
